Custom DJ Build <1850$ (AU)

Hi fellow rides,

I recently bought a Specialized p4 frame, just wondering if a) i should build 27.5" or 26" (both possible with this iframe) and b) what parts i should look at getting to keep the price under 1850 Australian dollars. From quick research to keep price under/ at 1850 AU then i need to build 26"

Getting in to a DJ at 40? Am I Nuts?

Ok I'm 39 but whatever, same thing. 39M 175-180lbs

The long-short story is my 7yo loves riding bikes. He just discovered the local pump track and then the Other local pump track and skate park. Bought him a legit 18" bmx and he's getting some decent use out of it.

I myself rode BMX all through childhood though maybe 18 or 19 and the inevitable fallout from biking happened. Picked back up in the MTB world with a hardtail first at about 32yo and a really nice stumpjumper FS a couple years ago.

Now that my kid loves riding at the parks instead of everything else, I picked up a Kink Gap XL to ride around with him, thinking I could just fall right back in to the BMX world. Now I wasn't exactly well versed in freestyle park riding, but was very well accustomed to dirt jumping a variety of BMX bikes. BUT right now I feel stupid on this BMX, cant pull a single move on the concrete park, and even the dirt jumps we have that aren't gaps can be a bit unstable feeling on this. MTBs on the other hand I feel much more comfortable.

Enter the DJ in my head and the bug just won't go away. I don't plan on getting rid of the Kink, but just adding a DJ to the personal bike library. After reading a bunch through this sub, I'm considering the YT dirt love Core 1 as it's really all I will need for the foreseeable future... But right now the ST version (might as well call it the Core 3) is only $100 more, so why not right? its a Ton more bike for the money, but will I actually care in the end and/or will I look like a complete fucktard at any park with a top spec model and completely incompetent for now? I would love to get something confidence inspiring that I could grow in to and actually getting in to dirt jumping sounds awesome to me.

Am I being stupid here and should I let this whole thing go and just stick with MTB trails and mountains, and just putt around on this BMX I have? Or get that DJ and learn as much as I can?

also any other bike recommendation is appreciated. The YT just seems like a killer bike for the dollar

TL;DR
7yo son loves riding at parks, pump tracks, small jumps, etc.
40yo dad doesn't feel good on a BMX anymore but does on MTBs
40yo dad wants to get in to a DJ (YT dirt love core1 or ST) with currently no DJ skills
is 40yo dad an idiot?

Bought a DJ for my son, sort of by accident.

And I am not sure whether to change it, or actually get one myself.

Short story, I’ve had a spawn bike for my son, and when I saw they had a sale, I bought a Spawn Kotori 24 for my 8 year old son, for his birthday. Suddenly i saw there’s no gears. Found out it’s a dirt jumper. Now I could trade it for another bike, but here’s my feeling: I want to get one too, and have fun with him on the (paved) pump track. There’s also a dirt park not too far from here.

But gents…. Is a father in his late thirties an idiot to do this? Or is it ok to get into?

I’ve looked at a few options. Labomba pro (new frame due to recall) with a few upgrades for 730 eur, is that an ok deal? Or should I look for more options?

I don’t have too much to spend, but I also love good gear 🙂

Cheers!

Transition pbj?

I am 6,3 and I found a transition pbj for a good deal but it is a large. I know these frames tend to run longer. Should I pull the trigger?

billy bonkers or holy roller

Have been using billy bonkers for a while now and I'm thinking about switching to holy rollers, I'm not sure if they will be an upgrade or if I should just get another set of bb.

I mostly ride compact dirt/sandy trails if that helps.

Halo Ridgeline Singlespeed Hub

Hi, I'm interested in buying a 36-h single-speed cassette hub with a bolt-on 135x10 axle and a six-bolt disc mount. I've stumbled upon the Halo RidgeLine Singlespeed hub, which checks all the boxes for me and seems reasonably priced, but I couldn't find any reviews. If you guys have any experience with this particular hub or know of any other better or similar options, it would be of great help to me.

Thank you in advance,

Alright, what bike do i get?

There's a lot of sales going on, and I don't know what's worth it to get. I'm not too worried about price, but between that warranty services, and buying a complete bike, stuff seems to be all over. I'm open to any suggestions, but here's what I've been looking at;

Specialized p3 - not on sale, and not sure if it will go on sale. Lifetime warranty, and $2k

GT La Bomba - not on sale, 3-5 year warranty, and $1200

Commencal Absolut - on sale for $1100, 2 year warranty. I've been really looking at this bike but the limited warranty is pushing me away

YT Dirtlove - on sale for $1100, 5 year warranty, not 100% sure if it'll ship to me

Transition PBJ - on sale for $1700, lifetime warranty, doesn't appear to have a tapered head tube

Evil Faction 2 - on sale for $1600, 3 year warranty, Not sure if it will ship to me

What does the community think? I'm open to other suggestions, hoping to grab something before the sales are over

Gyro or Wrap around brakes?

For the most part I see you guys use Hydraulic brakes and wrap it around the stirrer tube once or twice. I do know hydraulic Gyro exist. But I’m assuming it’s “not in the budget” or “worth the price”.

I know Brett Rheeder designed a Mechanical Gyro for his former Brand Title Mtb.

Curious for those who still run or have run mechanical gyro, what are the pros and cons you’ve noticed? I assume the of power isn’t worth it for most. If a hydraulic gyro was made more affordable, would you be willing to purchase it?

First DJ Bike RM Flow vs P4

Hey all! Need some advice on my fist DJ bike. Some background, I am 6'3" 180lbs 39yrs. I ride lots of front range CO single track and downhill bike parks. Winter has set in and I'm having withdrawals but I've discovered there are velosolution pump tracks all over the front range. I've been using my trail hard tail 29 and it's fun and all but with slack geo and a 160 fork (and 29s) it feels like a limo on a road corse. I decided I need a DJ bike. I'm split between the Rocky Mountian flow or a P.4. I'm leaning towards the flow because of price but the p4 looks really nice. If I do go p4 I would be getting a set of 26" wheels as I feel 27.5 kinda defeats the purpose of a DJ bike. Not much for tricks but my main reason for acquiring would be to spend time at pump tracks to hone my riding skills and build some jump technique I can add to my trail riding. Nothing crazy with the focus mostly on riding pump. And suggestions or advice is appreciated!

I am buying a used Marin Alcatraz. Anything I should look out for?Tips? Good used price?

I am switching from a wheelie bike (c2 collective 2023) because I think that dirtjumpers will be more fun since they have gears, forks, and the frame looks more roomy. I’ve always been inspired by kamilstunts. He rides the Alcatraz and it looks so nice and comfortable. I want to be able to do the same tricks he does. (Kamilstunts on Instagram)

I mainly Wheelie, manual, and do tricks on my C2 Collective that I have right now.
