Whoa!! Dead community alert! Anyone still around and interested in deschooling? I'm currently writing a book. Where did y'all first hear about deschooling?
Hey 👋 sharing a free coding game your littles might be into! Super Code Strike is a new game building/ Lua coding mobile app for iOS. Right now there are free and paid tiers, however it’s entirely free for anyone who wants to use it while it’s in beta and periodically provide feedback on their experience with the app. If you or your kids are into coding there’s also a Discord community where the developers answer questions about game dev, and all things coding related. There are kids all over North America getting creative while learning to code with Super Code Strike and their feedback has directly impacted how the game continues to evolve (so cool!). You can sign up, or find more information here: https://www.supercodestrike.com/beta2022
The current education system is being questioned by many,
If you were to be a teacher or in the education profession, what would you do to change it?
If we were in a deschooling society what would assessments look like for students at university studying a degree in education?
What form of assessments does everyone prefer and why?
Is it safe to say in order for the disestablishment of institutionalised learning there needs to be a breakdown of the social stigma?
The whole point is to show that assessments in the modern school context are terrible indicators for a person's learning as well as their future [i.e. they show nothing about how much a person has learnt but if you dont have 5 GCSEs you're an academic failure] . So what can I suggest as an assessment that doesn't contradict this belief.
Several things stand out to me on this topic. As a high school teacher of 2 years, I had already seen enough. We are told all the time to teach to this learning style or that learning style. You can realy only fit 2-3 learning styles in a lesson. Reality is, there are 25 different learning styles sitting in your classroom. No one can fathom having a classroom or lesson plan that can fit 25 different learning styles. Matter of fact, it is possible. Several educational systems are proven examples that this is possible Democratic education, where students are given the freedom to direct their day. There are no mandatory classes or mandatory teachers. 2 years was enough for me to understand that this isn't working. I quit, and started Makarios Learning Community, a democratic free school along with 2 other founders. It's our first year, and it's going amazing! Feel free to check us out on facebook :)
