Guideline 1: While the subreddit errs on the side of allowing contributions, if you believe a submitted link or link on a comment may be spam, please report it immediately. If you would like to post your own content, the mod would appreciate a heads up first. Edit: Pretending not to know you're a spammer is not a defense to spamming.

From the reddiquette:

Feel free to post links to your own content (within reason). But if that's all you ever post, or it always seems to get voted down, take a good hard look in the mirror — you just might be a spammer. A widely used rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, i.e. only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.

Guideline 2: Submissions should be about cheap meals or ingredients or recipes, whether providing or asking for.

Guideline 3: Try to be nice.

Guideline 4: This community assumes good faith in those asking for help, and it's wonderful to provide that help in the form of cooking methods, recipes, shopping tips, storage tips, or places for people to get the food they need. That said, this is not an appropriate place to ask for direct aid of any kind, either on this subreddit or messaging the subscribers privately. Such behavior is indistinguishable from an attempt to scam, so I ask that if you are in such dire need you provide this community with the opportunity to point you in the direction of organizations and resources for those in dire need. Do not ask for money, do not ask for food.

I want to use a leftover ramen seasoning packet with frozen green beans. I have chicken and beef. Which should I use?

Also, do y’all have some good suggestions for cooking it? I’m not very experienced.

A little tip for those who have EBT (Food Stamps) and live near a Safeway

Safeway often has good deals and the reward points are also something to take advantage up. Depending on how much EBT you get you can get an extra 10$ off the next trip maybe 15$. So being a club member there will come in handy for sure. I'm currently without SSI and trying to get it back, but mean while I've been using some creativity to get by with food.

Spaghetti and soups will be your best friend, Safeway often has good deals on meats that are a big cut. So you can make a big batch of soup that can last you two weeks for a single person, if stored right. I have rice and oats as a last ditch effort plus some protein powder if I can get it. Milk powder is another great substitute if you can't really store milk for to long. Frozen fruit (while a bit expensive) mixed with well trail mix and some yogurt makes a good breakfast and you can stretch it by only having individual parts instead of combining to make it last longer. It may not be as good as olive oil, fat at Safeway is a dollar per pound and it is EBT approved. So you can cook with that if you can't get any cooking oil (just learned this recently actually) make sure to give them a days notice though. I do buy energy drinks though which isn't smart on my end but I run on it, though I can make a single can last 2-3 days.

College meals with only a microwave and mini fridge

So I’m trying to help out a friend that’s going through a rough time. He only has a microwave and mini fridge that he shares with his dorm roommate so there’s not much space in the fridge. What can I get him that isn’t super bad for him but is affordable? I’m thinking of some granola bars/protein bars but what else?

Do I have to throw my food out?

So I bought some frozen edamame beans Amy’s/ evol meals (which aren’t exactly cheap but I figured would be cheaper than take out) to take with me to my new office. Apparently they only have a fridge not a freezer. I went ahead and left them in the fridge not knowing what else to do with them. Are they worthless now? Do I have to throw them away?

The box says not to thaw first but is that like…. Just a suggestion? Or is it going to be super nasty?

What do y'all like to make in your rice cookers?

I'm on a mission here, I have 3 simultaneous goals: eat healthier, lower my grocery budget, and actually cook lol. As someone with ADHD, cooking has always been the bane of my existence and I survive almost solely on ready-made meals and things I don't need to cook (yogurts, for example, are a staple).

I recently bought myself a mini rice cooker with the hopes of easing myself into cooking this way! I hate cooking and it stresses me out quite a lot, so it's not sustainable for me to cook every single day. I figured by getting a rice cooker, I can not only make myself rice but also easy rice cooker recipes! I've been looking into simple rice bowls and am wondering that for others who like rice-based dishes, what do you like to make in your rice cookers?

Last night I threw together some rice, chicken stock, tilapia, soy sauce, and kewpie mayo and it turned out pretty good for a first try, but I'm looking for some more ideas!

Chicken gumbo no sausage no smokey flavor?

I was wondering if anyone has any gombo recipes or ideas for an only chicken gumbo? I don't have many veggies at the moment either but I'm pregnant and poor and DYING for something even resembling gumbo.

I'm running down on my ingredients at the moment and my only real meat right now is chicken and a little bit of porkloin. I know it would be missing that smokey flavor, and I'm not sure what I can do to replace it with what I've got.

Possible ingredients at my disposal right now are: -Rice -Onions -Black beans -Frozen broccoli -Chicken -porkloin -Pork loin bits -Worcestershire sauce -A1 sauce -Various common seasonings, including Cajun seasoning, non smoked paprika -can of green beans

ISO : Recipes

ISO of tried and tested - preferably kid friendly recipes: we literally eat the same 10 meals on rotation as the toddler is a picky eater and my husband has his favorite safe foods… but I am so done, time to change it up.

Cheap meal for a big guy who eats a lot

Hi,

English is not my first language but let me explain and make it short. If details needed on the story, simply ask ;)

One of my brother is tall, fat and, not linked at all, inconsiderate, rude and everything that goes with it.

He would be the one not lifting a finger and CONSTANTLY complain how there is not enough food and kill the mood.

Mind you, my brother could eat during the same meal a whole chicken by himself with sides, bottles of soda, a pizza...

We will be having dinner at my sister place. Her husband, the one cooking is the kind of guy who is in the "eat less, eat organic, eat better". Even when he wants to make an effort to do more, he just can't deal with our African family.

I want to spend a good night so I said, I will bring some heavy "aperitif" so, that will fill brother and even if the main Dish is tiny, it will be fine.

But I dont want to spend too much on this.

Knowing my brother doesnt like things like chips, peanuts...he likes having little real dish.

I was thinking of croque monsieur (reheat when I'll be there), mini pizza and I need a third idea with vegetables. Can't seem to find one. Tuna dip with cucumber and carrots ?

The thing is, kids will be also there. I don't want it to be fat and carbs only.

I would NEVER do that for him but this is a family meeting where there is legacy to discuss and I don't want to add his behavior on top of that.

Any (original and cheap ideas) to feed the beast?

If you wonder, bro is 40.

Thanks !

Challenge for cheap camper meals

My family camps throughout the summer, in campers (so we have cooking utensils and can store food), at state parks usually. They tend to go all out on these trips and this year we have challenged each other to, atleast one meal a trip, see who can make the best/cheapest meal for the group. We usually have anywhere from 6-10 people.

I am drawing a blank, so I am hoping for some suggestions. Whether it be recipes that others use, or a favorite website.
