#/r/cursedimages rules

UPDATED Nov. 15, 2024

📱 Click here for mobile format

The rules have been restructured, as of November 2024. No one wanted to read and remember like a dozen rules, moderators included. Don't worry, the rules are pretty much the exact same as they were before, just in a more digestible format.

If anything here seems weird, confusing, unnecessary, or simply a really bad idea, please leave a comment with your thoughts. We will try to get back to you as soon as we can.

Note: Please report content that breaks the following rules

Reports are a very helpful way to get the moderators attention. Reporting rule-breaking content will help us do our jobs quickly and efficiently, and can get images or comments removed if enough people submit reports.

Rule 1) All submissions must be CURSED IMAGES

It's... complicated. This video from a retired moderator explains it better than we can.

A "Cursed image" is a picture that makes you question nearly every aspect of it, causing confusion, fear, or dread. Some questions the viewer could ask are:

  • Who made this image, and why?
  • Who is the person / people in this image?
  • Where did this image come from?
  • What is happening in this image?
  • What led to this image being captured?
  • How are the actions in this image taking place?

(Sound familiar? You might have heard of the previous "3W1H" model...)

Here is a list of common things that are NOT CURSED (And some subreddits that might like them better):

❗️ MOBILE VIEWERS: The table below is difficult to view on most mobile devices. Please check out the 📱Mobile Formatted rules instead.

Prohibited ContentReasoningAlternative subreddit(s)
Memes and Humorous Images, or Pop Culture ReferencesIf your image contains a well known meme, or is supposed to be funny, it isn't cursed. Refrain from obvious pop culture references, characters, or screenshots from well-known movies, TV, video games, or celebrities. But, humor is subjective, and exceptions may be allowed at the reviewing moderator's discretion./r/CursedMemes, /r/BlursedImages, /r/Hmmm
Low-Effort / Mundane ContentAlthough we always appreciate original content, please avoid posting low-effort images, such as mundane pictures of you and your friends in odd poses in the dark, Halloween costumes and weird outfits, pictures of slightly weird objects, or pictures of literal trash./r/WhatIsThis, /r/Halloween_Costumes, /r/MildlyPenis, /r/DontPutYourDickInThat, /r/NeckbeardNests
Weird or Gross FoodAnyone can make unusual or unappealing food, and it goes hand-in-hand with the above rule. Although food-focused images can be cursed, simple odd food combinations or "baked beans where they shouldn't be" type images, won't fit the bill./r/CursedFoods, /r/BeansInThings
AI Generated ContentIf you type a prompt into an image generator and upload it directly, that's just lazy. If you use AI generation as A PORTION OF a composite image (like an AI generated background), it has to be convincingly realistic./r/StableDiffusion, /r/AIArt
Social Media Screenshots or Text-Focused ImagesWe're looking for photographs or photo-realistic artistic content here./r/CursedComments
Non-Photorealistic Artistic ContentWe're sure your artwork is really awesome, but we're looking for real-life imagery here.r/ImaginaryHorrors, /r/CreepyArt, /r/BadVibes
Clearly Altered ImagesAvoid obviously photoshopped, digitally manipulated, or 'deep fried' images. However, convincing, realistic photoshops or digitally rendered images are allowed. If the commenters begin pointing out how obvious the photoshop is, we'll retroactively remove it.Same as above
Injury / Gore Focused ImagesAvoid images solely focused on injuries or gore. If these elements are part of the image but not the main focus, they're acceptable./r/MorbidReality, /r/BadlyInjured, /r/ExamineDeath
Porn or Fetish MaterialThis isn't a dumping ground for sexual content. What you do in your free time isn't any of our business.lmao you are on your own
Meta postsUnless you'd like to take a really large stance on the subreddit's current standing, please instead use this post or appropriate news posts for discussion about the subreddit....

Rule 2) Submissions must be properly formatted

> Upload your images directly to Reddit:

We've found that images that aren't uploaded directly to Reddit often don't show up in subreddit subscribers' feeds. Alongside this, people who do find links on a page like this often don't like to click on them. Therefore, we would prefer that you only upload your images directly to Reddit (however Imgur is whitelisted, just in case you aren't able to upload directly to Reddit.)

> Formatting your titles:

The titles of cursed images should be short and simple, and should always begin with "cursed_". The titles of cursed images traditionally aim to replicate the format of a digital file that has been plucked off of a shady website, hard drive, private message, anything like that. Titles shouldn't just be about how you found the image, a full explanation of the contents of the image, or your personal remarks about the image (such as saying "wtf is this" in your title)

  • A good title would be "cursed_unsettling gentleman", since it begins with "cursed_", and it's simple.
  • A bad title would be "who airdropped me this photo", since it doesn't begin with "cursed_", the title is lengthy and provides undesired context, and suggests the image may be a joke.
  • A GREAT, traditional title would be "cursed_creature_of_dread", since it begins with "cursed_", provides a small glimpse into the contents of the image, and replicates a digital file format by replacing empty space with underscores.

> Formatting your posts:

For starters, your submissions should always be IMAGES. No videos, image compilations, or textposts.

A "video" is considered any method of animated content: a digital recording, digital or hand drawn animations, and other motion-picture mediums, and should instead be shared on /r/cursedvideos. GIFs are counted as videos. Still-images formatted as GIFs will still be removed by the bot, so consider converting them to a png, jpg or other image format. If it's a collection / collage of different images, consider splitting them up into individual posts; if one image isn't cursed, we reject the whole thing. Images focusing on text aren't permitted since they're considered to be low-effort, and if you read the previous rule, you'll know where to go instead.

As for the content of your image: We understand that downloading or screencapping pictures from other sources is an incredibly efficient way to distribute a cursed images. But, do everybody a favor, and try to crop your images! We don't want to see your battery percentage, image watermarks, or comments left below/beside an image you've found. Your device should have built-in tools to handle this.

Rule 3) Do not violate Reddit's Content Policy

Posting images or comments that violate the Content Policy can get you banned from the subreddit, temporarily or permanently, or can get your account suspended or banned from all of Reddit. If we don't enforce this rule, the subreddit could become quarantined, or worse, banned... again.

To be kept brief, don't engage in or encourage:

  • Harassment (sexism, racism, or sexualism)
  • Child or animal abuse (violent, negligent, sexual, etc.)
  • Promoting violence (i.e; rallying people to go hurt others, not pictures of a violent act)
  • Images containing the death of a person (a picture of genuine skeleton or a body prepared for burial is fine. A picture of someone who just died is not.)
  • Tag your NSFW posts (Gore and nudity, mostly.)

Rule 4) Avoid well-known or frequent reposts

Reposts are not permitted if they fall into any of the following categories:

  • The image has been posted here in the past 3 months
  • The image can be found in the newest 200 posts
  • The image is already in the top 100 posts of all time
  • The image is already in the top 50 posts of the year

It's okay if you miss if an image was previously submitted! No average viewer is expected to know every image that has ever been submitted here.

Don't like the rules?

  • Let us know! We've tried to keep with the original rules this subreddit had when I (Vertex) acquired it, but I'm open to reasonable suggestions.

  • Check out one of the alternative subreddits above, and see if the types of posts you'd like to make better align with them.

  • Consider posting on /r/cursed_images (it has an underscore) since they don't have nearly as strict of rules.

  • Or, /r/cursedimagesanarchy used to be a popular spot until it was locked. If you have initiative, maybe see if you can take it over?
