The Criterion Collection is a continuing series of important classic and contemporary films.
Here we discuss news, rumors and films of the Criterion Collection, including the Eclipse and Essential Art House series.
The Criterion "Collection" is a company with over 900+ amazing films. On every 15th of the month, a handful of newly restored titles are added to the collection with custom cover art and exclusive supplements.
For every new title added to the collection, a new spine number is granted. Films that are already in the collection in DVD are routinely considered for Blu-ray upgrades, which also provide revamped artwork and supplements.
We understand how overwhelming a company with so many titles can be! Explore Criterion's celebrity top 10 lists and lists of themes to find a starting point that interests you!

I love a good wintery, dark european movie where everyones just cave in with snow. Episode 3 of Dekalog really scratched that itch for me and I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for other movies that do the same.

All are 4k except Bull Durham. I posted F&L before but it was my blu-ray version…one step closer to all of the Gilliam greats in 4k
This is such a great release. I thought I'd have a good casual evening stroll down noir lane, and I ended up with a full on cinematic, culturally important experience. Great everything, chef's kiss. What I'm tripping out on the most is these supplements though. I've only watched around 30 films from the collection so far, and the extras are usually pretty weak sauce, especially by comparison. This is like Arrow level. I give it two out of two hang-tens🤙🤙
How’d I do?
My mother is not a big fan of screwball comedies but, since I love them, she watches some with me.
And, after watching Double Indemnity, she wanted to watch a movie where Barbara Stanwyck is a brunette (she didn't love her in blonde).
Maybe I'll try to show her Ball of Fire next. We'll see.
I watched basically every Wim Wenders film and they are all very slow but highky emotional. I know Tarkovsky also did thus fantastically
Justine Triet's Oscar-winning drama is one of the 2020's best films, a tale of truth vs. fiction and what happens when it becomes impossible to find the objective reality of a situation. Sandra Huller's performance is riddled with raw emotion, with the courtroom scene being the pinnacle of pain and damage. I'm so glad it got a Criterion Collection release.
I mean his cinematic heirs. I suppose one possible answer could be Jafar Panahi. Can you think of any other filmmakers? They don’t necessarily have to be from Iran. They can be from any country.
Looking forward to your thoughts!
Says the sale ends 12/2, does that mean today is the last day or tomorrow?
Had a closet that was a waste of space and after November I needed more space. So I lost the door, gave it a new coat of paint and added in some shelves. I don’t think Willem Defoe will be over anytime soon but I’m happy with it!
I might get a couple myself. What would you pick? My list is, Fists in The Pocket, Freaks, Dr. Strangelove, Woman In The Dunes, The Grand Illusion, The Elephant Man, Come and See, The Wages of Fear, Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, Onibaba, Breathless, The Last Picture Show, M, Targets, and If...
Also open to suggestions.
So I have tons of 4k discs and never have issues with them. But for some reason with criterion 4ks I routinely run into playback issues with certain titles. Ok to be fair most have been fine… but Princess Bride, Trainspotting and Long Good Friday all have the same issue. Between the 30 and 40 minute mark it’ll freeze and get all blocky. Eventually it’ll skip ahead and run ok. I know they sent a fixed disc for Princess Bride and it did fine but has anyone else had these issues.
Catch ya later!
I would love ed wood to be in the criterion, its a great movie about movies and it’d be great if they could upgrade it to 4k
I am constantly surprised by the amount of people who blind buy. More specifically, I am shocked by the amount of poor unfortunate souls who blind buy Happiness, in particular. Watching these poor folks running, smiling, headlong into the depravity has always made me wonder, is there a criterion exchange? A system in which fans of the collection who have blind bought a movie they ended up not liking who would want to exchange it with another person in the same boat. Just a thought.
Also, I have seen Happiness. Great film. Amazing performances. Wonderful direction. I wouldn’t blindly put it on anyone!
I’m not asking to try to be negative, i actually just haven’t seen any I didn’t like yet. In fairness, there are many I am yet to see, but all of those I have (that I can recall off hand anyway) I have enjoyed and found interesting.
My first was Videodrome, and that was a great start for me. I think my second was Seven Samurai, which pretty much cemented my appreciation and interest in the collection.
My only vote would be Sam Peckinpah although I’m very sure there are many, many more.
To add some context to my selection, I think that a lot of his work was just controversial enough to ward people away, and not controversial enough to bring people in either. Combine that with the fact that he never really build a solid audience in America, and that his substance abuse lead to an extreme decline in the quality of his work means he never had a solid following to keep up his legacy.
Yasujiro Ozu made his masterpiece with this humanist story of generational divide and conflicts, as through passivity the characters do their best to hold back from conveying their true thoughts and feelings. A trip to visit their adult children sees Shukichi and Tomi reflect on time, life, death, and the modernity of postwar Japan. The film avoids cheap emotional beats in order to allow the story to breathe, making way for scenes and moments that naturally pull at your heart strings. The biggest takeaway is that familial dynamics are complex, and that even when one tries to stay connected time makes it harder to do so.
