AI generated princesses…

A bit of a long post here, so please bear with me.

First and foremost: AI image generation is not and will never be art, and so I will not be referring to it as AI art.

Over the past while there’s been an influx of AI generated images on this sub. As an artist myself, it’s incredibly disheartening to see, for multiple reasons.

I’m so sick of seeing ideas for new Disney princesses and new movies, only for the accompanying image to be AI generated with patterns that don’t make sense, creepy and unsettling hands, and wonky anatomy that is all over the place. We as a community should do better, because we deserve better.

Look, I get it. These generators are convenient, they create work that is believable at first glance, and the results tend to look nice. But honestly? That’s not enough of an excuse. This may sound harsh, but if you use AI image generation instead of learning to draw on your own or paying an actual artist to draw your idea, you’re lazy. That’s all there is to it. You’re lazy. While being lazy is not always bad, I feel like the case of AI image generation is one where laziness WILL always be bad.

If you have a cool concept, why not put in the time and effort to learn to draw so you can make your idea come to life, instead of resorting to AI? And if that takes too much time, why not support an actual artist by paying them to sketch something up? And if you don’t want to do any of that but still want to have images to accompany your idea, then don’t use art. Use other images of things you would have drawn inspiration from. Dresses you found online, historical references, etc. Just please, DO NOT use AI.

“But I suck at drawing and it won’t look good if I try to draw it!” So what? What’s wrong with that? All artists start somewhere. We don’t just magically know how to draw everything, we’ve put in time to learn. I would much rather see hundreds of human made, beginner artworks with honest mistakes and effort put into them than 1 soulless, AI generated image that ventures into uncanny valley and has a myriad of mistakes due to AI not knowing what it’s doing half the time. Because at least I know that with human artwork, people put time into them. They put some amount of effort and care into their creations, and it has heart behind it. Not a stupid prompt typed into a box for a program to pop out what it thinks you want.

These image generators are trained using other artists work, without their consent, therefore any AI generated images are nothing but glamorized art theft. It’s unfair to the artists who put time and energy creating their work, only to have it scraped by AI and used to create low-effort posts. It’s incredibly harmful to us.

In an ideal world, people would stop posting AI generated images on this sub entirely. But because I know that’s not going to happen, all I ask is that if you are going to post something with AI generated imagery, please show artists the baseline respect by NOT putting it under the ‘artwork’ flair. Because it’s a slap in the face to call your generated word prompt art when we have put YEARS into our craft, and your work is not and should not be considered art. And keep in mind that is the bare minimum. If you really want to show respect to artists, then here’s what you need to do:

Stop using AI image generators for your ideas.

How I picture The Princesses receiving Raya into the group

Snow: You don't sing?

Cinderella: You have no prince?

Rapunzel: You aren't adorkable or cutesy?

Aurora: You aren't girly?

Raya: Yeah? Do you have a problem with that? I prefer to be my own person and do things my way.

Tiana: And you know what, that is good enough to be princess as doing things your way and following your path and doing fresh new things.

Moana: And regardless of how you may see us, we are very supportive of one another as we are sisters and you willing to break the mold is even more admirable.

Merida: And teach me yer fightin skills, lass. I bet we'll make great friends.

Raya: (smiles) I guess there's something to this princess thing after all thanks for being supportive, girls. Hopefully I'll fulfill my duties on being a good princess.

The girls: Welcome to the Princess family, Ray's (they give her a group hug)

Raya: This is something I have to get used to.

What kinda illnesses or conditions you picture the princesses having

Since no human being is perfect, I can imagine that princesses are no exception so, what kind of conditions or illnesses you imagine the princesses might have?

For Aurora, it's too easy, I imagine her narcoleptic and even if she wants to just have a fun day and be out in the fields, she falls asleep to much as she is the sleeping beauty.

Because of how she has some limited social skills and tends to be naive and yet very curious about everything in the outside world, along with being talented in art, and having hyperfocus that helps in her art, I imagine Rapunzel being autistic.

Mulan, to me, fits the bill with ADHD as she doesn't seem to be pretty attentive when she was with her matchmaker, has to write notes on her arm so she can focus on things and can be impulsive and hyperactive, which was good for her to handle the battles the Chinese army had to go through.

Wish Is..... Frustrating: A (Very Long) Review

I finally watched this movie on D+ after avoiding it and waiting for the discourse to die down a bit. Having seen it, I think I can speak for many when I say I reeeeeally wanted this movie to be great. But for everything that's good, there's more that underwhelms.

First, the Animation: It definitely looks better and more detailed than it did in the trailers, but there's still something not quite there about it. It looks very storybook-esque, which is I'm sure is what they were going for, but the way they've done it results in everything looking washed out and flat unless there's something magical happening. And some of the magic stuff is really cool, especially in the climax, but a lot of the movie is pretty boring to look at. It feels like a prologue storybook intro that eventually fades into the regular Disney animation style at the end of it, except it stays in that style the whole time.

Asha the Protagonist: I think I like her more than most people. Yes, she's hyper-adorkable in the beginning of the film to a slightly annoying degree, but she mellows out after the first act and is overall enjoyable. I really like her design, it's unique among Disney Heroines but still recognizably Disney. And of course Ariana Debose kills it with the vocal performance. The main problem with her is that she feels underdeveloped. Her reasons for wanting to be the apprentice at all are not fleshed out whatsoever. There's the dead dad angle but we never see any scenes of her with him, so we don't have any sense of their relationship, so that motivation falls flat. There's the Grandpa's wish angle but even that is very vague and not explored. Outside of that she has no real interest in magic, and she's not a fangirl for the King, so who is she? She's enjoyable to be around and admirable for her gumption, but there's no sense of where that comes from. Ariana deserved better.

Magnifico, a return to classic Disney Villainy?: Wellll, sorta kinda. I like his design (although I wish the outfit wasn't all white), and Chris Pine is obviously having the time of his life hamming it up. People were saying after the trailers came out that "ooh, he has a point, he's actually the good guy!" Which is frankly a sign of widespread media illiteracy and I don't agree with. He's clearly egotistical and slightly paranoid. The problem is that the character's origins, which are pointedly set up in the intro, don't pay off. There's a hint of a sympathetic/tragic backstory, but it doesn't feed into anything or really have anything to do with the plot. And we don't get a real look at his and the Queen's relationship, which considering what she does later, seems like something that should have been explored. As for his villain song, we'll get to the mess of a score later. Before that though:

An Overstuffed Supporting Cast: Seriously, half of these characters should be gone because they add nothing and take time away from the characters that needed the extra screen time. I get that her friend group is a 7 dwarves reference, but the only 3 that add anything are Dahlia the leader/confidante, Gabo the cynic, and Simon the betrayer. Her family also takes too much space. I get why Grandpa's there but Mom should have been cut completely. It would make Asha's situation more desperate and give her more reason to bond with her dead dad. Also, absent moms are Disney's whole thing! They wanted this to be a tribute so bad, that's the easiest thing they could have done!! Valentino is both useless and unfunny so he should have been cut and Star could have pulled double duty. But the one that frustrates me the most is the Queen. They could have done something really interesting with her and the King's dynamic, but her hesitance with the King going crazy doesn't come from anything. Or maybe they could have made her a Lady Macbeth-esque villain. SOMETHING.

The Songs: Musicals are Disney's bread and butter, so it's really disappointing that the songs here are so subpar. Often the lyrics are clunky and feel awkwardly shoved into the music, as if they were written separately with no communication and neither were allowed to change when they came together. "Welcome to Rosas" is painfully generic and doesn't really do anything to develop any of the characters or plot, which is the whole function of an opening number. "At All Costs" is actually quite lovely, probably the best song in the score. But it feels like a romantic ballad and makes no sense in context. "This Wish" has the clunkiest lyrics of them all, especially in the chorus. The melody in places is nice, but it's ruined by how inept and generic the lyrics are. "This Is The Thanks I Get" is catchy and could have worked, but it's too upbeat for what immediately precedes it, and again, the lyrics are terrible. For Disney's first true villain song in like a decade, it's such a letdown. "I'm a Star" is truly baffling in every regard. It sets up something admittedly slightly clever that comes later, but the song itself is awful and makes no sense in the context of the scene it takes place in. "Knowing What I Know Now" is ok and could have worked if any of the characters in it had been sufficiently developed. The closer, "A Wish Worth Making", is once again so generic that I have nothing to say. Disney has a history of getting top Broadway composers to score their films to great success like Menken and Ashman, the Lopezes, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, which is important because Broadway composers know musical storytelling better than anyone. And Julia Michaels does not bring that to the table.

The elements should have been in place to make this a masterpiece, but instead we have a generic and messy story with nothing to latch onto. I don't want to give any credence to the "Disney's going woke and now they're broke" crowd because that is a braindead take and not at all the problem with this movie or Disney in general. I really don't know what happened here. It's just so hollow. I find it funny that the credits feature starry renderings of characters from all their previous films, which in a better movie would serve as a loving tribute. In here, it's just a reminder of the plethora of much better movies you could have been watching instead of this one.

The more I think about this movie the more it annoys me. Do better, Disney.

And kudos if anyone actually read this whole thing lol if you did, here's a gold star for you! ⭐

Would it be too controversial to another “lucky” poll

But with more physical characteristics such as skin tone, body type, hair style, (I’m interested in time period/world building) and redos of previous polls like hair and eyes and lips. I’m interested because I’d want to draw the final result.

Which Disney princess was the luckiest in each category, finale!

Tiana won! Even ignoring the top comment which could be interpreted as for Tiana or for the concept of what counts as lucky.

I wanted to include Lottie in the family photo because, she’s amazing, buttttt there was no room. So Lottie is here in spirit ✌️

Thanks to everyone for letting me finish this haha, I was glad to get closure on it.

I just watched WISH - my thoughts

It was an easy watch, but not something I think I'll watch again. Asha was a bit too adorkable for me. I liked the music of the songs but not really the lyrics ("Throw caution to every warning sign"? "I let you live here for free and I don't even charge you rent"?) "At All Costs" was probably my favorite song but it was definitely a romance song and felt out of place with it being sung to the wishes. I also feel like Magnifico's turn to evil was kinda rushed, maybe if he felt like he was more evil at first it would have worked out better. There was something I didn't like about the art style but I can't put my finger on it. Overall I didn't hate it like I thought I would after watching all the negative Youtube videos about it but it's definitely not in my top list of Disney animated movies.

Tiebreaker round: Vote out your least favorite song of these two! 🎶

“Just Around the Riverbend” and “Once Upon a December” were tied to get eliminated for my Princess “I Want” song poll!

Help choose which will be eliminated by voting out your LEAST favorite with the link: https://strawpoll.com/eJnvvbPKGnv

Thank you! 🫶🏻

(Also bc I always get comments about this: Anastasia is celebrated on this sub as an honorary Disney Princess since Disney bought Fox and her movie is on Disney+ now, so yes, she counts ♥️)

Also the following is not important to read unless you’re interested in my song choice for Anastasia. Just thought I’d give my thoughts on it here, for those who have been asking:

A couple people have said that “Journey to the Past” should have been her “I Want” song. I did consider it when I created this poll, but chose this one instead for two reasons:

  1. JttP is certainly the more traditional “I Want”, set at the beginning of her journey and story. But I feel that OUaD is also an “I want” because of the lyrics about “yearning to remember” - the song is very much about longing to remember things on the edge of her heart and mind that are crucial to her identity and journey. It’s specific to the palace and setting and her current circumstances. To me, it is much more specific to what Anya wants to know and be than JttP, which is mostly about beginning her journey to finding a vague sense of family or “home”.

They are both similar in theme, but one is more of a generalized “beginning a journey” song and the other is more of her specific desires. Think Elsa’s “Into the Unknown” vs “Show Yourself”. I would argue Show Yourself is much more specific to what Elsa’s heart wants and yearns for, even though Into the Unknown is set in the beginning and establishes her journey.

  1. OUaD is overall more popular and I thought it would have more of a chance of lasting longer than the other one. I love Anastasia and wanted her to be represented here for a bit, not voted out round 1.

Anyways that’s all my thoughts on it! It’s fine if you don’t agree, just thought I’d explain for those wondering ♥️
