If anyone is actually still here from back when ClannadDiscussion watched Clannad 11 years ago

With the death of reddit imminently upon us, I just wanted to reach out to anyone who may have been here way back when. It's hard to believe over a decade ago I stopped being a lurker to join in these streams and even spawned /r/groupanime which enjoyed a few years of regular activity.

To anyone who may or may not read this and hopped into Anthro's synchtube room so many years ago: this subreddit singlehandedly began the best change in my life. I've made lifelong friends because of this sub and reddit as a whole and it breaks my heart to see what this platform is becoming.

I'll refrain from writing an essay which I typically do lol, but I just wanted to say that. If you were here, thank you for being there at one of the greatest turning points of my life.

With love,
Sunohara Destroyer <3

Where can I watch clannad: after story?

I'm not sure if they removed it from HIDIVE, but it isn't appearing on it anymore. I know it has the OG Clannad as well as Crunchyroll :(

An epic ride: clannad

I fell in love with this story. It's so emotionally moving. IT TOOK ME JUST 3 DAYS TO FINISH BOTH THE SEASONS: "CLANNAD" & "CLANNAD: AFTERSTORY" WITH 22 EPISODES EACH THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO TELL YOU HOW INTERESTING IT IS. BEFORE GOING INTO THIS, EVERYONE WHO RECOMMENDED IT WAS WARNING ME ABOUT HOW EMOTIONAL IT IS AND HOW I SHOULD MAYBE ONLY WATCH SEASON 1 SO I WENT IN WITH HIGH HOPES. CLANNAD IS VERY SLOW BURN AND IT TAKES A LONG TIME TO GET INTO CEAR. THE FIRST SEASON IS A HIGHSCHOOL ROMANCE WITH HEART AND THE SECOND SEASON IS SOMETHING THAT MOST ANIMES DON'T DEPICT: WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SHE SAYS YES AND HOW DO THEY LIVE THEIR LIFE. BUT WHEN SEASON 2 EVENTUALLY HITS, IT PUNCHES YOU STRAIGHT IN YOUR NETHERS. FROM EPISODE 17 TO 22 OF S2, I KEPT TEARING UP FROM SCENE TO SCENE AND I REALISED HOW IF I HADN'T SAT THROUGH THE FIRST SEASON AND FIRST HALF OF THE SECOND SEASON, I WOULDN'T FEEL WHAT I DID THEN. I WOULDN'T SAY THAT CLANNAD IS THE MOST EMOTIONALLY INVOKING ANIME I'VE EVER SEEN ( FOR ME IT'S STILL BUNNY GIRL SENPAI) BUT CLANNAD IS DIFFERENT. I THINK IT'S FOR THE FIRST TIME THAT, A HIGHSCHOOL ROMANCE TURNED SLICE OF LIFE ANIME IS GIVING LESSONS ON THE IMPORTANCE AND SACRIFICE OF PARENTS. IT HITS DIFFERENT. IT LEAVES YOU TEARED UP FOR ALL THE WRONG REASONS, SOMEHOW YOU RESONATE WITH THE CHARACTER SO MUCH AND YOU BREAKDOWN AT THE PAIN THEY ENDURE. I'D BLINDLY RECOMMEND CLANNAD TO ANYONE, BUT I'D ADVICE THEM TO HAVE SOME PATIENCE CAUSE IT TAKES ITS OWN SWEET TIME, BUT TRUST ME, IT PAYS OFF

Tomoya, nagisa and ushio will always stay in your heart.....

But I have a question: in season 1, how does Nagisa know about the play's story cause I know why tomoya knows it cause he was the robot, the girl is ushio...but how does Nagisa know?

Universe [Discussion]

What other universes can you see being within the Clannad story? Like, what would be going on? I mean, we have the main universe, the Ryou and Tomoya universe, the Tomoyo and Tomoya universe, and the girl and the robot universe (which wasn't that basically just Tomoya and Ushio living different lives and then being reincarnated or whatever? Yes, it has been awhile since I've see. Clannad). I'd like to think there would be a universe where Sunohara ended up with someone, even if that someone ended up being Tomoya lol.

Check this subreddit out!

With permission from the mods, i'd like to tell you about a subreddit some of us (including myself) have created. /r/GroupAnime is like this SR, except we are streaming anime more frequently, and we are showing a variety of anime. So think of it as something to watch and discuss while waiting for the weekly episode of Clannad to stream. As we are still working things out, we won't be having any formal schedules, but usually we have a casual stream every night. So come by and check us out!

Edit: Grammar

Clannad Movie Review (light reading, I promise)

Hey, (I lied btw)

I was just wondering about your guys' opinions on the Clannad Movie. I just spent the last week re-watching both seasons, and then, capping it off by watching the movie. And for all of it, it was the second time viewing all of such things. However, it was the first time I had watched it n Japanese.

I was deeply appreciative of the opportunity to watch the TV series again, and it brought back a lot of memories. I also grew quick on the fact that (in my opinion, and in many others) that the Japanese voice actors are incredibly superior to the english ones. It almost made me like the series a bit more because of the intense emotion in the voice actors during crucial moments.

SPOILER ALERT After tearing through (in more ways than one) through both seasons, I decided to watch the movie again, regardless of the fact that I didn't like it at all the first time I had watched it. The completionist in me just had to do this. I even thought the Japanese voice acting might be worth it to just pull me through it.

Problem 1: Voice Acting However, that is the first problem. All of the voice actors are the exact same (from what I can tell) EXCEPT the main character, Tomoya. This threw me off so much in the first 5 mins that I immediately went to IMDB/Wikipedia to confirm that my sanity wasn't lost, but indeed it was about to be lost.

Problem 2: Animation Studio My sanity was lost mostly because of the fact that (to my knowledge) this movie was not produced by the same studio that had made the TV anime. That doesn't really bother me all too much, but it kind of brings the fanboy out in me, enough to the point where I can start to be irritated. It just doesn't... feel right. In fact, it leads me to my next point which is caused because every studio/artist has their own way of displaying emotions and other kinds of comic relief.

Problem 3: Character Personality Conflicts Because Comic relief is displayed differently between different art styles, the comedy comes from different sources. The way that Toei animation tended to (atleast in this particular film) display their comic relief was completely melodramatic. And 9/10 times, it was forced through Sunohara Youhei. They turned him into a spastic monkey and changed his character completely. Granted, Sunohara Youhei was a comic relief outlet in the TV series, but not to the extent in the movie. They also gave Furukawa Sanae and Furukawa Akio completely different personalities to the point where I wondered where the third stooge had gone. I was also quite disappointed about the character changes in Fujibayashi Kyou and Sakagami Tomoyo, they ended up being the student council pets the whole time.

That brings me to the point of supporting characters in general. They did a poor job of displaying supporting characters at all, and for anyone that had never seen Clannad, or watched the movie to get an intro scoop on the story, would be completely befuddled to the point of probably shutting it off 20 mins into the movie. Honestly, after the movie ended, I tried to think the logic between certain points in the story and tried to think of how a person who is not familiar with the story to begin with could even begin stringing the story together. First off, almost all supporting characters are either neutered (As shown in the paragraph above) or just completely removed all together.

Fujibayashi Kyou - Conflicting personality, has completely different interests and roles, only shows up in 2 or 3 short clips in the movie that do nort really contribute to the plot.

Fujibayashi Ryou - Not even in the movie to my knowledge.

Ichinose Kotomi - Appears once as a director of the choir. (as an easter egg I assume, which feeds more into my paragraph before about it targeting only the Clannad Fan audience)

Sakagami Tomoyo - Conflicting personality, still has the same interests in the student council and such, but then turns into a stickler and contradicts Tomoya and pals with the whole set of recruitment scenes. And then, just turns up in the end of the movie for no reason. (ill explain in a later segment)

Yoshino Yusuke - Is put in as a support to move along the careers of Sunohara and Okazaki (more on that later)

Ibuki Fuko - Does not appear to my knowledge

Ibuki Kouko - Extremely conflicting character. For some reason she is teaching in the same year as Tomoya is in school, and also for some reason she has replaced the role of Tomoyo as the schools' "vigilante ass-kicker" for no apparent reason.

Furukawa Akio - Stated above, challenges tomoya to a baseball match for no apparent reason when they first meet.

Furukawa Sanae - Stated above

Okazaki Naoyuki - For some reason a fatherly figure in all scenes, and is not seen as a complete bum like he was depicted in the TV series. He also went out to help Tomoya multiple times in the latter parts of the movie (after Nagisa's Death) to help out his depression, which does not fit his character at all.

Okazaki Shino - Does not appear to my knowledge

Sagara Misae - Does not appear to my knowledge

Sunohara Mei - Does not appear to my knowledge

Miyazawa Yukine - Does not appear to my knowledge

MAIN CHARACTERS:

Now let's focus on the only 3 characters that apparently only matter in the entire story; Furukawa Nagisa, Okazaki Tomoya, and Sunohara Youhei. The story revolves so much around these three so much that it in fact hurts the story as a whole. I understand they only had 1-2 hours to tell the whole story of Clannad, but they could have at least made an effort to atleast introduce the important support characters along the way from the TV show. There is no excuse for them to ruin the personalities of characters or just omit them completely.

Okazaki Tomoya: They ultimately ruined this character for me when they changed the voice acting on him. (the ONLY voice acting change int he whole story to my knowledge!!)

-There is a scene where Tomoya is walking home in the rain and he gets a ride from Yusuke, in his electrical van. Yusuke goes on and on about people at the company worrying about him and wanting him back and blah blah blah. The problem here is that he never even had a job this early on in the series, and neither did Sunohara! And anyways, what is he so depressed about, his dad is SUCH a fatherly figure, right?

-Also, The first few scenes with him and Nagisa in them showed him having utter disgust for her, but then all of a sudden once her posters were shit on he had a complete change of heart and turned into this overly motivated individual that for some reason cared for Nagisa. There were no scenes that built the relationship of these two characters in my opinion, unless you count Nagisa stalking him up the hill TWO times, where he again, shows complete disgust. He ends up dating Nagisa over the dream thing/the threatre, which is an interesting sub-plot that I actually enjoyed out of this movie.

-Another odd interaction with Okazaki happens between him and Furukawa Akio. The first time he shows up at the Furukawa Bakery, Akio challenges him to a baseball duel for no apparent reason, and also is bullied multiple times by the Furukawa couple, and ends up being a part of the Akio comic relief which just disgusts me.

-After Nagisa dies and he goes into a depression, for whatever reason Tomoyo is there cooking him dinner trying to make him feel better with Sunohara. She is not introduced in the movie at all as a friendly character, and she goes from being a rule-following stickler to a housewife with no lead-up in-between.

Furukawa Nagisa: Speaking of Nagisa, her advancement of the relationship between her and Okazaki is extremely disjointed. They literally started going out, and then within 1 min of background narration and overshots of the town, (Which is not Hikarizaka in the movie either by the way) she has died and Tomoya is shot into a deep depression. Not to mention the fact also that her relationships with her friends are completely disjointed too. If I had not seen the TV series before the movie, I would have wondered what the hell happened and where these people even came from at the graduation ceremony scene. She was surrounded by characters that had no more than 30 seconds of screen time that were supposed to be her "best friends" that organized the ceremony for her because they cared so much for her.

Sunohara Youhei: In the same boat as Okazaki Tomoya, except he doesn't get the girl lol. For some reason he really wants to help Nagisa with the poster thing even though he had only met her like two times whilst drooling and howling over the fact that he had just scored some anpan or a sandwich or two.

Overall, I found the Movie to be a complete disaster which had me saying "what?" as I watched Toei animation tear apart the series I so loved. Both from a fanboy perspective, and a newcommer perspective I was completely confused on many things in the movie. It truly showed me the appreciation that Kyoto Animation deserves on making my still favorite anime after all of these years.

Disclaimer: I apologize if this is a bit bitchy, ranty, or even completely unorganized thought. This post was mostly written out of frustration over all of the reviews I saw completely praising the movie, which I don't understand. Made this post to draw attention to the movie and hopefully draw in some opinions to see how others feel about the film. My information may also not be 100% accurate because I watched the movie yesterday and I no longer have the DVD to reference for information regarding the movie itself to write this thread today. If any information is blatantly wrong, let me know and I will correct it.

TLDR: Clannad Movie is Disappointing, Fanboy cries in desperation and confusion
