I love eOs, but one frustration I've had is with installing nvidia drivers. I've noticed that other distros (popos for example) give the option of two isos, one regular one, and one for nvidia. Not sure what all they do, probably make sure nouveau isn't installed at all would probably be one thing.
No idea how difficult that would be, but it would take care of a lot of the installation issues that I see on here.
i need to install an lts kernel because the newer ones dont support my gpu
and well i cant boot without nomodeset. so i need to type nomodeset in, boot, install a custom kernel, boot using that kernel
i cant add nomodeset because i cant open up the grub menu. already tried pressing esc and arrows multiple times, holding the shift key down. it was just booting into the system
and if someone knows how to fix that kernel problem, my gpu is rx 560
Is Not accepting any Weather Provider saying invalid location code to all of them even with a working API-Key. Help very much appreciated!
Hello, happy Eos user for years, but now using a Kali distro with xfce, love the customization :)
Am missing the Code editor feature of automatically updating the file without having to save it. Is there an easy way to install Code on a debian (github seems to imply installing a lot of dependencies, Meson etc), or any similar feature in another text editor I am yet to learn about ?
Someone, please send me the default wallpapers for Elementary OS. I really like them, but I don't know where to find them outside of the actual system.
I would like to use the EoS native browser but I'm having trouble figuring out how to load a CSV password file into the native browser. There is a drop down on the right side and with a sub-menu for import and export. When I pull up the import passwords, everything is grayed out except the cancel button. What am I missing?
Hi so is there a Elementary os lookalike, thats looks like modernized elementary os because i don’t like the old design.
I recently installed elementary OS 8, and i installed Firefox on it. In the settings, i can't set Firefox to be the default browser, the preinstalled browser is the only option. Does anyone have a solution?
I’d love to see an easier way to integrate Google Calendar with Google Drive. For example, being able to directly access or manage calendar events from Drive without switching tabs would be super convenient.
Does anyone know of tools or methods to make this process seamless? Or maybe Google could consider adding built-in functionality for this?
Let me know your thoughts!

⭐ Elementary OS 8! Acabou de chegar! Surpreenda se com este S O!
I've tried using LibreOffice but the theme there isn't looking so good in eos, the dark mode isn't working either (flatpak version from store). What is an another simple office suite to use in eos?
Update: I tried different office suites and I choose to stay with LibreOffice. It looks pretty good if we install the debian package of it and not the flatpak one.
Hey all. Loving eOS 8 so far. Great work, team! Has anyone run pCloud successfully? They distribute as an AppImage and I can sign in and see my network disk mounted. But whenever I try to open pCloud UI again, it will open but stop the network disk. And from then, all is Segmentation Fault, core dump. It's working seamlessly on Ubuntu 24.04.
I’ve been thinking about how to simplify the process of reinstalling an operating system. If updating the release inside current installation isn’t possible and you have to reinstall the system every time, wouldn’t it be easier to keep /home
in a separate partition? This way, you could reinstall the system without formatting the user data partition.
I also noticed that Flatpak probably saves applications in the home directory, so even the applications wouldn’t be lost. This seems to require a lot less effort compared to the typical public opinion that it's a significant and unbearable downside of the distribution.
Additionally, I’m curious if anyone has experience using the same device for 10 years, considering how quickly technology evolves and hardware requirements increase. How do you handle updates and reinstalls? And even if the same PC can run well for 10 years straight, is there a distribution with major releases that provides security updates for such a long time (excluding Ubuntu Pro and rolling releases)?
I’d love to hear your thoughts and insights!
The media playback was aborted due to a corruption problem or because the media used features your browser did not support.
Do I need specific codec or something ?
I was wondering if there's a way to prevent io.elementary.dock from loading in the Classic Session as I'm sticking with Plank and I only want it active.
It seems tightly tied to Gala with no discernible options for turning it on/off.
I'm thinking of neutralizing it by symlinking it to /dev/null but I would like to know if there's a cleaner way.
What's the ideal way to get multimedia codecs? I tried ubuntu-restricted-extras but that didn't help
Hi!
I am facing the following problem: I installed ElementaryOs 8 many times now but it did not work so far. Most of my tries were met by black screen after trying to boot, which did not progress no matter how long I waited for. Now for the Nth attempt currently after install I am greeted by tty1 login screen but I was not able to create a user yet, so I cannot event attempt to fix something at this point. I was able to see some of the logs with pressing ESC and it seems that systemd.logind.service is unable to start.
Is there a default user I could try to fix things with or any other way to get past this?

EDIT:
I managed to get it to boot with a bit of "trickery". "splash" is needed to be removed from the boot options, but I was not able to get to the boot menu as it froze before that. So I used the live disk, I installed ubuntu boot repair on it and I was able to use that to remove the splash option. Hope this helps!
Is there a way to minimize an opened window via dock?
I tried installing Steam from the App Centre, and it tells me that the version there isn’t fully compatible with Proton, plus I need to manually install something via terminal to get controller compabitibility.
So I download the .deb file from the Steam website and it doesn’t open anything. I google around and find Eddy is meant to work, so I install that from the AppCenter, and Steam seems then to work, but controllers still don’t.
I want to install Dropbox, but the Deb installs the app but then nothing happens. There’s no status icon, no sidebar access in File Browser, but there’s a folder in Home except that it’s literally just downloading everything on my Dropbox, I have no control over it, cannot access Dropbox settings, and no way to see status icons on files for offline/online access.
This should not be this difficult. I’m not new to Linux. I’ve been running Fedora for over a year now and I’ve been using Linux regularly for more than 10 years going back to the original Crunchbang and like 12.02 of Ubuntu.
There doesn’t appear to even by any activity/system monitor to check background processes?
I love the visual design of Elementary, especially the new cursors and app icons. But man it’s such a pain in the ass to use
Hi, I daily drive Kubuntu GDM3 but I want to try out Elementary OS but without having to risk deleting the other 2 if I don't like using it, How do I install Elementary OS on top of Ubuntu the way I could do with Kubuntu? If so, how good is its touch screen support as I use a 2-in-1 laptop. Thanks in Advance
Testing - seems like I was banned? For what? If this post shows up, okay, but why can't I post responses?
Hi,
I'm new to Elementary and Linux in general, and I'm trying to visualize HTML files in the browser, but it can't seem to find them.
I tried with Epiphany and Brave, and both browsers can only find the "Desktop" and "Downloads" folders but no others.
If anyone knows how to solve this problem, I'd appreciate it.
PS: I apologize if anything is unclear; English is not my first language.
First off, huge thanks to the team for all the effort you’ve put into the new update. I know elementary OS doesn’t get as much attention as it deserves, and I really hope more people start recognizing how great it is. I’ve been a fan since 2019, and even though I mostly use macOS on my Mac, elementary OS has always been my top choice for Linux. Anytime someone asks me about switching to Linux, it’s the first distro I recommend. It’s just so clean, polished, and honestly, the most beautiful one out there.
That said, I’m a bit puzzled by some of the design changes in the new update, especially the dock. It feels like a half baked attempt at mimicking macOS. The old design was way more elegant and modern. Now, it feels kind of flat and boring. There’s no background blur, the rounded edges are barely there, and it just doesn’t match the rest of the system’s vibe. The tiny indicator dots below open apps also look cramped. On macOS, the spacing makes it feel intentional, but here, it just feels off. If you’re going for a macOS inspired dock, it could’ve been implemented much better.
The dock isn’t my only gripe though. The new quick settings menu with its flat icons doesn’t feel like it belongs, and the new two pane settings menu also looks a bit off. The blur effect in the multitasking view feels random since no other part of the system uses blur. For me elementary OS always struck a perfect balance between early 2010s skeuomorphic design and modern flat aesthetics. But now, it feels like some of that charm is being lost. The overly simplistic icons, weird font sizes in the settings menu, button placements, all feel a bit unpolished.
I'm not a fan of the new settings icon either, old one was so much better. The current one looks like a stripped down version of pre Big Sur macOS preferences icon, and it doesn’t really fit with the rest of the icons. Also, the new multitasking view icon, which was changed in OS 7, feels unnecessarily complicated. That said, The Tasks app icon, when first introduced, had a rectangular design that felt out of place, but you fixed it later. So props for that lol.
Overall, it feels like the attention to detail that made elementary OS stand out has slipped a bit. I still love the system, and if I ever stop using my Mac, it’ll be my go to Linux distro without question. But these design choices have left me a bit disappointed, and I hope we can see a return to the level of polish that made elementary OS so special.
Once again thank you for all your hard work on this update. I really appreciate everything you’ve done to make elementary OS what it is.
Title, basically.
I've seen that the system updates on 8 are now done through the settings app. Does this mean major release upgrades will be done through there?
I know that if there's ever an 8.1 we'll be able to upgrade without reinstalling, but what about when eOS 9 comes out?
What about when the next Ubuntu LTS comes out?
Having to reinstall my entire system every big update is what has kept me from using eOS since 2016, even if these big updates take a long time - the thought of it just annoys me - and sorry if I'm the one being annoying.
So,
EoS v8 intrduced the Wayland "system" for lack of a better term.
This resulted in a number of rather significant changes, a lot of which I consider to be regressions. The dev's at EoS won't accept that, but the fact of the matter is things that I'm used to have either changed, or gone away completely under Wayland.
I'm merely a user and know little about Wayland and what it brings to the table.
Switching back to X11, many of the changes are reversed and most things are as I am used to. The new dock has to be replaced with Plank, but Plank is familiar so that's the positive.
I'll throw it out here:
What are the plusses and minuses of Wayland vs X11?
I guess the question is, would I be better off to switch back to X11 and wait to see if the Wayland interface fleshes out appropriately? Perhaps v8.1?
Thank you.
Hello! I have a bootable usb with windows 11 on it and when I try to actually boot from it, it won’t show up as an option in grub. It is turned on as a bootable device in bios and I can’t understand what’s the problem
