Looking for Djiboutian recipes to help my partner connect with his roots!

Hey everyone!

I'm a 29-year-old woman living in the Netherlands, and I want to surprise my Djiboutian partner with some authentic dishes. He grew up abroad and has never had traditional Djiboutian food, so I thought it would be a special way to help him connect with his roots.

Since I don’t have much experience with Djiboutian cuisine, I’d love to hear your suggestions for must-try recipes. What are the classic dishes I should start with? Are there any unique ingredients I need to look out for (especially since I’m in the Netherlands)?

Thanks so much! 😊

What Is Skoudehkaris? A few interview type questions about the national dish for my research project.

What is your experience with Skoudehkaris?

Is it eaten at a special time of year?

Who normally prepares it?

Is it for special occasion or a family meal?

Where do they get the ingredients?

Please share any history related to the ingredients or the culture surrounding the dish. I am conducting research for a project at my university and hope to get some insight from those in the know! Thank you

Gaming in Djibouti

Hey guys! I look at gaming cultures around the world and I am a racing game fan. I have asked all of these questions on different subreddits, simply because I am curious about how each and every single country on this planet experiences video games. I am also curious about gaming in Djibouti. My questions are:

What is more popular? PC or console?

What was more popular in the late 90s and early 2000s? PC or Console?

What racing game was popular in the late 90s and early 2000s!

What do racing game fans in Djibouti play today?-(I get it might not be the most popular genre, but for people who like it, what do they play?)

In general, what games are played there?

Also, what years did gaming become popular there?

2000-2003?

2004-05?

Before 2000?

Thanks for your responses!!!!

What Do You All Think?

Hey, what do you all think? Do you think it's possible? Honestly, I think it's a pipe dream and it's impossible because I have not seen any other country, other than Uganda, showing any interest in this, particularly its leader Museveni. This is coming from a guy who has ruled his own country for 38 years, so why would other countries cede their sovereignty to join a political federation? Any insight about its current status would be appreciated, whether it's even possible at all or not.

Hiring long term faceless documentary editor (Afro-Asiatic channel)

I have had editors reach out from non-editing subreddits before, and I assume someone with a background related to these subjects might have some additional insight when it comes to adding the right aesthetic to the videos, so I thought I would reach out here. Looking for someone who can edit like this, my Indo-European channel is also linked on my profile:

https://youtu.be/Y7ExXLcy26s?si=YXQL6W3JY9FYJPdz

https://youtu.be/4hZN4YtBPpg?si=Nir4bAxyauZTJSAo

Would prefer if you just send 1-2 examples of editing that would match what I am looking for. I will only move over to another messaging app when I decide to move forward with you. Editing does not need to be as complex as the linked examples, but should be visually appealing. My current budget is [$10/min of completed video], although I am open to increasing this if my channel grows and I like your work. Must be available to edit at least every 2 weeks, the general delivery time should be 5 days/10 min, but it can be extended for more complex animations. Must be able to do map animations. I will try to find some images and music, but you must be willing to research and find the rest. The topic is Afro-Asiatic studies, I would like a brief statement about how interesting that topic might be for you and why. I would like to see a one-minute sample with materials I provide, so you must be willing to do that.

Is its safe for women? Tips for female travelers.

I will be going to a work trip in Djibouti next month. Although Im going with my guy colleague and just for few days, would like to have some idea on what to expect. Will there be catcalling? Is it unsafe? What to wear? I’m also Asian so that might attract some attention.

I am from south east asi so its not like Im sensitive to these kinds of stuff but just want to be prepared as well and ensure I respect the country.

Thanks

Hiring narrator for Afro-Asiatic channel

I am currently trying to start a YouTube channel on Afro-Asiatic studies. I think it would be nice to find a native speaker of one of these languages, so I was wondering if anyone was interested in taking that role. It is an English channel that features a lot of vocabulary from Afro-Asiatic languages. I have a low budget, so I am willing to start at $50 for 2500 words, but I am open to increasing that if I like your work and my channel continues to grow. Let me know if you are interested.

Best way to learn Somali?

Although I'm Somali, I have very little knowledge of the language itself. I can't post this on r/somalia because my account is too new either. So I was wondering if anyone on this sub could give me tips on the best ways to become a fluent Somali speaker?

Also, how common is French among Djiboutians? Would I need to learn French as well to communicate with non-Somali Djiboutians? Or do the Afar speak Somali too?

Are you coping with the high temperatures in Djibouti?

Hi people of Djibouti, my name is Tijmen, a reporter for the Dutch newspaper Trouw. This summer I'm covering heat / high temperatures all over the world, and I'm really curious about stories from you. Is the summer a bit bearable there? How do the temperatures affect daily life? Please share your experiences – and send me a PM if you're open to a short video interview.

Adopted.. Looking for someone... ?

Hello fellow Djiboutians.

I'm wondering on multiple levels how one could go about finding someone in Djibouti via official methods (registers) if they were in the country and say as someone outside of the country/online. I don't speak French so there is of course a language barrier for me there. Are there many people who speak English over there?

I was born in Djibouti in 1988, orphaned, stayed with some Catholic Nuns and then adopted (I have an older non blood brother who was adopted too) to British Parents who lived in France and lived in the UK all my life, bit of a wild ride and as happy as my life may be I always have a knowing and wondering what happened to my Mother and If I have more family out there. My Mother apparently came from Ethiopia for whatever reason. I originally got DNA test from Ancestry to figure out my genetics and It gave me like roughly 70% Ethiopian-Eritrean and 30% Djboutian.. I for some reason recently expected to be fully Somalian but have always considered my background 'Djiboutian' until really learning more about the tribes.

I digress, One thing I've noticed when searching for my mothers surname 'Abdillahi' is all the results come from Djibouti, not from Somalia or Ethiopia, specifically Djibouti, is this a tribal thing? Would this be a Somali name (isaac clan?) or an Afar name? Are Afar Muslims? I can't find much info on the Afar other than mostly tribal pictures lol

How do the naming conventions work, for example my mothers name is 'Mouna Osman Abdillahi' and I have what I'm guessing is the surname 'Abdilahi', Mouna is her first name of course so would Osman be a maiden name or just a middle name?

I have been searching Facebook for many years with not much luck and the Djiboutians seem quite closed off and there's the language barrier too. If I went to Djibouti are there public registers where one can see births/deaths or Family trees?

Also given I was orphaned around this time (I understand many were) and her coming from Ethiopia, why may this have been? The Famine? I had a recent theory after learning more of the Somali History and learning about Siad Barre and the genocide in Northern Somalia and I came to thinking that may have been the reason why but I'm not sure... This is conjecture of course

That's a lot but If anyone has any information regarding and is willing to share please do and if anyone else has been adopted and wants to chat hit me up.

Thanks.
