The subreddit dedicated to the American metal band Converge

ABOUT

Converge is an American metal band formed by vocalist Jacob Bannon and guitarist Kurt Ballou in Massachusetts in 1990. During the recording of their seminal fourth album Jane Doe, the group became a four-piece with the departure of guitarist Aaron Dalbec and the addition of bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller. The band's style blends hardcore punk with heavy metal and they are considered pioneers of both metalcore and its subgenre mathcore.

Nothing hits like Converge

I’m going through an extremely difficult time in my life right now and music has always been something that helps me. I love all sub genres of metal, and am always seeking out the heaviest, filthiest music I can find. I’ve been consistently listening to metal for 15 years, so I’ve heard a hell of a lot of it.

I have noticed that there’s basically no other band I’ve found that scratches the itch like Converge. There’s something indescribable about their music. It’s therapeutic for me. No other band’s music really makes me feel like this. The pain and emotion that is poured into their music is unmatched.

I love me some pummeling music like Wormrot, Antichrist Siege Machine, and Nails. I feel like Converge has that pummeling aspect, but they also have unmatched emotion and it’s addicting. I’m very thankful for this band right now. They’re helping me with the hardest and loneliest chapter of my life by a mile

WE ARE CONVERGE!!!

Quick question here. Was anyone here at the show they played here in Austin, TX in 2022? I was NOT. I only got into them this past year and am obsessed with them and Bannon. I saw this video of the unnanounced FREE show they played after playing at The Mohawk on red river street. I sent him an email about 4 months ago asking about a possible interview through his art website email but have not gotten a response. If anyone here LOVES Converge and wants to get a hardcore band started I am all for it.

Chaotic Hardcore/Mathcore - is here any difference

Dude, I had this epic argument with my friend the other day about Converge and what genre they belong to. I'm not really into genre labels myself (they're all pretty pointless, anyway), but this one thing my friend said really got me thinking. He was like, "Converge is obviously chaotic hardcore, not metalcore or mathcore." And I'm like, "Hold up, Converge is totally metalcore. And trying to figure out the exact proportions of one genre in their music is just dumb." And then I said, "Plus, chaotic hardcore and mathcore are basically the same thing. They're just different words for the same kind of music."

My friend agreed with me about the metalcore thing, but he still insisted that chaotic hardcore and mathcore are totally different genres. He said they have different sounds and come from different places. I was like, "Dude, both chaotic hardcore and mathcore are subgenres of hardcore punk. And they both have all these crazy musical elements, like weird time signatures, polyrhythms, and stuff. And even the same bands are considered legends in both genres. So, like, what's the difference?"

I tried to prove my point by asking ChatGPT to name some bands that are considered hardcore but not mathcore. But the AI just crashed on that question. So, we went to a subreddit about music genres, and people were posting stuff that basically agreed with me. Even Wikipedia says that mathcore was originally called chaotic hardcore.

So, here's my question: Do you have any arguments against what I'm saying? And if chaotic hardcore and mathcore are so similar, why do we even need two different genres for them?

Which versions of Petitioning The empty sky do you prefer?

The original 96-97 mix? Or the 2005 remaster from equal vision?

I love this fucking band

I just recently got into Converge. While admitettly I'm not the biggest metalhead (I love Slipknot and Linkin Park and that's as far as I will go), there's something about this band that captivates me to no end.

I've listened to Jane Doe for the first time last year and I thought the album was absolutely nuts. It slowly grew to me, due to Jacob's deranged and pained vocals. I have no idea what he's screaming but it helps me release all the negative emotions in me.

Shortly after I listened to AWLWLB, Axe To Fall, No Heroes, all of which I absolutely loved. Again, I've never been a huge metal fan, (especially in these last few years), and met alone a metalcore fan, but something about this band clicked with me instantly.

One of the songs that hits the hardest to me is AWLWLB, the title track, because of how emotional the lyrics and vocals are. It hit me even harder when I found out the song was dedicated to Jacob's late dog, and I could definitely relate a lot more after that.

So, that's pretty much my post lol. I love Converge

Entombed - Chaos Breed X The Saddest Day

So I had the above mentioned Entombed song on today and the bridge / breakdown section in the middle reminded me immensely of The Saddest Day when it descends into that unhinged breakdown (2 minute mark.)

The melodies and speed are different but it has that same energy to my ears. Is anybody familiar with that track? Am I stupid or can anybody else hear a resemblance?

Show in Bogota 04/23

I had bought a ticket for my wife thinking it'd be entertaining to take her to her first (and probably only) hardcore show, but after watching videos on youtube she's adamant that she doesn't want to go lol.

So anyways, I've got an extra ticket to see Converge in Bogota, Colombia on April 23. I'd be happy to give it away in exchange for a beer or two the night of show.

Trying to get a autograph.

Converge will be touring in Latin America, and for the first time, finally coming to Brazil.

I really wish trying to get my Jane Doe copy signed by the band... They are cool about it?

Any ever catch that The Saddest Day references/interpolates parts of a Red House Painters song?

Edit: *anyone, I should start proofreading my posts lol

So, The Saddest Day (1996) contains these lines:

"How we get older / How we forget about each other"

as well as

"And we won’t be breathing / In that same sun again / None of this will ever / Surface again".

These passages sounded familiar to me so I went digging, and I realised that these lines are almost definitely referencing/borrowing from the Red House Painters song Things Mean a Lot (1993):

"Scares me how we get older / How we forget about each other"

as well as

"You threaten to make me dead / And none of this will matter or surface again / Scares you to know that we won’t be / Watching the same sun".

Granted, they don't line up exactly, but the similarities are striking. Especially since Kurt has namedropped Red House Painters in an interview before, and Jake is a fan of Mark Kozelek's later work as Sun Kil Moon.

just listened to Jane Doe, what should I listen to next if I liked the more sad/sombre tracks like Heaven in Her Arms and the title track?

Basically the title, looking for more "emotional" songs

ConvergePH

Maraming salamat!

Vocal question!?

Does anyone know if effects are used on the vocals on the albums? I know Jacob has a super unique scream and it’s wicked nasty. I’ve always been curious IF there were effects used what they were? and if anyone knows?

It sounds like something is used on some of the albums…but not sure

Thanks 👍

Kurt Ballou’s ‘You Fail Me’ Guitar Sound

Hey all, just wondering if anyone had any links/info on Kurt’s equipment rig for You Fail Me. I feel that album kind of stands alone in its texture and production, particularly when it comes to guitars, so I just wondered what he was using at the time, amps, pedals etc, compared to now, where he’s using a lot more amp modellers and digital effects units.

Old merch design

Just stumbled across this old photo I took. This was back around 2009/10 (at the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta). I didn’t buy the shirt at the time and I’ve never been able to find it again. I was starting to think I’d imagined it lol. Anybody still have this one (the unicorn)?

New fan here. Why don't they have vinyl available for their most popular record?

Very suprised and disappointed they dont have Jane Doe vinyl. Seems like a huge missed opportunity given the albums legacy and popularity. Anyone know why?
