I can only think of Lottie , Nakoma the two friends that Ariel has in the show and the Mattel/tyco doll line I think raya has a friend.. Mulan with the 3 princesses but that’s it

There is that discourse that I wanted to talk about today: the idea that Asha is the actual vilain of the story, and that Magnifico did nothing wrong. It seems to be a very popular discourse that gets brought up and upvoted a lot, everytime the movie is talked about, here in this sub and others.

And here is my question for those sharing that discourse: did we watch the same movie?

I get the idea of interpretation. But you know, interpretation has to make sense at some point. If I say that from my point of view Rapunzel was an ungrateful dauhter and Gothel was a victim, I am factually wrong.

It's like people have such a dislike for the movie and/or the character, that they're being purposefully obtuse and ignoring the numerous elements that totally contradict this statement.

I even saw people admitting they didn’t even watch the movie, while still having a strong opinion about Magnifico being right somehow. Which is ridiculous and shows how much bad faith there is to that discourse.

1. She wants every wish to be granted, which is unreasonnable and dangerous

This is the main point made against her. Even though she factually does not. She wants the wishes to be given back so people can realise them by themselves. She even agrees that they still should be stopped if what they're trying to do is dangerous.

2. The people give their wish willingly

The system is not fair bevause they are tricked into being a part of it without knowing how this system exactly works.

They don’t know that they lose a part of themselves when they give their wish away. They think it has no negative effect, it's said in the Welcome to Rosas song. In the most extreme cases like Sleepy, it's like they almost become braindead. We also see two characters giving up their wish later in the film and they also lose their brightness.

3. They know that statistically, most wishes can't be granted

But they don't know the criteria. From an external point of view, it looks random. Everytime they think their wish has an actual chance to be picked up. They don’t know most wishes are put aside from the get go and will never have a true chance of being granted, because seen as too dangerous.

4. Magnifico was selfless, only thinking about what was good for his people

I understand that the people in universe are manipulated by all this cult of personality and some of them may be desperate refugees, like Magnifico himself was.

But actual people irl, not raising an eyebrow at this? Imposing something that important as a requirement for citizenship, especially when some of them could be refugees or desperate and not realistically have a choice in the matter, is fucked up and manipulative no matter how you twist it.

Notice how easy it was for him to manipulate its people against Asha because he could grant a wish for anyone who would serve him. That’s why he doesn’t return the wishes. It gives him control and laverage over its people, they become more docile because they constantly hope to be granted their wish if they get on his good side.

Magnifico’s system may seem benevolent on a superficial level but it was actually calculated to put him at the top and everyone else dependant on him and under his influence. It was actually self-serving.

He said so himself: he considers that he should be the one who decides what people deserve or not. When he loses it and say that, we're supposed to understand to he's showing his true colors and mindset here. Dude loves to be loved and be at the top, unchallenged.

5. She was selfish, she only thinks about herself and her grandpa

Sure, she asks for her grandpa's wish right away the second she gets close to the apprentice position. But to say that she only thinks about herself and her grandpa?

During her song she looks at all the citizens around her, and sees the potential of each wish that she knows now, will never have a chance to exist. She clearly thinks about her people.

I even saw someone use her lyrics against her when she says "to have something more than this" as if it was about her. When actually it's "to have something more FOR US than this". It's things like that make me think we're getting into bad faith territory, and people being obtuse and misleading on purpose.

7. She is hypocritical because at the end of the movie she becomes a wish granter, just like Magnifico

She does not trick people into giving up their wish to her and arbitrarily decides which one should be held hostage by her with no chance of becoming real.

And also, very important: it is a collaborative effort. It's explicitely clear: people under Magnifico's rule were acting like lazy, spoiled children and just wanted their wish to be granted by magic. With no effort on their part.

Now people are encouraged to realize it by themselves and actually working to get there. Like the woman who wants to fly, teaming up with Peter who wants to make a flying machine.

It seems obvious to me she's not gonna ruin that as a Fairy Godmather. Which is why she's been chosen is the first place. This new philosophy was made possible by her and the Queen. She proved herself to be actually selfless, and fair. She probably just gonna add a little touch of magic here and there to help. But I get that using no magic at all would have been more impactful for some people.

TLDR

No, the problem was not Magnifico not granting every wish, and if you think so, you have terrible media literacy.

The problem was tricking people into giving up a core part of themselves without their knowledge. The problem was keeping most wishes hostage, not returning them.

Asha's complaints against Magnifico were absolutely fair.

And the winner of Day 3 is: ✨Ariel✨

Now, supposing this IS the new want song it replaces 'Im Wishing.' If you havent seen that then you probably shouldnt be here lol. Anyways my point basically fits in with all the points on why a 'girlboss' Snow White is kinda a bad idea. Snow White was strong because she remained kind, its not bad to want true love, etc. etc.

'Im Wishing' fits SO much better for Snow White AS SHE IS because it has a longing, yet slightly melancholy tone to it. Lets compare some lyrics shall we?

Rachel: "Waiting on a wish! Holding out for someday! Hoping some how- some way! There comes a miracle to find me!"

Snow White: Im hoping. And Im dreaming of....the nice things. Hell say.

Now Rachels just singing about a 'miracle' to come and save her. Huh??? Is she gonna run off? Is magic gonna help her??? Is Wish gonna happen again???

While our GIRLIE is explaining (extremely plainly) that she wants someone to call her 'pretty'. Think about it...her stepmom probably doesent say it so the poor thing never hears it! AGHH SO SAD!

I was watching the Lion King, and I was watching the famous scene when Mufasa gave Simba a message from heaven about remembering who he is and I can imagine that when Tink was trapped in the rubble of Peter's house after Hook's bomb destroyed it, I imagined Queen Clarion saying almost the same things as Mufasa to her in regards to her actions from almost killing Wendy and essentially almost killing Peter after trusting Captain Hook.

Queen Clarion: Tinker Bell. You have forgotten us.

Tink: No. Why would I be?

Queen Clarion: Because of your actions with that human Wendy girl and Peter, you have forgotten who you are, and so, you have forgotten us. Look inside you, Tinker Bell. You are more than what you have become. You must take your place as a Tinker Fairy and fix what needs to be broken.

Issues 1 and 3.

I see this take a lot whenever people talk about the movie and her character and it's irritating because Naveen was never Lottie's to give up, he didn't love her and barely knew her, and she only liked the idea of marrying a prince, no matter who. Naveen fell in love with Tiana and would have chosen her over Lottie regardless, Lottie did not sacrifice anything for Tiana. She's a decent friend but gets way too much credit just because she wasn't evil or racist to Tiana.
