Especially for a stem major and what would be good for admission to med schools? What’s considered competitive enough
I’m wondering where to file complaint about a professor. They misinformed me about class policies and took away an extension they gave me which I had in writing which severely messed up my grade. I had it due to documented health issues. Who I can go to who has more authority over this and can help me in this situation? Any advice about navigating this would be highly appreciated
Just wanted to get some boring stuff out the way.
It’s known this school is amazing in terms of finance, tech, prelaw, premed, engineering. Legit amazing across the board in terms of total placement.
But what is the per capita placement for competitive fields like tech, finance, and niche things like quant?
Like does everyone interested in finance (who is willing to work) get a job in finance? I’m just wondering because I do love the school but I don’t want to dig myself into a hole pre-professionally in the case I get accepted as a transfer.
Also, what is the on campus recruiting scene for the aforementioned fields; I know being in nyc could give a big advantage.
thanks in advance
Curious about how they curve the grades, will the mean usually curved to B?
Since we don't have a pickleball club/group here at Columbia, I want to make one! Posting here to see if anyone would join. For now, I am thinking weekly trips to the Riverside Park. They follow an open-play style but the wait time is usually short. I think this is a great way to find playing partners and grow the pickleball community on campus! DM me or leave a comment here if you are interested!
Should I still major in econ? I’d say i didn’t do as much as I should’ve/couldve in the class, but should I major in something else? If something else, what majors are good for finance? Should I try Micro/Macro and see if I do better?
Last year just over one-third of undergrads went into finance or consulting, according to Columbia's Career Education center. That's similar to levels from the prior decade.
But what's the makeup of this roughly one-third share? Here are my hypotheses (not in order). They might all be true to some extent but I'm looking for the ones with the most explanatory power. I'm a visiting student at Columbia (postgrad).
Hypothesis 1: They're super competitive and ambitious. They're attracted to finance/consulting not because they're drawn to the skills or lifestyle but because they want to demonstrate success and there's no better way to do that than getting jobs in the most prestigious industries. (Leaving tech aside.)
Hypothesis 2: They want to make a lot of money. This is distinct from the desire for prestige and signalling success. This could partly be due to anticipating having to repay a lot of student debt.
Hypothesis 3: They're fundamentally lost. They don't know what they want to do and see finance/consulting as bridge careers that allow them to keep their options open for a few more years before they commit to a different path.
Hypothesis 4: They're the smartest and/or have the greatest raw talent. Not as measured by Columbia GPA but rather in terms of high test scores and high school GPA. To entertain this hypothesis, I think it's important to be aware that some kids who are *not* in this group might justify not pursuing finance/consulting by pointing to other factors, such as misalignment with career goals or lack of social good, even if it's not the true reason.
Hypothesis 5: They're free market capitalists. They're drawn to the two industries seen as the purest expressions of capitalism, perhaps thinking they'd be good culture fits.
Hypothesis 6: They're the children of financiers and consultants. People do what they know.
I am a Questbridge scholar accepted to Columbia and required to take the Summer Bridge Program in 2025. I saw a bit about it--but if anyone has anything more on this program or if anyone else will be attending the same as me. I'd love to know!
Hi! I just got accepted into CC via Early Decision and there's no mention of an admission deposit on the portal - am I missing something? If not, could other students who got in via ED please give me a timeline on when I should start expecting payments / accommodation booking / etc?
Also, when submitting the Enrollment Agreement, I accidently signed the date as November 21st 2024 instead of December 21st 2024. I have already emailed the admissions department - is this a big deal or not that important (considering I'm 100% committed to Columbia and don't intend on breaking any terms of that Agreement as it is).
Thanks so much for your help!
PDFs from this year or any past years?
Thank you so much in advance!
Is transferring out from one single to another possible? I wanted to move somewhere like east campus. If anyone wants to trade with me lmk!
I’m a current high school senior applying to colleges for data science. I began researching about undergrad DS in Columbia and noticed that it was in the school of general studies. I’m wondering if this is bad or not?
EDIT: Whoops nvm just realized CC also offers the major
I applied to the MSCS program for Spring 2025 on October 15, and with the spring term starting on January 21, this wait feels unusually long. I’m wondering if campus will be open on Monday December 23, and whether the admissions committee might still be working on decisions that day?
How does being a TA for a class that you did really well in work?
Do you need to email the professor asking to be a TA or is it a position they advertise? And is it only for grads or can undergrads be TAs too?
Thanks!
I think I have some ideas for what I'd like to do since none of the programs look like what I've wanted, but I wanted to hear people's experiences with this process.
How often do they get approved? How much of a fight was it? How did you make your case? Were there any people on campus that were particularly helpful or adversarial?
My academic advisor is Dean Peiffer, so I'm certainly going to get nothing from her (those who've had her would know), and I just want to know if any students have had luck with this before and, if so, how.
Hi, How do I become a TA for Linear Algebra and Probability? This semester has been difficult, but I feel like I’m might get an A or A+ in Linear Alegbra and Probability if I did great on the final exam. I was also a math peer tutor last year, but not this semester unfortunately. Are there any other requirements other than doing great in the specified class and possibly having past tutoring experience? Any GPA requirements? The professor knows my name, and I have gone to some of his office hours to ask questions about the homework and content, when I was not too busy. I’ve also attended most of the classes (only missed 4 because I couldn’t go, and there’s no attendance requirement).
Thanks!
The deadline to submit a claim was December 17. I’m assuming they need some time to approve claims and run the numbers to calculate payout amounts- does anyone know about how long that could take?
Here’s the link to the settlement website for reference. It explains how they will allocate the settlement but doesn’t provide a timeline for when to expect the payouts.
Hi,
Is there anyone here who is studying the MS in Applied Math? Can they share their opinion on the application process and what that was like? I'm a software engineer and come from a CS background, but I'm interested in the program. Would you consider the GRE to be necessary given my background?
I've only taken up to Calc 3 and Linear Algebra during undergrad but am fairly strong in math. Additionally, I have work experience with machine learning and mathematical models.
If there's anyone who has or is currently taken the program with a similar background, I would love to hear about your experience.
Thanks!
About to take this course for next semester and kind of scared for it as I have never really taken any organic chem before. Any advice/tips on how to prepare/study for exams? Does anyone have the syllabus for the course? The professor is Luis campos; how is his grading? If grades are curved, how?
Thanks in advance!!!
I recently got denied and then put on a waitlist within 2 weeks of applying for my Masters in Applied Analytics.
Is this normal LOL?
I turned everything in during priority deadline, I have good stats— and i thought everyone gets accepted?
Should i wait until regular decisions come out (which is usually around March)?
Im interested in majoring in computer science and wanted to evaluate how good Columbia would be for that. Im aware that it has a great program that is really competitive. But my state school which is UT Austin has higher ranking in computer science specifically. Would it be better to stay in state (wayyy lower tuition) or go to Columbia. Are Ivy league benefits worth it in this case. Im drawn to the school for its location being in New York city and also the opportunities. Ik comp sci jobs are impossible to get but would I find more success in a good job post grad in NY or Austin. Columbia is my dream school and has been forever but overall for my career what would be better?
Question in title. Asking for a friend interested in the Statistics Ph.D program, but heard a few things from the grapevine. Word has it that he got offers from (one of, or both) Berkeley and Stanford. Is Blei taking on any more students this year/next?
Any color would be appreciated!
Hi, I'm a masters student going into my third semester. I am having an impossible time trying to find a part-time job trying to fund the expensive NYC live.
I don't have access to Handshake. I asked and they said Handshake is just for undergrad students. I have access to Vmock, but the website is full of very old job listings (lots of them having start dates that have long passed).
I have already applied to the library and then contacted multiple people about on campus jobs (library, gym, post office, cafeteria, coffee shops) and didn't get a single response from anyone.
I don't really know how to apply to be a TA, I can't find the resources online. I have heard that the school prioritizes international students for this position, and since I'm not international, help on that would be fantastic.
My parents won't let me nanny. My parents also don't want me working in person far away from campus. They also don't want me working a food job. (They are helping pay for my rent so I can't really go against their wishes)
I know tutoring is an option, but I will definitely need another job since the few hours and low pay is not enough.
Any help would greatly be appreciated. It feels impossible trying to find someone who wants a non-international masters student, as well as a job that my parents would let me work.
Anyone knows how he will curve our grades
So I had the 1004 Paul blaer exam today for extra time reasons. In the middle of the exam I felt so sick and asked to leave. Idk what to do tho, I think I went over the ascribed time before you can’t defer the exam. Should I ask to defer given that I didn’t even do any work for the last 30 mins I was in there?? It feels so unfair that they’d grade the exam as a whole.
this is the email I got after leaving early
I took OS class with Jason Nieh this semester, he is a brillant professor but the exams are nothing but making people depressed, the mid term was hard, median was like around 45, the final was even a hundred time worse than the midterm, I think I will end up having a 20/100 or sth,
I am pass/fail it, I did a calculation I will probably end up having a C- or even D, so I was wondering does Jason like Jae not give prople lower than C- unless cheating?
The content was so interesting and Jason's teaching was very enjoyable as well, but avoid to take his OS class unless you don't care about you GPA, I doubled my time on OS than other classes I am taking this semester but I am still failing it
will the mail center just return my packages if i dont go pick them up while im away for break or will they hold them.. kinda scared my packages are just gonna be sent back and im gonna have like 5 of them arriving over break
Why tf is Latin honors at Columbia not based on department? Im actually appalled. Especially as a stem major the idea that I could get over a 3.8 atp seems kinda unattainable. And youre telling me im gonna be pitted against creative writing and english majors bro what. Aren't latin honors supposed to be based on department because of the varied difficulty of majors??? What is going on at this school
Newly admitted Columbia college student here. What should I know about the school?
