I think it was on blogspot. Seems to be gone now, but it had some amazing articles, one of which I would love to read again as I am visiting colombia for the first time next year. It argued, rather convincingly, that the origins of soundsytem culture came originally from Colombia and not Jamaica. Had some amazing pics of the old picos, with names like 'Rambo system' and 'T-Rex system'.
Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hello,
I’m currently learning cumbia but I’m seeing different styles danced at parties. And I’d like to know what the different styles are.
I’m learning something like this style right now : https://youtube.com/shorts/HQdrQZSM6YE?si=grDfmUXk7tbSmIgC
But at Mexican parties especially I see this style : https://youtube.com/shorts/zH4CyjVjPEw?si=sBCh_mJt66zCml8g
Is there a name for these two types?
Looking to get together for a special project. I like the grupo frontera vibes and I feel like singing Spanglish would give it a real good vibe.
I already do reggaeton in English would be cool to translate my song writing to some cumbia beats Of course if no catch I’ll figure this out
Cumbia was born in the funeral ceremonies of Pocabuy, where the Chimillas Indians danced around the coffin when one of their hierarchs died, in the opposite direction to the clock hands, which for them signified a journey with no return.
The Pocabuy are mentioned in various recordings, perhaps most famously in the chorus of the song, "Cumbia de la Paz," by Chico Cervantes:
"Sublime ritual of the Pocabuy, in the cumbia wheel, they said goodbye to the brave warriors that died there, that died there, in the peace of the cumbia..."
Hello good people. I’m Salvadoran american and grew up playing a lot of alt rock and emo music but over the past years I’ve been in touch with my Hispanic side and listening to Cumbia. I would love to mix my ability to play alternative rock(emo and some punk) with cumbia. I play electric, acoustic, and classical guitar. I have a friend who is willing to try drums.
Are there any bands that currently fuse these two styles of music?
Doombia is a genre-defying group known for merging doom metal with psychedelic cumbia. Since settling on a lineup in 2023, the sound has grown to incorporate elements of post-punk, grunge, reggaeton, timba, and salsa, as well as other Latin influenced rhythms. Based in Portland, Oregon, the BIPOC-led, gender queer band's innovative sound and inclusive approach have garnered attention in both the doom metal and Latin alternative scenes.
Doombia was the only band featured in Willamette Week’s Best of Portland 2024 issue, with the weekly (Portland’s largest, by circulation) commenting on the group’s unique, “headbanging, hip-shaking blend” of music genres.
