Grad student Housing

I am an incoming graduate student starting in the fall of 2025. I will be moving from Canada. I was wondering where most graduate students live. I would like to have my own 1 bedroom apartment. I also have a car hence I would not mind driving 20, to 25 minutes daily. Thank You

Thinking of Transferring Out

I'm a '28 and am not liking the school. The small campus makes me feel trapped and in a cycle. I hate how few people there are. I do not like how rural it is; there is nothing to do on the weekends. The partying, hook-up, and drinking culture does not suit me well. Dartmouth is the only college I know that considers Wednesday an "on-night," and even though I have gone out a few times before, I do not much enjoy it. Because of the small class size, even if I try to distance myself from the culture, it is forced upon me. I'm sure that I'll sob when I have to go back at the end of break.

I know alumni that have graduated merely tolerating the school and never truly loving it how so many claim to. Is it worth transferring? My complaints are specific to Dartmouth. I worked so hard to get in, and I would struggle to get into a similar-caliber school. Does it get better?

Additionally, if there are any '28s that feel the same way, please reach out.

Please help!!!!

I was just wondering what Dartmouth looks for in a student. What's the vibe> What do they value? In terms of personality or you know characteristics.

Which third supplement is best to write about? Do I focus more on Dartmouth/academics or on myself?

Out of the seven different options they give you, I can't decide whether I should write more in depth about my major/Dartmouth or just having fun with it on the "Celebrate your nerdy side" prompt, especially with such a short Why Dartmouth prompt (100 Words). Any advice?

Dartmouth MEng

Hi Everyone,

I was hoping to gain some greater insights on the MEng program at Dartmouth. For folks who have gone through the program, can you speak to the rigor, coursework, and overall how the program was? Is the MEng far less competitive than the MEM? Also please include profile/stats.

Thoughts on interviews?

I just had my interview and I feel like it went really well (at least I think)!Am I delulu to feel more hopeful for my admissions chances? I know that it’s a relatively small part of the process, but could it be the aspect that sets me over the top? I would love to hear how y’all’s interviews went and if they all asked similar questions. Also, are they all thirty minutes? I really feel like the interview went well from my perspective, but are there any tips for telling if you really made an impact on your interviewer?

Sincerely, A hopeful ED candidate

GPA ruined chance

Hello! As of right now, my UW is 3.6 and W is 4.1 due to lack of help I had with my mental disability in freshman/sophomore year. I thought this would ruin my chances completely, yet I applied ED and got an interview. Does this mean I’m not completely done for? Since I got an interview, is my gpa not that bad?

Dartmouth Greek life

How exactly does the Greek life system in the US work? I’m applying to Dartmouth as an international student, an I’m intended to have pre-med pathway. Should I involve in Greek life?

if u aren't white, how much do u feel pressured to code switch in hanover?

hi all, i'm a graduating senior at another college looking at lab jobs at dartmouth because i have family and a support network nearby. my partner hasn't gone to college and wouldn't be in school if we moved to hanover. they're biracial (french creole) - most white people register them as white, most nonwhite people register them as latino or black. culturally/ethnically, they resonate with blackness. we've only ever lived together in places that are predominantly nonwhite, and they're nervous that if we move to a predominantly white state/area that they'll have to be code switched all the time and essentially pretend to be white / pretend not to be black, which they don't want. i'm wondering if any of y'all who go to dartmouth might have insight on how racial dynamics are in hanover, especially for people who aren't personally affiliated w the university. based on what i've said, can you think of ways my partner could find community in hanover, or should we just be looking elsewhere? any personal experience to share? tips? thoughts?

The dreaded "What's up there?" Interview question.

Got my interview offer, and it's in 7 hours from now. For context, I am interviewing over Google Meet from South East Asia, specifically Bangladesh.

I was just wondering, in the event that I get asked the regular "What's up there" or the "Tell me more about yourself" question, is there a particular rule of thumb that helps ace that answer?

All responses, speculative or experiential, are appreciated. Thanks!

Is there interest in Women’s Self-Defense among Dartmouth students?

I’m not sure why there doesn’t seem to be a women’s self-defense program at Dartmouth. When I was an undergrad, I don’t recall there being one either, which is a shame, because I’m pretty sure there’s a need for it. I now teach martial arts in the Upper Valley, and have been contemplating offering a women’s self-defense course in Hanover for a very low cost (~$10/hour). There is already a course offered by the Lebanon Police Department, so I’m unsure if there is demand for another one. For what it’s worth, I am male. I have 32 years of martial arts experience in about a dozen different arts.

I can say that my approach would be quite different from the R.A.D. curriculum that the Lebanon PD is offering. R.A.D. stands for “Rape Aggression Defense”, and it basically is designed for a very clear-cut kind of assault scenario where you’re more or less fighting for your life. As such, it teaches you to channel your adrenaline into a very active and vigorous defense consisting of screaming, striking vital points and running away. This isn’t unique—many programs share a similar philosophy. This isn’t a very versatile approach, though, because it’s so intense that you have to reserve your training for the most extreme situations. We can still find ourselves in situations where we’re uncomfortable or even actively being victimized but, for any number of reasons, we don’t think it’s worth it to maim someone.

I believe having options is the most valuable thing in any dangerous situation, and I tend to dislike relying on striking for self-defense. I also don’t like to teach a bunch of rote responses. Instead, I like to just focus on a few important principles that can be expressed in many ways, some gently, some harder, and I like keeping constant contact to gain and maintain control over a situation. This allows a person to adjust the intensity of their response according to what they think is appropriate. This reflects the influence of my two main styles, Taijiquan and Baguazhang, both of which emphasize following an opponent’s force and turning it against them. Instead of being forced to choose between breaking someone’s ribs or not resisting at all, my approach would allow for a lot more flexibility. It would also not rely so much on striking, which just isn’t a realistic option for most people (female or otherwise) without extensive training, in my opinion.

I’d tailor the class to any specific scenarios or concerns students might have. Since I don’t really have comparable life experience, I think it only makes sense to follow the class’s lead. You tell me what worries you, and it’s my job to give you some tools to address those worries. A common issue, for example, may be freezing up, shutting down, feeling paralyzed, etc., when we find ourselves in a scary situation. I also hear about weighing competing concerns, like if it's worth it to "make a scene", hesitancy at breaking "social decorum", how obligated they are to please others, what if they make the other person angry(er) by not cooperating, and will they be supported by their coworkers/school/family afterward if they take action. I aim to speak to all of these concerns and more, and not just “here’s what you do when they grab your wrist this way vs. that way". While many self-defense courses do a good job instilling confidence in students, it’s usually done in conjunction with aggressively defending yourself, as in striking or shoving and screaming “No!” very loudly. Again, I’m not sure this approach actually addresses the concerns listed above. I want the skills you learn and the confidence you get from them to be applicable to not just the hyper-violent serial sexual offender (not that common) but also to the casual acquaintance who maybe doesn’t deserve to be sent to the hospital but could use a firm and memorable lesson about getting too handsy (not that uncommon, sadly).

I don’t have anything concrete planned yet, I’m just trying to gauge interest. I’d love to hear any thoughts or questions. If you’d be interested in a self-defense course, just let me know, either below in the comments or as a DM.

Does not having an impressive gpa ruin my chances of admission?

I have an amazing track record of extracurriculars and internships, teaching thousands of students STEM and leading multiple clubs and organizations, including a nonprofit. However, I have a gpa of 3.8, and this semester it will go down with a C in AP Bio. I was just curious, does this ruin my chances?

DDS questionable use of funding

Is anyone else concerned about the way Dartmouth Dining Services is spending money? Palm scanners in foco? Really? Why aren't we just adding one or two more cashiers during rush hour? Aren't there better improvements that could be made, not just at foco but around campus?

Additionally, meal plans are not only expensive but also required for all students living on campus (even those with their own kitchens in senior apartments and medical/dietary restrictions, speaking from personal experience). Meal swipe equivalencies don't usually cover a full meal outside of foco, and everyone knows how DBA is in short supply at the end of the term if not well into a negative balance.

These items are indicative to me that DDS is not acting in the interest of the students. Nobody asked for palm scanners, we asked to be able to afford food through a meal plan if it has to be required. Not to mention DDS Director Jon Plodzik's history at UNH. I'm concerned. Anyone else feeling similarly?

SAT Scores

I’m an int’l applicant from Turkey, and I attend a rigorous STEM based high school. But I want to study Geography & International Relations and my extracurriculars and essays (my entire application theme) are all based on that 2 majors. However, my SAT is 780 meanwhile Reading&Writing is 670. Would that be a concern?? I am extremely stressful these days. (I’m an ED applicant btw.)
