School bus

Hey!

My managers son was on Newport Pike four days ago and ran a stopped school bus with the lights activated and the stop sign out and they think they are going to get a traffic violation ticket in the mail.

His son thought since it was a four lane road before he still didn't have to stop even though its a two lane with a left turn lane.

Has anyone gone through this and how did it pan out?

Looked it up and I don't know if the bus he ran through had any cameras. This is his first traffic violation and he has had his license for just over a year.

Thanks!

Trick or Treating

Me and my friends plan on going Trick or Treating this year and of course things have changed since covid because he neighborhoods that I used to go to barely do it anymore. I live in Claymont but I don't mind traveling to get good candy or even just a populated neighborhood. It's always so empty on Halloween anymore. Any suggestions on where to go?

Warning: fake musician scam

If you see someone in front of a shopping center playing an electric violin plugged into a speaker, do not give them money! They are scammers. There's a large group of them going around New Castle county right now setting up in front of shopping centers, with signs claiming to be financially struggling music students, begging for donations over Venmo and cashapp. They will appear to be playing popular music on their violins, but they are actually just miming along to a YouTube video they are playing over their phone on a Bluetooth speaker. I saw one in front of the Aldi at Christiana Town Center setting up out of the back of a Cadillac Escalade with his boss. Don't be fooled, these aren't just kids looking to make a few extra bucks, it's a large organized racket looking to scam people out of their money.

5 digit plate expiration question

So my 5 digit plate expired October 6 2023, I honestly thought It expired later in October but I caught It last night. So I wake up this morning, but a battery for the car because it’s been sitting for a year, air up the tires and take a 2 hour drive round trip (about 114 miles total) and run It through and fail emissions due to o2 sensors, and egr system not being ready. I drove again for another 40 miles and still not ready. So there is a lien on the title so I couldn’t put It in retention and October 6 2024 will make It a year and It falls on a Sunday so I can’t beat that date. The lady at the window told me I had a year and a day before the number purges back into rotation (that would give me until Monday morning to get It through) but I heard and always thought you had until end of day of the day on the expiration date (a year later) before you lose It. Can anyone clarify? I don’t want to drive this car around all weekend long trying to get the emissions ready (the heat/AC is broken) if I’m already SOL.

What's going on with Georgetown Utilities

Having lived Georgetown DE since 2017, I noticed the last few town utility bills have been...absorbent. what could spark it going from 300-ish to almost double, 620 or more?

Notes: I don't have a pool or use the water regularly other than wash twice a week and a short shower everyday- I buy water from the store.

This also covers trash and sewer, but those rates haven't changed.

If anything, I've used it less since June, making this very unusual for me.

Jewish Delis?

Hell all! I moved to Newark back in February from a part of PA where I had numerous Jewish delis around me. However, since moving here I have yet to really find any. I know of Rosenfeld’s in Rehoboth but I was hoping to find somewhere a little closer. I did a search in the subreddit and didn’t come up with anything. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Best Cheesesteak in Middletown, DE?

I’m curious to know what you think is the best cheesesteak in Middletown, DE. There are so many places that serve cheesesteaks, and I'd love to hear your favorites. If there's a place I need to try, let me know!

Here are some spots I know of (and I'm probably missing a few):

  • Cantwell's Tavern
  • Luna's
  • Wawa (which I think wins the "saddest" cheesesteak award)
  • Ochinili's
  • Pat's
  • Cuzinos
  • Jake's Wayback Burgers
  • Jersey Mike's
  • Caruso's Bistro
  • Metro Diner
  • Tom Foolery's
  • Fratelli's
  • Capriotti's
  • Townsend Deli
  • Little Italy in Townsend
  • Naz's Al Hilal
  • Harper's Sandwiches and Such

I know there are a lot of factors to consider, including the roll, the type of cheese, and how the steak is cooked. Personally, I love the ribeye cheesesteak at Cantwell's Tavern, but my all-time favorite was from Immediato’s—Tony made a great cheese steak.

Where do you get your favorite cheesesteak?

*Edit: Looks like I need to try Ochinili's. Also, added other places to the list for people to try. Thanks for the feedback everyone!*

Just saw Tom Carper speak today and hes going senile

The Delaware Senator to dementia pipeline is real. Must be all the chemicals you guys manufacure.

I just blew into town from CA, doing a year of service here with Americorps. We had our swearing in ceremony today and Carper spoke. Charismatic guy but hes obviously losing it. He started off strong and rizzed up the crowd, he was going around the room asking people where they were from. When someone said they were from Santa Cruz he went on a 30 minute monologue of loosely connected grandpa stories that somehow ended with him stressing the importance of exercise.

The worst part was when he called on a South Asian woman named with the name Tuba. It went like this

Tuba: My name is Tuba, like the instrument.

Carper: Sorry what's your name?

Tuba: Tuba, like the instrument.

Carper has a look of confusion on his face.

Woman in the front: Tuba! Like you play a Tuba

Carper: I dont know what that is... Im not familiar.... Oh! Tuba! Like the instrument.

Then after his speech ended he was confused ahout where to go next and asked his handler if they were leaving and she said yes were leaving then shuffled him out.

Not as bad as some of the other Senators like Feinstein, McConnel, and of course our current POTUS but yeesh.

I looked it up and his mom and grandma both had Alzheimers, dudes mind is melting unfortunately.

Best place to get custom ear molds/plugs done?

I need to get custom ear plugs made and have an appointment at ENT allergy of DE's audiologist center in Newark, but I've been a bit skeptical of their care lately. They do them but I am not sure it's their speciality. I see there are other hearing specific places like Brandywine Hearing Center, Hearing Services of Delaware, etc. that I'm wondering if they might produce more quality ear molds and have better experience. I just want them to know what they're doing and produce quality molds and ear plugs.

Any suggestions?

Any 'First Fridays' in DE?

I live near Newark, First Fridays are usually a town shutting down a street and having it walkable with music playing and vendors. Was wondering if anywhere in DE does something like that?

Where is the best specialty butcher in or near New Castle County? Specifically for duck.

I’d like to make a roast duck for Christmas. Where would be a good place to get duck?

BONUS: Where can I get a pint of shucked oysters to make oyster dressing with?

Please stop hoarding all the toilet paper

The port strike does NOT affect toilet paper. Toilet paper is manufactured in the US. Hoard alcohol instead and leave some TP for those of us who shop at BJ's every 2 months.

Are there any single story apartment complexes? Is that a thing? Any around here?

My mom is going to have to sell her house and downsize soon.

Her hope is to sell the house and get a much smaller house.

BUT we're poor. She's got a fixed income with state disability. I know mortgages are cheaper than rent these days. But selling the house and then putting the process in her bank account and nesting it away is much better than selling the house and putting all the proceeds as a down payment on a new house and then living paycheck-to-paycheck again.

Are there any single story apartment complexes that are friendly to old people in New castle / Newark / Wilmington?

Looking for an affordable area to live near Rehoboth beach

Hi Delaware community, my partner and I are possibly moving to Delaware pending he gets this job in Rehoboth he’s in the interview process for. We would need to rent and have 5 animals that we have owned for over 8+ years so it would need to be pet friendly and within a 30 minute commute of Rehoboth. I’m not familiar with the area at all so anyone that can provide me with information on the best areas to look for rentals, I would be so grateful! How do most landlords post their rentals in that area, Zillow, Marketplace, etc? Mostly everything I’m finding seems like a vacation rental, not residential. Are there any dog friendly beaches close to Rehoboth?

Does animal control do anything about cats?

A nuisance neighbor of mine has recently acquired a mama cat and her five kittens. The cats are outside cats, litter pans are clearly visible in the front yard and they roam the street and neighbors yards (mine included, as they have frequent visits to my back deck, trying to get inside and upsetting my own inside cat). I'm a huge cat lady and adore cats but I'm worried about the long term effects of these cats roaming around. The kittens are so small and easily could be a meal for a fox or a hawk. Without proper human socializing they can easily become feral and let's not even begin to think about breeding six months down the road. Four female cats can produce 25+ kittens in one breeding season. I don't want to assume anything but I highly doubt that the homeowner has any plans to have the kittens properly vaccinated or fixed. I don't want to jump the gun and have the cats taken away but as winter approaches I worry about them being left to the elements. If I were to call animal control in the future, would they take action or are we to just suffer as a community as these cats take over?

Just a bit of back story, this neighbor isn't someone that can easily be spoken to or approached regarding things like this. Since she has moved in the cops have been to her house nearly every other month for domestic disputes, she has locked her own small children out of the house (at night in December) and the children have since been removed by the state nearly a year ago. We live in a suburban cul-de-sac neighborhood and none of the neighbors wish to socialize with her or even approach her as she responds in a defensive and aggressive manner.

Simple unemployment Q I’m having trouble answering - is a “notice of monetary determination” the same as claim approval? (more in body)

I cannot find an exact answer, I’m searched this sub and Google and seen conflicting responses.

I received this notice that my UI claim processed with a stamped date of 3 weeks ago, I signed up for direct deposit before the process date but haven’t received anything yet. My claim is interstate, I received the “additional info needed” email a day after I filed, and I emailed the required docs and then received the monetary notice in the mail, so at least someone is checking the email address.

For those that have gone through this process, do you receive an actual confirmation letter AFTER the notice of determination? And if it didn’t go through, did you receive a denial letter? Also, how long did that second letter take to arrive (I assume it’s a letter, all the official docs I receive snail mail and the only emails are information requests).

Also yes, I’ve done every weekly certification, can’t even reach the automated line on the UI phone (only hear the beeping dail tone), and the UI handbook is not clear.

Thank you
