Finished the manga looking for a tldr of the show and ending.

Alright so after getting a strange amount of ads for this show again starting end of last year I finally decided to rewatch and it and then follow through on reading the manga.

So from my understanding the basic lore of this show is, Ganta was originally born into this world to be tested on but his mother had a last minute change of heart. Thus led to Shiro being the test subject for what would eventually lead to the branch of sin and all the craziness. A very deranged and sadistic scientist that looks strangely identical to promoter tamaki was addicted and infatuated with the results of Shiros tests while Gantas mom stupidly followed orders.

After Gantas stupid mother sent Ganta away Shiro loses her mind even more than she already had leading her to create a seperate personality Ganta calls the red man. The deranged scientist creates a method to essentialy keep himself alice using other peoples bodies in order to continue working on/with Shiros fucked up personality and abilities, while Shiro herself and maybe Ganta both dont age as quickly? Blah blah blah skipping to the end Ganta finds out Shir is the red man and fights Shiro who thought she wanted Ganta to kill her but actually just wants to be happy ao Ganta and Shiro both live "freely" with Ganta visiting her every day.

So the fucked up scientist who started this all was the old man all scared up at the start of the show and who also took over the mockingbirds body. Promoter tamaki is just himself not reincarnated as anyone else like the scientist. Gantas mom is stupid, and Shiro is the red man because she needed it to endure the experiments being done on her?

Did I get everything right? Did I miss anything else about the story relating to those main characters?

Okay, I think it's time that we talk about....

this panel:

https://preview.redd.it/lllwab9ipaae1.jpg?width=728&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=02c90b8428d674b8466a7d5a93964fb1da4184d9

I was watching u/OneGrumpyLumpy's analysis on Deadman Wonderland (and there was a lot I didn't agree with, and I would like to apologize, bc I had a days-long tantrum about that, and it was not my proudest moment, so I would like to apologize), and what he had to say about this page was... interesting. Honestly, with what he said, that this page breaks the series, is less of a problem with the writing of the series, and moreso a problem with translation and localization.

Let me explain:

Deadman Wonderland... has a major problem with translations. Be they official or fanmade. Often times, translations will be straight up WRONG, or punched up, which often makes the series look more edgy than it really is. For example, I've taken the liberty of retranslating this from Volume 8:

https://preview.redd.it/lledq50pwaae1.png?width=5999&format=png&auto=webp&s=9e5f02accb09e39cee5bb7d6562934be4ea6444b

https://preview.redd.it/uui8025qwaae1.png?width=3000&format=png&auto=webp&s=63107bd482d77f3f4a1c88488b3bbebf1f763ba3

For some reason, they made Minatsuki into a raging transphobe in the official releases, whereas in the original Japanese (where I based the re-translation from), she's much more receptive to Chaplin's wishes, to the point where they become friends, despite being so different. I have a billion gripes with VIZ's handling of the series, but that's a story for a YouTube video. Anyways, that's just one of the many mistranslations with this series that I've noticed.

But back to Shiro, the topic at hand. While VIZ's translation isn't the best, it does give a general understanding of the story, the way it was originally intended to be experienced. But their handling of this line has its fair share of problems. Observe:

https://preview.redd.it/hotva4vtxaae1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=0e485d6143f2b48aca391e0df24bfe4d1f29c9ab

This is a pretty accurate translation, but that's the problem: it's a translation. It doesn't have any punch to it. And plus, the way this is translated, comes into a few problems:

  1. The translation almost makes it almost seem like it's SHIRO who came to this realization, rather than Ganta, who's suspicions are being confirmed by Shiro.
  2. It makes it seem like Shiro's not aware of her multiple personalities, when we've seen them interacting in her mind before.
  3. Think about it like this: The alter Shiro we've followed for much of the series is the personality she created to cope with Shiro's loneliness. The Wretched Egg she created to cope with pain. This is the first time we're seeing the REAL Shiro. The one who isn't held back by Mother Goose. And she's like, 'Is this who I am?'

It's not that VIZ's version is wrong, but it doesn't capture what the story is going for in the slightest. And to do that, we have to break down the original translation.

This is the original page, in the original Japanese:

https://preview.redd.it/1ub68y4mqaae1.png?width=723&format=png&auto=webp&s=640e3110fffb2116a501a0b3ce559b32ea4988dc

Which reads: "Hitori no Shiro... nandane" in it's romanaized form. Time to break it down:

ăČべり (hitori) - Now, this is complex word, because it's typically translated as 'to be alone'. However, in this context, it's used as an adverb, so we'll keep it that way.

た (no) - in this context, it's following an adverb

ă‚·ăƒ (shiro) - Shiro's name, typically refers to herself in the third person, usually in her childlike personality, as a sign of immaturity, though she switches to the formal 私 (watashi) when referring to herself in the final act of the series

ăȘんだね (nan da ne) - typically denotes a question, often used at the end of sentences.

So, to the best of my ability, breaking down this translation, and translating it myself, it'll come out tooooo...

"I'm just Shiro, aren't I?"

...Buuuut, that's still not a localization. That's just a translation. and you have to account the context to this: Ganta is coming to this conclusion, and Shiro is confirming his suspicions. So, while this may not be an accurate translation, I've come up with a localization that carries the weight of this series-turning moment. At least I hope.

Drumroll, please!

https://preview.redd.it/gat01wxi1bae1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=f72ab032251295d40f4e56d8a34b27f200dafedc

https://preview.redd.it/2i1fmxwj1bae1.png?width=1500&format=png&auto=webp&s=29ef9e3865b02ff477a07cd9ce6a2aa80d5d32cb

And there you go! The phrase "Two sides of the same coin" perfectly and accurately represents that this is the REAL Shiro. It's not that there WERE no alternate personalities, it's that they were just that: PERSONALITIES! Maybe we could've explored that more and her relationship with the twins if a balding, edgelord 26-year-old man with a dumbass catchphrase hadn't hogged her spotlight I mean, maybe VIZ didn't elect to release a volume every other month, maybe this wouldn't have been as contentious as it is.

And it's not helped by (god forbid) the Deadman Wonderland wiki apparently using the anime's (wildly inaccurate) English Dub as well as these fan translations as canon, further perpetuating these mistranslations, and confusions to new fans.

While this is not the last mistranslation in the series, I hope I've opened your eyes, somewhat! I'm just trying to help y'all out!

Question about the manga ending.

I know im years late but I just finished the manga and I'm a bit confused. At the end, It looks like she woke up but I couldn't tell for sure did Shiro wake up at the end? And if so does Ganta find out shes awake? And also was she in a prison?? I would feel so bad for her if after all that she still is not free, Ganta is still out there going to school living his best life and she's still trapped within concrete walls??! That's what I got out of it anyway. Are there any explanations or any other view points that I may have missed?

I don’t understand Hagire’s motovations

Hey. I watched the anime a long time ago and kept remembering how fun it was so I finally read the manga. I liked it overall, wouldn’t call it a masterpiece, but it did leave me entertained. I liked how the writer tried to explore the topic of absurdism vs nihilism.

However, it would be easy to brush off some things that are not properly explained to the absurd, aka “it’s just how it is”. And that includes Hagire. I never truly understood the man’s motivation. Heck, I am actually confused in the first place what was the initial expected research target for his and Sorae’s work as well, until it evolved in to what it has become. Does Hagire want to die, or live? Why does he, a scientist, want to fight so much? So is he power hungry or not? His whole thing makes no sense to me.

Can someone help me understand? Perhaps there is something important I missed in the story? Or is he just a crazy villain for the sake of being a crazy villain?

Also, how does the personality move from body to body even work? I assume he deletes the memories of the person, and then invades their body? What? How come no-one continued this research after all the events, considering it could have potential use for the good?

Uncensored version for the anime

I'm looking to watch Deadman wonderland for the first time. I really like the intro, the theme, and the artstyle; however, my happiness didn't last long when I noticed that the anime and the gorgeous intro have been censored. Since I'm not subscribed currently to any streaming service, can someone confirm to me if it's still censored? If so, do you know where to find the uncensored version, other than the blu-ray version?

Is it worth to read the manga?

I never post on Reddit but I have to know this. It's not really my genre but I had it on my watching list not knowing where it came from and I wanted to give it a try. So I watched it and I kinda liked the art style and setting but in the end it was really unsatisfying. I don't know how to say it but I felt like I was robbed because it could have been better. There were so many questions at the "end" of the Anime like why didn't they run away? Will Ganta prove he is innocent? How comes that Shrio is the red guy? Who was the old guy she fought with? What was the function of Gantas Mother? Will Ganta find out and if so what will happen because I thought they were friends? Will this whole psychopathic carnival fights end because the few guys escaping? There ar so many characters shown for a few minutes without explaining anything about them or there story. So I liked the idea but there were so many things that bothered me in the Anime. I'm not really a guy that reads Mangas that's why I'm asking if it's worth reading the story? Is the end satisfying? Is it a Manga/Anime you enjoyed and will remember? Are there any unsolved questions in the end? Or would you just recommend watching some other stuff and forgetting about this Anime?

Drawing request

So, I was just surfing the internet when a great idea popped into my mind. I`d like to kindly ask any artist in this subreddit if they could make a School Girl Shiro drawing. Not anything nsfw or sexual, but a drawing of Shiro if she started to go w Ganta to school AFTER the end of the manga. Please, if there are any artists seeing this, I`d be very happy for this.🙏🙏🙏

Gantas mark

If you look closely you will notice that the marks do not look the same. Ganta rewrote the mark on shiros palm when she was in a coma

So I just finished Deadman Wonderland and there’s a character in the opening who I have yet to identify. I’m thinking it’s either Shinji, Nagi, or the Mockingbird. Please help. Thank you.
