AITJ for asking to switch parts?

This is for community band, I play percussion, and we just had our 3rd of 4 rehearsals before the concert. (First rehearsal was back on November 12)

Anyway, we’re playing Sleigh Ride and I had bass drum and slapstick. Another percussionist had snare drum and temple blocks. Well he was struggling and I advised him to YouTube the parts (I’m sure a lot of you know about the Sleigh Ride from the (instrument) perspective trend) and anyway it’s been 3 weeks and he’s still struggling so I asked him if he would be cool with switching parts with me. He said sure.

But now I feel bad. True I didn’t offer to meet with him outside of band to work on the part, but I did advise him of looking it up on YouTube.

Soprano Sax feature pieces

Im an alto player but I love playing soprano and I would love some concert band recs that have soprano parts/features. I recently played Perthshire Majesty and just loved it. Any concert band pieces with interesting solos/parts for soprano?

G.O.A.T. of the Narwhals for concert band

I had this crazy idea to write a song about narwhals while playing "Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza" with my family yesterday. This is the song that I came up with. The "C" section is a chance for the band to recreate the sound of narwhals in the ocean.

What is this?

Hey, I’m auditioning for an honor band soon and they sent out the audition thingy but I have no idea what they mean by “rudimental long roll” and can’t find anything when I looked it up. Does anyone know what they mean by this? I know I probably sound so stupid right now 😭

Repertoire Ideas

Looking for some quality rep to play with my freshman group. For some context we have a heavy flute, clarinet, trumpet, and percussion (10 percussionists) section. The low brass section is essentially non-existent. 3 trombone players (2 are new to the instrument), no euphoniums, and 2 tuba players (both new to the instrument). Any suggestions? I’ve been hanging around grade 3 music at the moment.

Help finding new charts to buy

Hello hive mind; I have a concert band comfortably playing Gr 3-4.5 charts (and the occasional Gr 5 challenge piece) wishing to collaborate with local tango, salsa, and swing dancing groups at an upcoming event. We're looking for 10-15 minutes of music in each genre to suit the dancers. Any suggestions of charts we should look at would be much appreciated - we have a short-term offer of funding new charts if we can source them this week.

Tango: we found a nice version of Por Una Cabeza, and other requests from the troupe were Poema (Bianco & Melfi), El Huracan (Juan d'Arienzo) or Gallo Ciego (Pugliese), to give an indication of the style/tempi they like.

Salsa: the group sent the following list, indicative of the tempi and style they want:
Livin' La Vida Loca (Ricky Martin) -- we found a nice arrangement of this in a medley.
Michaela (Sonora Caruseles, Luis Florez)
Mi Mulata (Frankie Negron)
Salsaton-Sals (El Rubio Loco)
Juliana (DLG)
Abre Que Voy (Miguel Enriquez)
Me Libere (El Gran Combo De Puerto Rico)
They also said that the other style they can dance to is Cha-Cha, but less-preferred.

Swing: their leader suggested they could handle any 12-bar Blues format, or 16-bar Jazz standards.

Name of a concert band piece

I remember reading of an obscure concert band piece dedicated to a student who lost their life in a car crash, and there is a section or movement of the piece that is "random" where the band plays whatever they want ig, to depict the morning of the crash. I can't find the title of the piece it may be too obscure..

Personally, what do you do with your medals after you receive them from an honor band, and are not wearing them?

Band just doesn't hit the same anymore

Hey guys, I'm not sure if anyone can relate but for some reason band just doesn't really hit the same anymore. I go to a very small school and I'm the only trumpet player so the band wouldn't really work if I stopped showing up. For 3 years (grade 9-11) band was amazing, i loved every part of it and it was something I was so happy to be a part of. Now I'm in grade 12 and I feel like I don't want to be there anymore, I just feel like it's expected of me to be there. I don't plan on leaving It just isn't the same where every band morning I'd be up and ready in no time, now i show up late every morning. My passion for music is far greater than it ever has been and I plan on studying music after hs but my enjoyment in band has fallen off.

Does anyone have a similar experience or am I just going crazy. I'd love to hear anyone else's experiences.

What could a performance major get me?

I have decided to look into WMU after some replies on my last post, but now I'm wondering what jobs I could get with a performance major, and what happens if I really can't get a job with that. And also what are the salaries for some of the jobs that are possible to get with that major?

Looking for a piece

I came across this video while looking through All-State Bands, and the first piece here caught my attention. I can't find any program listing online. Would anyone know what piece the first one is? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SN8Vc-NBTJk

Good pops arrangements aside from New Sounds in Concert Band.

So, being originally from Japan, and playing a combined mid-high school band, I am familiar with jazz and pops arangements from New Sounds in Concert Band. They are a series of high-quality arrangements of jazz, rock, pop, and movie music originally published by Yamaha, not least because they were actually composed for, and played by, Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra, and often have pop/jazz/rock artists play the solos (and presumably masterclass the music). They are available in Europe (and I think also in the US and Australia) via de Haske.

https://www.rundel.de/en/dehaske_new_sounds_for_concert_band/c-633

Thing is, though, they cost an arm and a leg for my community band in Sydney, Australia, in the form of having them shipped from Japan (if Yamaha) or Europe (if by de Haske) with expensive shipping fees. Plus the waiting time to get delivered. (And in Europe, there's also that the Euro is quite expensive against the dollar.) Of course, I could get a copy sent to my family home and pick that up the next time I visit them, but that also a bit cumbersome.

I'm sure there are also high-quality arrangements through publishers outside of Japan. I've heard a few musical arrangements from Molenaar Edition and they were very much up there in orchestration (but also difficulty) as well. But I'm not familiar with any other. Anyone else got a clue?

Edited to add a couple of details for clarity.

I'm kind of worried for after high-school

I am in my first semester of Grade 10, and ever since Grade 9 Semester 2, I've been really passionate about going to college for music, (I play trombone idk if that helps) and I am wondering what schools would be good for that. (I Live in Ontario and don't want to move SUPER far away) I'm not exactly super into music theory I just like preforming to other people and would like to find a good school that I can look into for after high school. Does anyone have any recommendations for Colleges or Universities that do concert band?

Does anyone remember the name of this piece? Any help?

I cannot remember but I have played it. It has an awesome low brass feature and it goes like this I think. Does anybody know because I would love to listen to this piece again for nostalgia.

A Trumpet Player's Opinion on Other Instruments

Something I made when I was bored. Accurate? Based on several years in different concert bands as a trumpet player. Not meant to be taken seriously.

So I have to share a concert tuba with another student (Different band hours), what is the best way, if any, to mark tuning slides because we have to move them everyday?

Looking for 'light & fun' music to program for the orchestra

Programming classical concert band pieces isn't too difficult. Neither is it too find chorals, opening work or music from movies. All these make a well-rounded concert program, but the one category that we always struggle with, is finding what I call 'light & fun' music. It's the type of music that the percussion section is waiting for the entire concert, where the crowd strats cheering/dancing/clapping and is virtuosic for woodwinds interspersed with wild brass solo's. I find it really tricky to find good music in this category, yet it's really important to finish off a concert with bravo, and keep the brass and percussion satisfied during rehearsals. Some representative examples: 1, 2, 3, 4. We'll play in an outdoor festival.

What are some of your favorite pieces like this? We play around grade 4-6, but feel free to comment for any difficulty.

Community Band Advice?

Hi! I'm a teacher musician (27F) who is apart of a local community band in Florida. I had an exchange with the band member that sits next to me last week and I want to come prepared for this week's rehearsal. She snapped at me for having my phone out 3 minutes before rehearsal started. The conductor was talking about his new microphone, but nothing of note, rehearsal had not officially begun. She first asked, "when rehearsal starts, can you put your phone away?" My response was yes, but after I finish a text. Less than 30 seconds later, "put your phone away, it's very distracting to me". Responding as calmly as I could, said "Yeah, after I finish the text." The exchange freaked me out and also pissed me off, ruining the entire rehearsal for me (external factors were also in play: bad day at work, wasn't feeling good). What would be a good, but tactful response to her should she say something again?

For context: This is the first time I've sat next to her since our part assignments change every concert cycle. I'm also a teacher, I get to work early in the morning so I don't have to stay late. Rehearsal is also an hour away from me, so on rehearsal days, I'm away from home from 7am-10pm. There is nothing in our band handbook that says anything about cellphone use other than "maintaining proper decorum" during rehearsal. I don't miss entrances or notes from the conductor. I'm only on my phone, which is set to Vibrate, in between pieces to text my friends that I haven't had the opportunity to interact with all day. Not scrolling Tiktok/reels. The band is also a majority old, retired people who are probably stuck in their ways.

TYIA!

Who knows any band pieces where the oboe has a solo, or is a crucial part of them?

I'm specifically looking for highschool level pieces (or grade 3 if you know what musical grades are)
