Stray cats at monastery in downtown

TLDR: feeding stray cats at the monastery across from chef Tao’s Thai kitchen in downtown CM

Hi Reddit, I usually don’t post here but after my short visit to Chiangmai I felt the need to share a few things I encountered before leaving!

I saw many stray animals in the city and I think the locals do a good job at feeding them to the best of their abilities and resources. I particularly came across this monastery (location and pic below) where I saw many cats. I’m sure they congregate there because they are getting some amount of feeding. I know strays at monasteries can get food scraps from monks meals but usually the dogs benefit more from that.

Conveniently, there is a 7-11 just a few stores down where I bought cat food (18 bhat each) and fed about 10 cats there, they gobbled it all up so even if they are getting fed they are still hungry. There are a few store vendors there selling crafts, one told me “that cat’s name is __” so they seem to have affection for them. I bought extra wet food from the 7-11 and gave it to them and they were very receptive to that.

If you are a cat lover like myself, I urge you to visit this monastery and feed the cats or if anything give some cat food to the few crafts vendors there. If they are already feeding the cats I think that will help them with the costs.

Location: idk the name of monastery and it doesn’t show on maps, but it is right across the street from Chef Tao’s Thai cuisine in downtown CM. The entrance has a big elephant and is open until 1800. No entry fee. Once you walk through you will surely see the cats. I just chose a corner off the main road to pile some different areas of wet food on clean concrete (I was conscious of not leaving the cans as the monks will have to clean it up).

Thanks everyone !

Grandma selling bananas @ Chiangmai Gate night market

Hi Reddit, this is my first post, I’m usually a lurker but felt the need to share this with someone before I left.

I visited CM for 3 days. I visited the Chiangmai Gate night market where I spotted this old grandma (80s?) selling bananas at the corner of the Top chareon store. You could easily miss her stall if you didn’t come from her direction as it is a bit removed from the rest of the stalls. She sells bananas for 10 bhat each. I just felt so bad she was still working at such an age (I know it probably won’t be the first I encounter in Thailand). I asked for 2 bananas and she carefully squeezed each one trying to choose the plump ones for me. I gave her the remainder of the cash I had (only 500 bhat lol) which she was surprised and thankful. Not here to gloat about my deed, just want to advertise her hidden stall to the tourists and long-time stayers. I understand if you’re not one to give out free money, but just supporting her business and spreading word of her stall to friends would go a long way. If you’re a tourist, you’re likely going to end up at the CM gate market anyways so might as well pay her a visit! Thanks everyone.

PS: also made another post about the stray cats at this temple in CM, if you wanna take a look at that if you’re a cat lover like myself :)

Constantly told by everyone to not book any accommodation and just freestyle Chiang Mai, except now everything is completly booked out over the lantern festival period during arrival week?

Planning on spending 2-3 weeks in Chiang Mai next week and i've started with just a few nights booked to settle in and see what I like. Except now it appears that 99% of places are completly booked out around the festival period. What could I realistically expect with my options around this period?

Mae hong son loop

We are planning to do it in January. I have to questions. Should we book accomodation now or we can find it on the way? We don't really know how many days we want to spend in each place. We are a couple and we will rent one motorbike so we will take one backpack with us. Is there any place in Chiang Mai where we can leave one backpack for a week?

Giving food to beggars? Looking for some opinions

For context I had an edible today and I'm still pretty baked lol. Also I don't live in CM, I'm a tourist.

I went out to eat pizza but I couldn't finish half so I took the leftovers to go. As I was walking home I passed a beggar and gave her the coins in my pocket.

Then as I walked away I realised I literally have half a pizza for some one who could possibly be hungry. So I went back and used Google Translate to ask her if she would like it, and she accepted it. I also noticed one of her hands was deformed.

I read about beggar scams in Bangkok, and that apparently you shouldn't give money to beggars there because they're often faking. But this is the first beggar I have seen in Chiang Mai so far and I just acted on my gut instinct.

Did I do the right thing? I'm not sure why I feel conflicted about this.

Going a little stir crazy in CM.

I'm in the old city and starting to go a little nuts from the noise, traffic etc. I've found a few rooftop bars but does any one know of any green spaces (gardens, leafy cafe) that are quiet and serene. Also is a temple a good spot to go in search of some peace and quiet or is that frowned upon. Just need a bit of nature or a view and some semblance of quiet. My guest house is basic so no pool side spots, lounge area etc.

Lens eyeglass fix?

https://preview.redd.it/z0075py4ugyd1.jpg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=45faa87b5ab1260e25281a683171e4f6a02639a4

Hi all. Well, a tiny problem, not even, really a problem. However, the plastic lens popped out of my sunglasses frame thingee. I purchased these sunnies online. To replace I would have to buy a new sunglass, but I prefer not to do that if I can avoid.

So, is there any place in this fine city that will sell me a plastic lens, a simple prescription, that will fit into this frame?

Any advice appreciated.

New Subreddit - ThaiDIY

Hi All,

I just started a new subreddit: r/ThaiDIY. The goal here is to have a more focused place for those of us who are DIY'ers in Thailand to ask questions, share advice and relate experiences on DIY projects in Thailand. We'll focus on areas including:

  • General DIY
  • Plumbling
  • Electrical / HVAC
  • Landscaping
  • Automotive / Motorcycles
  • Etc...

Hopefully we can share where-to-find and how-to-do info for people in Thailand with DIY projects on hand or in the pipe.

I think both English and Thai languages will be fine.

If you'd like to help and be a Mod and maintain this community, please DM and we'll work together on it!

Thanks!

FF

Looking for relief printing artist/studio in Chiang Mai

I am looking to have a photoshoot with various relief printing props, but am having trouble finding an artist willing to let me use their pieces. I am willing to pay whatever is fair, and only need them for about a day.

Does anyone know of a place that may be interested?

Best places to experience Yi Peng and Loy Krathong

Folks, looking for suggestions on where best to experience the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng festival on 15th Nov and 16th Nov. The 'official' event seems to be fully sold out (the general feedback online anyways seems to be that this event is not only overpriced but a nightmare to get to). Also read that its no longer allowed to release lanterns around the Ping River

Your tips and suggestions welcome (including where best to park the car and walk around). thanks!

Does anyone know of any co-working spaces where they have laptops or computers to use /rent ? Internet cafes don’t exist anymore from what I can see. I just need an afternoon to update my resume on a bigger screen than my Phone /ipad.
