Jules and Jim-My perspective on Catherine

I don't think it's right to JUST call her a "slutty bitch." She definitely treated the title characters like shit and a lot of her actions are unjustifiable. However I think she does care about them in some way and more importantly, she's lost. She doesn't know what her life is about and why she's here, that's probably why she turns to sex, as it makes her feel powerful and when that dries up, she kills herself. Yes, she could've done things that were less destructive and could've taken the men's feelings into perspective, but she didn't do them to hurt Jules and Jim, she did them to make herself feel wanted and special. What do you think?

P.S. I adored this film

downgrade cover imo

The lean towards “sleek” and simple cover art is killing the vibes of certain movies & I hate it

Where's Greta's closet video?

I seem to recall criterion teased a Greta Gerwig closet video but i dont think they released it. Any word on when it might come out?

Maybe they looked down on her city slickers 2 plug.

What Have We Watched Lately?

Hey, what happened to the "What Have We Watched Lately?" Section Bar? Was there a vote to delete it while I was sleeping?

(also, for all these many years I'd missed seeing the cult classic Showgirls (1995 P. Verhoeven) until last night; It's neither as bad nor as good as I'd heard, but it is kinda funny in a quirky and ironic way.)

La Haine, Days of Heaven, or Fallen Angels?

Watching one tonight.. what should it be? They’re all new to me, huge fan of Malick’s brooding space, Wong’s frenetic intense camerawork, and always love a stylish intense auteur debut.. what do we think?

Appreciate any suggestions!

The big blue by Luc Besson

Your opinion on this movie and are there people like me who think this should have a criterion release?

Wind (1992) Suggestion

I've submitted my suggestion for this film to Criterion and would like to post here to see if anyone else has similar interest. If so, it would definitely be cool of you to submit a suggestion as well. I'll summarize my suggestion email here:

I wish to suggest the inclusion of the 1992 film "Wind" to the Criterion Collection. Directed by Carroll Ballard and produced by Francis Ford Coppola, Wind is a captivating look into the world of competitive sailboat racing, set against the backdrop of the 1983 and 1987 America's Cup. Thanks in large part to cinematographer John Toll, Wind delivers one of the most exhilarating and realistic depictions of sailboat racing ever put to film, shot on location in Newport and Perth, and features many of the sailboats that participated in the actual races. The film has a stellar cast, featuring Matthew Modine (Full Metal Jacket, Stranger Things), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), and Stellan Skarsgård. Wind could also offer the potential to offer excellent bonus content, including history and background of the America's Cup. Criterion is well known for its aim to reflect a broad range of subject matter and Wind offers a unique glimpse into the cultural and sporting milieu of the time. The film's current Blu-ray release, done by Sony Pictures, is rather lackluster and contains almost no special features. A remaster from Criterion could certainly give this film the care and attention to detail it deserves. I believe the film's artistic merits and contribution to the sports drama genre align with the Criterion Collection's mission to celebrate and preserve noteworthy films and would introduce this remarkable film to a broader audience.

P.S. I'm no good at photoshop so I haven't tried to make a custom poster but if anyone makes one I'd love to see it.

What movies are like Nightcrawler and 10 Cloverfield lane in terms of acting and intensity?

I'm looking for movies where the acting is next level and the story is so intense and eerie you can't look away for one second and every word matters. Specially like 10 Cloverfield lane where you're not sure what to believe, John Goodman really knocked it out of the park. Kind of like Coherence and Red state or Prisoners but with a little more.

Is a 4K release of Rififi in the works?

I've been slowly upgrading the DVDs in my collection-- most recently Le Cercle Rouge.

(Other candidates include Le Samourai and Rules of the Game, but LCR was cheaper )

Will a Kurosawa boxset ever be released?

I've been holding back on picking up some of the Kurosawa Criterions, because I've been hopeful for a Fellini or Bergman type boxset being released soon..should I continue waiting or just forget it and get the Kurosawa Criterions that are already available?

Vudu criterion sale

Ive been buying 5$ vudu movies for quite some time now. And I always wondered why they never had criterions on sale.

A few weeks ago they finally started!

Granted most are only 10$ sales but a few have been 5$. I grabbed ingmar bergmans shame for 5$

Seventh seal and dream were 10$.

Does anyone know why they never had sales in the past before?

And why most directors collection arent there?

Filmmakers/actors and such with Letterboxd profiles?

Screenwriters, cinematographers, etc. as well, just anyone involved in film. I follow a few directors/actors (Sean Baker, Mike Flanagan, Barbara Crampton, and Alex Winter) and it's super cool to watch a film and see their thoughts afterwards. I know this has been posted before, but the most recent one I've found was from four years ago.

Roma [2018]

Just got done watching it, damn!!

What a film, loved it....but man o man that dolby atmos is 😮😯😮

This is only a bluray and puts 4k dolby atmos to shame, the entire film just sounds impressive, you feel like you are in it, the birds, the dogs, the cars, the radio, the background characters, the wind, every little detail can be heard.

The film is great, but the sound quality definitely left me impressed and ive now realized THIS is what dolby atmos is all about, and not just "highlighted" during 1 chase scene from a "demo" worthy movie.

The ENTIRE freaking movie is dolby atmos!

Going through some stuff

Long story short, my dad is in the hospital after being perfectly fine this past weekend. The last 24 hours have been very anxious, as we don’t have any answers or plan right now while the doctors run tests.

So now I’m trying to wind down. I usually turn on a movie on Criterion or TCM before I go to bed. Tonight I wanted to be distracted from everything that’s been going on, and saw Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf. Perfect.

It’s so strange that such a dreadful, negative movie is making me so grateful for my two wonderful parents.

What is your favorite Albert Brooks directed movie?

With Criterion announcing their August slate containing two Albert Brooks movies, which one of Albert Brooks' directorial efforts do you like the most?

Your choices:

  • Real Life (1979): A film crew sets out to record a year in the life of an average family, but things quickly start going wrong.
  • Modern Romance (1981): Albert Brooks directs himself as a successful film editor with far too many issues that affects the relationship between him and his remarkably patient girlfriend.
  • Lost in America (1985): A husband and wife in their 30s decide to quit their jobs, live as free spirits and cruise America in a Winnebago.
  • Defending Your Life (1991): In an afterlife way-station resembling a major city, the lives of the recently deceased are examined in a court-like setting.
  • Mother (1996): A neurotic, twice-divorced sci-fi writer moves back in with his mother to solve his personal problems.
  • The Muse (1999): With his career on the skids, a Hollywood screenwriter enlists the aid of a modern-day muse, who proves to test his patience.
  • Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World (2005): To improve its relations with Muslim countries, the United States government sends comedian Albert Brooks to south Asia to write a report on what makes followers of Islam laugh.

Yi Yi is a miracle of a film

Got the blu-ray recently and I’m simply in awe. The way Edward Yang is able to explore so many aspects of life with this simple middle-class Taiwanese family is singular. Every major character is filled with so much depth and even supporting ones like Min-Min’s brother offer nuance and depth.

Three hours and not a single moment wasted. Feelings of middle-age anxiety, young love, death, childhood curiosity, and regret yet every theme is treated with the utmost care. This very well might become my favourite movie. Complete masterpiece if there ever was one.

Side note but Mr Ota and Yang-Yang have got to be two of the most wholesome characters ever put to film.
