Bivouac trekking corsica

My GF and me are planning to walk the mare-to-mare trail next week in 5-7 days. In our trips, we normally put up our tent in a shielded place at sunset and break off at sunrise. I understand corsica is quite strict on wild camping with campers or rooftop tents, but is bivouacing at night in the mountains also this strictly regulated?

Of course we apply the "leave nothing but your footsteps" policy strictly.

GR20 South Fitness level and exploring the island

Hi, I was planning to do GR20 section from Vizzavona to Conco. Knowing that this is a difficult hike. I can't really understand what fitness level is required for this hike. From some sites I've read that this is tough but, I can't really gauge the level of fitness required from that FYI, I am a very active individual. I have done longer hikes before but nothing like this one. Please share your personal experiences so that I get a good idea and a few suggestions on how to explore the island apart from hiking.

Though, I am planning this hike on a short notice, I am not entirely sure if I will be able to plan 5-6 day hike like this one. But, if there are some hikes doable withing 1-2 days, do share! That way, I can combine hiking and island exploration.

Thanks!

Restaurant and beach suggestions.

Hi everyone, I'm searching for suggestions about restaurants and beaches around August? Not to crowded and kids friendly. Also, is the trip to Cavalo easy going, sea wise? Because of the kids.

Thanks.

Itinerary - Driving Times

Hey guys

My family and I are spending 4 nights in Corsica (my wife and 2 year old) arriving into Figari and leaving out of Bastia. Because i am not on the island for long i am thinking oof basically picking one base... was thinking Calvi because its apparently a great all rounded base and also good for childeren as we are interested in the beautiful beaches.

My questions are,

  1. DO you agree calvi is a good base?
  2. What is the drive like from Figari to Calvi? im thinking on the way will stop past porto vecchio to see some of the beaches and the travel up? how long would this trip take? and is it a straight forward road?
  3. or do i potentially stop for a night on the way to calvi? and where would you suggest?
  4. what is the drive like from calvi to bastia airport?

Thanks so much guys

Suggestion for 3 nights in Corsica in August with a 2 years old

Salut!

Can I take a rental car (from Italy) on the ferry to Corsica (Livorno - Bastia)?

Hello,

I am planning a trip to Corsica in May and the ferry tickets with a car for three people is cheaper than flight tickets from Rome to Ajaccio.

My question: how can I find out if there are restrictions to taking a rental car on the ferry?

For example:

  1. When booking the ferry tickets, it asks for the make and model of the car. But I wouldn't know it until a couple of days before.
  2. Given the rental car is from Milan/ Italy and Corsica is in France, could the rental car company have restrictions?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Can I get off in Nice, if I buy a ferry to Savona (via Nice)?

I am travelling without a vehicle, will they stop me if I try to get off the ferry in Nice?

It is so much cheaper to buy the ferry to Savona via Nice than the same ferry to Nice only.

Where to buy beach gear?

We will spend much of June in Corsica, based in Calvi and will have a car. At what store can we buy small beach chairs, towels or mats, and a picnic cooler?

Thank you!

Day trip or overnight for Bavella needles from Porto Vecchio?

Hi everyone, I'll be traveling to Corsica for a week in August and focusing on the south to keep the itinerary manageable. Plan is to split time between Bonifacio and Porto Vecchio, including some days just relaxing on beaches and a day trip to Lavezzi islands. I'm keen to see the Aiguilles de Bavella, specifically the route from Porto Vecchio which has stops at l'Ospedale lake, Zonza, the Bavella needles pass and then down to Solenzara. Ideally, it would be a leisurely drive that allows some short hiking trails and a lunch stop vs. just rushing through the drive to get back to Porto Vecchio before it gets dark.

Do you think this is doable as a day trip from Porto Vecchio or likely means an overnight stay in the mountains? If it should be an overnight stay, where should we base ourselves? We will likely go straight from there to fly out of Figari airport. Thank you in advance!

Cruise stop - better to bar crawl or beach?

We are stopping in Ajaccio for a day. We will walk in the morning to see the historic sites but are wondering if our afternoon is best spent on a beach or touring the many wine bars/pubs. Any recommendations?

How close do you feel to Italy?

  • I know this might be one of the many instances where you get asked this question, and that this might seem tiring, but leaving politics aside, culturally do you feel any cultural connections to Italy? Of course I am not talking about distant Italian territories, like Veneto or Puglia, Italy is pretty diverse and multiethnic/multicultural, I am talking about close Italian territories like Sardegna when it comes to your South or Toscana and Liguria when it comes to your North.

• Another thing, as we know it today Italy is more like different entities put together and governed by Turin (Savoia monarchs) first, then Firenze and now Rome, in the case of a federal "Italia", where regions/territories have autonomy and same importance, would making part of it (obviously unlikely because "La France" has benefits in owning Corsica) as an autonomous "state" make sense to you?

• After all Corsica is Italian at least geographically, and even Napoleone Bonaparte himself said it, he actually was also pretty aware of his Italic origins/culture. Even the French region that you might have more similarities with (Nizza) is (not coincidentally) a territory that culturally and geographically was more linked with those to their East rather than those to their West.

• I mean I know that the French (or should I say the Parisians rule, especially De Gaulle probably and his idea of "grandeur") managed in convincing some of you into thinking that you don't have anything to do with the peninsula that's located 90 km to the East (or 30 km from Capraia, 50 km from Elba) but do you genuinely feel any connection?

• Does this speech of Pasquale Paoli make you relate?

"Simu Corsi per nascita e sentimenti, ma prima di tutto ci sentiamo italiani per lingua, costumi e tradizioni... E l'italiani tutti sò fratelli e solidali davant'a Storia e davant'a Dio... Cume Còrsi 'un vulemu esse nè servi nè "ribelli" e cume italiani avemu i dirittu di trattà d'uguale a uguale cun l'altri italiani... O 'un saremu nulla... O vinceremu cun l'onure o succumberemu l'armi in manu... A nostra guerra di liberazione è santa e ghiusta, cume santu e ghiustu è u nome di Dio, e qui, in li nostri monti, spunterà per l'Italia u sole di a libertà."

• Or this by Napoleone himself when he was still young?

«Francesi, non paghi di averci portato via tutto ciò che ci era caro, avete anche corrotto i nostri costumi. La situazione attuale della mia patria, e l'impossibilità di mutarla, sono dunque un nuovo motivo per fuggire una terra in cui sono obbligato per dovere, a lodare uomini che per virtù dovrei invece odiare. Quando arriverò nella mia terra, che atteggiamento adottare, che linguaggio tenere? Quando la patria non è più, un buon patriota deve morire.»

• Or this still by Napoleone but much later when he was imprisoned in St. Helena?

Also, i'm not sure what to pack and bring - any advice ?

How easy is it to go to (1) Italy (2) Nice (3) Sardinia ? Any other places i can visit ?

Additional tips are appreciated too !

Holiday 19-26 August as a couple in Corsica: itinerary assistance? :)

Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I were thinking of spending our summer holidays in Corsica this year, 7 days max. We would come by ship from Italy with our car. We are more prone to a wild (and possibly less expensive) trip, we don't love very much crowded spaces. We are very open to itinerary suggestions, so feel free to share your experience :) thanks!

From Corte to Bonifacio

A while ago I asked a question about going to Corsica without a car, and now we have our flight booked! We won't have a car because of the prices and mountainroads. We plan on staying in Corte for a few days after taking the train from Bastia. After that, we plan on going to Bonifacio where we will take the boat the next day to Sardinia. What is the best way to travel from Corte to Bonifacio?

3 nights Corsica (Porto Vecchio), 4 nights Sardinia (Costa Smeralda) - Good idea?

My partner and I are planning a trip to Corsica and Sardinia. We plan to take the ferry from Corsica (after 3 nights) to Northern Sardinia (staying for 4 nights).

Has anyone done Corsica to Sardinia? Are the islands too similar to spend 7 nights in both?

I am learning given the short time in Corsica, it is best to stay put in the Southern region. We booked a hotel ~ 20 minutes near Porto Vecchio (Sulia House). How would you recommend we spend our 3 days in Corsica? We enjoy the beach but also enjoy activity (hiking, wine, cities).

Rental Cars

Hello, My gf and I will be visiting Corsica for 14 days. The first two days we won't need a rental car but for the remaining 12 days we will. Is it cheaper to pick up a car for 14 days at the airport or to rent a car in the town of Bastia for 12 days ?

As we heard rental cars are rather expansive here we wonder what would be better. And how would you book ? At a counter at the airport or via an app ? Thanks !

Experienced freediver & underwater photographer looking dive buddy or dive insights (open to paying or giving free photoshoot!)

I will be visiting Corsica May 21-25 and am an experienced freediver, world record holding spearfisherman & underwater photographer that would like to do a bit of casual shore diving during my stay.

I will have a car and intend to do a lot of driving, so location is flexible. I would be open to harvesting octopus or fish within regulations, but also open to simply observe marine life. I would like to avoid touristy dive shops that cater to inexperienced snorkelers &/or scuba.

I would appreciate any guidance or introductions, feel free to send me a direct message if you don't want information made public. I will keep any location information confidential. Thank you!

Bonjour Corsicans! Stay in Bonifacio or Porto Vecchio?

Hello locals. Would you rather stay here in Bonifacio or here near Porto Vecchio, or here in Porto Vecchio, for a week?

American couple, we will have rental car. We are interested in historical tours, some hiking, some beaches, and walking around interesting towns. And eating. Any other suggestions welcome!

How is Napoleon's name pronounced in Corsican?

I've seen the Corsican version of his name written as Napulione Buonaparte and also Nabulionu Bonaparte (with a b instead of a p). I would love to hear it as it should be spoken. Is there anyone here who can direct me to a a recording/video of an authentic Corsican saying his name?

Thank you!

Is there a nickname for Corsicans?

So in the 1940s and the 1950s Germans were called "Jerries" from British and Japanese called "Japs". I wonder if there is any nickname for Corsicans like that? Also i would also like to know if there are any special names for special things that only local Corsicans might know of... Like "We call those guys living in France "that" or we call French people "this" or we call these guys "blah blah"" or something like that. Thanks.

Do Corsicans take jokes about their culture well?

Jokes in good faith by outsiders, to be clear.

And, do they laugh at their own culture amongst one another?

Any insight about this would be greatly appreciated, from Corsicans and also people who have visited. Thank you.
