An Introduction to Death Note:
Death Note is a critically acclaimed Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and published by Shueisha Inc. first released in December 2003 as a serialized magazine.
A high school student named Light Yagami stumbles upon a notebook from a God of Death named Ryuk, which has the power to kill anyone by writing people’s names on it. With this, Light decides to create ‘a new world’ that is free of evil.
Death Note has since received various adaptations and novelizations, such as the animation adaptation by Madhouse—directed by Tetsuro Araki—the 2015 TV drama, multiple live–action movies, spin–off novels, and a musical adaptation.

I wanted to add L as well but I was too lazy 🫠🫠🫠🫠
Keep in mind I'm talking about the scene where L and Light were talking on the Rooftop while it was raining just before L dies. This is just my own interpretation of the conversation they had in the scene which probably might not be true.
First, we come across L who's standing out in the rain when Light finds him. At first it's just a normal conversation (albeit with L subtly implying that he's gonna die), but then, he suddenly blindsides Light by asking if he ever told the truth. Of course the implication here is that he wants to just drop this game and be real with him for once. This is also why I think L was standing in the heavy rain. He was basically assuring Light that even if he was recording the conversation, it wouldn't pick up anything in the rain so they were free to talk truthfully to each other. And I think Light gets the memo because he came up with an overly complicated explanation that was unnecessary when a simple 'yes' would've been enough which is something only Kira would've done. In this way, he was basically telling L "yes, I am Kira" in a more indirect way. In this way, he was being truthful to L.
TLDR; This whole conversation was basically L asking Light if he's Kira and Light confirms it in a way that had a lot of implications and double meanings that both sides were aware of and play along with.
Of course maybe I am just overthinking and seeing something that's not there but I just wanted to share my thoughts.
Bonus question: How do you think the conversation would've gone if Light just straight up told L he was Kira?

Happy birthday to our beloved L!! And happy Halloween to everyone!! ( ˘ ³˘)♥❤️❤️❤️
Finally my eye bags could be put into good use 🙄
Any bands, artists, albums, songs, etc. Kamelot is probably the one thing that most reminds me of Death Note; other than them being my favorite band and favorite anime/manga respectively, Kamelot has a lot of philosophy-related songs that often pertain between good and evil (particularly the Faustian-based Epica + The Black Halo duology which is really good music), and I think a bit of justice-related themes are involved too.
What are your thoughts? What other music reminds you of Death Note?
**tl:dr for those who don't like reading walls of text
I want to start by saying in no way do I support Light/Kira's methods, but I wanted to make this post to challenge the popular perception regarding Light and Mikami's thoughts on eventually targeting lazy people and demonstrate that at it is wrong at its core but it makes sense in Light and Mikami's head and it isn't merely Kira trying to find arbitrary excuses to kill more people.
Let us look first at the definition of laziness: Google AI assistant defines laziness as "unwillingness to exert effort or engage in an activity, even though one is capable of doing so" and I think the term "capable" is very important, especially when we unpack the term "ability".
Takada in the manga panel states clearly that "people with an ability who do not use that ability for the good of society will also not be tolerated" which is actually a bit different from targeting only the lazy. My interpretation of this has been that lazy people fall under the umbrella of those with an ability who do not use that ability to contribute to society as opposed to the other way around.
I do think it is important to take into account Light and Mikami's perspectives on self sacrifice especially when we we consider their lives, actions, personality, and the nature of collectivism in Eastern societies. Light for one has stated he feels what he is doing as Kira is a "sacrifice" for the good of humanity and Mikami, while not using those exact words, has stated something similar:
"The reason I became a prosecutor is because of the frustration and helplessness I felt over all the emotional and physical abuse I witnessed as a child. All the young people out into the world should have their own goals, and use their abilities to their fullest to contribute to society." (Chapter 91)
Recall Mikami's backstory, where as a child he risked his safety to protect victims of bullying, and became a victim of bullying himself. Mikami likely viewed himself as someone who sacrificed himself for the greater good. Light and Mikami, in all their arrogance, see themselves as the best society has to offer and in their minds they are giving the best of their hard work and ability to make the world a better place. And it is outright projection. If they can do it, so should everyone else.
This is all to say I feel like it is not a stretch to say Light and Mikami see those who live selfishly as opposed to giving themselves up for the good society as falling into the category of not using their ability to contribute to society, or "lazy".
Consider the couple billionaires that we know of who can theoretically end homelessness or other forms of inequality but choose not to. Going back to the Google definition of laziness, they sure are capable, but they do not simply because they are unwilling.
I think this pretty much sums up Light's views on the selfish and wealthy.
Don't get me wrong, what Light and Mikami ultimately want and suggest is absolutely horrid, but I feel that stating Light and Mikami are only insinuating they want to only target say those who struggle with a physical disability or mental illness when they say lazy people will not be tolerated is quite an oversimplification of their perspective and intentions. And it is not to say those individuals won't be targeted, but my argument is that those who have the greater resources to help and the means to make the world better would be their primary targets and held to a higher standard, especially when you take projection into consideration.
So I guess tl;dr, or summary of my thoughts:
Mikami's thoughts and statements, and by extension, Light's, regarding people with abilities contributing to society was primarily directed at the talented, educated, intelligent and privileged (or the kind of people who could contribute significantly). Of course they meant to include the general populace, but those who have more ability and means to contribute/do good are more likely than not going to be held to a higher standard than the average person. The discourse on wanting to target lazy people isn't merely an excuse to kill for the sake of killing but comes from Light and Mikami's projection of what constitutes selfless sacrifice for the good of humanity.
Light was very young when he received the death note, and had been underexposed to his own fallibility and of the human ability to seek goodness after straying. It is understandable and expected that he deny the possibility of his mistake after being exposed to the possibility. To so benignly write a “criminal’s” name in a book and this mean that you have murdered someone… It is quite understandable that he defend against this possibility in whatever way he can. It is unfortunate and awful nonetheless, but still, understandable.
I imagine the police had little belief in the ability to return to good, and Light may have picked up some of this from his father. I’ve not read anything that gives better context to L’s beliefs, but he does spend much of his time pursuing criminals. Does he view working with Wedy and Aiber a simple necessary evil? He’s so well educated, it seems impossible he wouldn’t be exposed to the idea that humans lack free will and are products of their environment. If he believed Light guilty, why might he not attack him on that emotional level? Is it because there would be a possibility that Light simply stop killing, or killed himself, and then L might “lose” his impeccable record?
Hi guys, i just bought both of the light novels but i’m wondering if it’s necessary to watch the live action movies before reading them, as i can’t really find an outright answer online. thanks!
Just had this done . First tattoo in a fair few years but fancied something different.let me know what you all think. (Picture not great I know).

Criticism is welcome but try to be nice lol
Near acquired knowledge of the Death Note’s existence from a cop who overheard Higuchi telling L about it over the headset when he was arrested. Does it seem strange to anyone that L would make Higuchi give him such sensitive information about how Kira kills out in public where people can hear?
Even if they are all cops at the scene, did L ever consider that if someone overheard the information that it could potentially fall into the wrong hands? And wouldn’t it make more sense to cuff and blindfold Higuchi and then take him to an interrogation room where nothing can be leaked before asking him how he kills? Did he feel Higuchi was a threat to attempt suicide again and needed to be questioned on the spot?
Was this just for plot convenience (so that Near has a way of finding out about the notebook), or is it possible that L really thought that far ahead, hoping that if he died that there would be a chance for someone investigating outside of the Japanese police (specifically one of his successors) to get a hold of the information at some point? Or maybe L just didn’t consider the possibility of an information leak, or didn’t care. Still, you would think he wouldn’t want the public to know how Kira kills, at least not right away, because any number of people could want to get their hands on it and use the power for themselves.
