Just a thought

Hey so I’m curious as to why people is a vpn over the tails os and vice versus. Is there a benefit or loss to either platform. Don’t they both do the same thing essentially?

Metadata

How does metadata play a role the viewing or transaction process? Assume no “tails”. Tor over VPN. If someone was a victim of a a phishing attack, xmr emptied several months ago, does that mean something? What about purchasing xmr from “local Monero” using a personal Cashap?

Any info helps, my son is completely distraught right now

P2P Whatsapp, Instagram and Metaverse As A PWA

positive-intentions

Hello everyone,

chat.positive-intentions.com

I'm excited to share with you a messaging application I've been working on that might interest you. This is a chat app designed to work within your browser, with a focus on browser-based security and decentralization.

What makes this app unique is that it doesn't rely on messaging servers to function. Instead, it works based on your browser's javascript capabilities, so even low-end devices should work.

Here are some features of the app:

  • Secure messaging: Your messages are encrypted, making them more secure.
  • File sharing: Easily share files using WebRTC technology and QR codes.
  • Voice and video calls: Connect with others through voice and video calls.
  • Shared virtual space: Explore a shared mixed-reality space, similar to a metaverse.
  • Image board: Browse and share images in a scrollable format, similar to Instagram.

Your security is a top priority. Here's how the app keeps you safe:

  • Decentralized authentication: No central server is required for login, making it harder for anyone to gain unauthorized access.
  • Unique IDs: Your ID is cryptographically random, adding an extra layer of security.
  • End-to-end encryption: Your messages are encrypted from your device to the recipient's device, ensuring only you and the recipient can read them.
  • Local data storage: Your data is stored only on your device, not on any external servers.
  • Self-hostable: You have the option to host the app on your own server if you prefer.

The app is still in the early stages and I'm exploring what's possible with this technology. I'd love to hear your feedback on the idea and the current state of the app. If you have any feature requests or ideas, I'm all ears in the comments below!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Note 1: As a solo-developer, i dont have the capacity or knowlege to do anything like an "official launch". i expect the app will progressively get better with feedback from users (as it has so far).

Note 2: I think the app has (approximately?) reached a feature-complete state, but i'm not sure. I'm looking for feedback on what features are missing, and what features are not needed. The next step would be to grow the number of users by making the app more user-friendly and easier to use. (I need your help on this)

Note 3: The app is not open source yet (sorry), but im open to answering questions about how the code is working (more details can be found in the docs). Open sourcing the app is something i would like to do in the future, but not a priority right now. Some parts of the app are open source.

Note 4: The UI is a clunky implementation of Material-UI. It's something i will fix as i move towards open sourcing the UI components. i will take the opportunity to also give more attention to a "desktop friendly UI" (right now the app is best experienced on a mobile device).

Note 5: Id like to keep the wording i have for "pods" although i have recieved feedback about it not being clear what it means. A pod is what you might think of as like a "chat room" and will be further developed to support group-chat. you can create a pod with a connected peer in the contact-details-page. The wording "pod" comes from how a group of whales is called a pod.

Cake Wallet XMR balance suddenly zero

My Cake Wallet XMR balance was correct as of yesterday, but I was having trouble re-syncing. Today, after syncing, it's suddenly zero?! Not just that, but I also don't see any previous transactions either. Really hoping this is a glitch. Can anyone help suggest what I can do to fix this, if this is indeed a glitch?

Edit: never mind, just rescanned from an earlier date, all good! 😅

History/references made here?

Sorry, I can’t really find this out over the search bar/am a noob*. I’ve read the bible, but was wondering where to go next- I don’t understand most of the posts here and was wondering if there was any other resources for a basic history of the dark net (silk road, dread, etc).

Where do I start after I’ve read the bible, the wiki, and anything else I can understand at this point? Is there any other guides?

Is it safe to use my home wifi to make transactions over the dark web if I use tails? What additional tools should I use to ensure safety and anonymity, or likewise if i used a public wifi instead?

Forgive my ignorance but can't anyone on a public wifi theoretically monitor any activity that's routed through the network? How do I make sure my transactions are secure over a public network? If I use a private network, wouldn't that defeat the purpose because I'm going through a telecom company using my name?

Unable To Access Dread For Weeks

See title. Haven't been able to get Dread to load for several weeks. Have tried everything I'm aware of, it just simply will not load for me.

I've seen others with the same problem, but I also see several people commenting on those posts saying they have no issues getting on whatsoever.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? For ref, im attempting to view it on Tails OS, as well as via the Brave browser.

GPG Suite on Mac-excuse my noobishness(long post)

To start off, I am aware that for air tight opsec the kleopatra program inside tails is best. However, tails is causing me it’s own nightmares which I will make a post on in the future, either here or in r/tails. In the meantime, I have been trying the multiple options to get PGP up and running on macOS, all of which are doing my head in. To avoid making one post that’s too long for anyone to want to read or reply to, I thought I’d make a post for each method I have tried, beginning with GPG suite.

-I have downloaded the program following the instructions in this videohttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-d7MeBeiBU and am more than a tad confused. First off, in the GPG keychain, I do not appear to have 2 distinct keys(one to upload and the other for myself), I appear to have one single key, whose ‘type’ is ‘secret/public’, and there is no ‘notepad’ or ‘begin signed message’ layout of the key. Surely my public and private key are not one and the same?!? Using this supposably one key to encrypt a message was not difficult, however I’m am a bit baffled as to how I would go about uploading it to a DNM. I was given the option to upload it (the public key) to the key server, however I am guessing this would be poor opsec, and I cannot seem to find instructions on how to upload it elsewhere. If it is possible to do so, some detailed instructions would be great.

Furthermore, there are no instructions on how I would access or use the private key. As he points out around 4.13, either myself or the intended recipient would need this private key to decrypt anything encrypted w. my public key.

However, in pretty much the same breath, he seemingly contradicts himself and demonstrates 2 ways in which to decrypt, neither of which require accessing or entering a private key. In the first method, he clicks on the encrypted file twice, in the second he right clicks it, goes to ‘services’ and then ‘decrypt file’. Both these methods produce the decrypted file and a box saying ‘absolute trusted signature’, which apparently means that he possesses the correct key to decrypt it, however, he never has to access this key or paste it anywhere. This had me confused beyond belief-if a file can be decrypted without a private key what is the purpose of encryption?!? Am I being dumb or is the decryption using the private key ‘automated’ in some way, meaning that if someone were to receive a file I encrypted with the public key they would not be able to decrypt it, but if they had access to my computer(on which the key is installed but not easily visible) they would? If that’s the case, I found it a bit hard to understand why at least entering the password to my key is not required, as it is to encrypt the file originally.

Many thanks in advance and my apologies to anyone who is as confused by my rambling as I am by this whole ordeal! Feel free to DM me if that would be easier.

Tracking phones

Recently I've came across many people online saying they can track a cellphone location, using only the phone number. Is this a real thing? Is this legal? Is this service open for everyone?is there a way to block this from my device or try to track my own device and see if it works?
