Can’t stop listening to this song, it’s about Christian Brothers brandy and his anger about his family and friends trying to have an intervention, anyone else like this song?
Hello, and welcome to another Elliott Smith bootleg review. Here's another full band gig from his 1997 tour. It's going to be a short one this week as... well, there isn't really loads to talk about here.
Sound Quality: Poor. This one is hard to listen to for the majority of the set. It's distorted, it's too loud, and you can hardly hear the guitar or vocals until Elliott does a short acoustic set at the end.
Performance: It's solid, if nothing very remarkable. Elliott has sounded better and played better, although there are a few moments where he really gets to cut loose on the guitar.
Setlist: Interestingly, this is the first time that Elliott has played nothing pre-Either/Or. Not a single track from Roman Candle or the self-titled album. Instead, it's a mix of Either/Or tracks, B-sides and live favourites, and songs from the (still 2 years away) XO album.
Any rare gems? The band bust out a fantastic cover of The Beatles' Something. There aren't many recordings of this cover, and it's a great chance to hear Elliott's full-on guitar soloing skills. He also plays Doing OK, Pretty Good, an unreleased track he only played a few times throughout his career. However, the really exciting recording is a radio session that for some reason has been tacked onto the beginning of this bootleg, in which Elliott plays a "still unnamed" new song... which turns out to be the very first performance of Happiness! He even ends it after the first round of "What I used to be will pass away...", saying "then it just keeps looping until it fades out".
Worth a listen? The sound quality is too poor to recommend the concert performance, but try and find that first rendition of Happiness.
I love the fact that the voice is placed in the foreground, exposed, almost isolated ❤
