I really really wish they’d go ahead and produce a Girly Men movie with all the cast, just as they are. I know Arnold is an old man now, hell they all are (we all are) but I think that would make it even funnier. Present day Kevin Nealon saying he’ll pump you up! I think a lot of us 90s kids would pay to see that.
I
I'm really hoping Conan connected with the New Zealand comedy scene when he was there - Conan and NZ comedy are my two favorite things! There is no other country in the world with as good a comedy scene as New Zealand, and I'm including the U.S.! All the good comedy in America is being made by people who have been making comedy forever or who are in their 40s now... my fellow American millennials, we have not produced any good comedians (I know - controversial, and there are exceptions, but as a whole, it feels like we're not doing anything really new). But in New Zealand, everything's different. The stand-up scene is bustling and it's mostly people in their 30s and 20s, and some of it is WILD, just look at what David Correos does. Makes Conan look tame! So I'm really really hoping we get some Conan-NZcomedy crossover in Conan O'Brien Must Go next season, it's the perfect match!
We know Taika is involved in that episode, and I hope Jemaine and even Brett are in there somewhere, but for those of you looking to go beyond just Taika and Flight of the Conchords, here are my recommendations:
Everything Jeremy Wells did in the early 2000s, namely, Unauthorised History of New Zealand and Eating Media Lunch.
Taskmaster New Zealand features more well known comics like Karen O'Leary (Wellington Paranormal) and lesser known but genius comics like Bubba. Most of it is on YouTube. Almost all of those contestants have other stuff going on, it's a good jumping off point to find a lot of great stand-up. If you watch any of Taika's shows, you'll recognize half the contestants.
Guy Williams annoys the shit out of me but his show New Zealand Today is really good.
Guy Montgomery's Guy Mont-Spelling Bee is a work of ART! Come for the show, stay for Aaron Chen. Both AUS and NZ versions slap.
Tom Sainsbury (Wellington Paranormal) it's worth looking at his Instagram reels, it's an endless tv show.
DAVID CORREOS - especially for Conan fans. This is the man. Stand-up, short films, TV. You'll find it all on YouTube.
David Fane, been around for ages, legendary from the 90s hit The Semisi Family but now he shows up in random places, and some of Taika's movies and shows.
Melanie Bracewell (also on TMNZ) hosts a "weekly roundup" style show in Aus called The Cheap Seats if you're just looking to get more exposure to the media environment as a whole in that part of the world, it's perfect. She got famous for looking like NZ PM Jacinda Ardern. The show is...ok.
Also check out the documentary Frodo is Great...Who is That!? about Brett from Flight of the Conchords who played an elf in the first LOTR before Flight of the Conchords got known. Fun window into NZ and dripping in the cultural moment of the internet in 2004.
These are recommendations tailored for Conan fans, who we can safely assume share some demented tendencies. I've never been to NZ, I just get high and find all this shit on YouTube and streaming sites. (My NZ fandom is the result of trying to figure out why NZ swung to the left in 2016 when the rest of the Anglosphere swung hard to the right, went deep into NZ politics and history to answer the question and ended up finding all these gems)
Kiwis, please add to the list! And let us know if you've heard any gossip about Conan's visit a few months ago
I know she might not be a fan on account of her living in the 1800s, but she needs to appear on Conan needs a fan.
I’m a senior graduating high school in a few months and I’d love to hear some Conan quote suggestions. The classic one I’m thinking of using is “when all else fails there's always delusion”, but I’m wondering, are there any others that anyone could recommend?
That Paul Rudd is going to run the Mac and Me clip at Conan's Mark Twain ceremony, right?
Flying from Seattle alone to be there! I’m definitely a little anxious traveling alone but this is the perfect reason to get out of my comfort zone. If anyone else is going and wants a friend to hang out with for the before and after events let me know 😅 I’m 30F and pretty dang chill, I get along with everyone, I’m just going to be excited and happy to be there!
Considering all the political BS problems US is having with Canada and Mexico. Now more than ever is needed another Conan without border this time in Canada and Mexico.
I was trying to do laundry. I thought I would put on Conan while folding. But every time I tried, my daughter would cry if she heard him. She ended up on a goofy account for it.
She is fine now, btw. She’s 10 and manages to keep it together when she hears Conan.
I literally just realized CONAF stands for Conan O’Brien needs a friend. For some reason I thought it was like a separate thing that they did that I hadn’t listened to or watched before.
So it dawned on me yesterday at my local vintage arcade/bar that the goons in the Simpsons arcade game look suspiciously similar to a certain former Late Nite host. The game came out in 1991 when he was on staff with The Simpsons but well before the late night show so it's probably nothing, but it made me happy to womp his big fat Irish head.
Full disclosure - I'm a straight male. But Aaron Bleyart is a catch. Here are my reasons why:
He's not afraid of commitment. Bley's been working with Conan right out of college to today. Assuming he graduated college at 22 and knowing he's around 45 now, he's been committed to working at the same job for over 23 years. #committed
He is loved by his mother. Evidence? His mom bought him a Rolex for his 40th birthday. And the fact that his mother loves him must mean he's good to his mother. Men who treat their mother right treat their partners right as well. #mommasboy
He's great at taking a joke. No matter what Conan throws at him (paper balls, jokes, comments about his loudness, literal slaps to the back from Conan), he can take it. He's got tough skin. #notapussy
He's a gamer. Enough said. I could listen to this grey-haired fox talk about video games all day. And you know what they say about gamers and their hands right? #goodwiththeirhands
He's not materialistic. Despite him having a Rolex, he usually wears kooky watches, Macy's suits (when asked to wear a suit), and simple clothes like t-shirts and jeans.
He's a tall drink of water. Ever see him standing next to Conan? We know Conan's 6'4, so Bley must be around 6'2-6'3. Big man. He could pick me up anytime. #bighands
How is this man still single?!
Just recently watched sugar and spice (2001) with all the conan references. i know he's brought up being mentioned in crazy stupid love before but was curious if anyone has knowledge of him addressing this movie? lol. would be funny cause his thing about crazy stupid love was why did they consider him a hall pass but this one definitely goes past that...
