How do I get to work at CERN?
If you want to work in physics, /u/cernette gave a pretty good summary in her AMA of the steps you need to take. To work at CERN as a student, visit the jobs page for students.

Hello, I just got accepted to CERN Quest programme and received the email of the procedure for visa which says I need to already know on which side I will live. Can someone tell me how you found the apartment, what documents I will need, or any other advice on the accomodation. Thanks in advance
So I'm in respect of rule two because I am not proposing a conspiracy theory, quite the contrary, so please don't delete this post as I am asking a scientific question out of curiosity. I just wanted to know something as some people have said Aliens have been visiting us, possibly due to activities like CERN. However I thought to myself this is a particle accelerator built underground and I considered presumably particles would not leave the place to be seen/detected by aliens anyway. I then remembered reading something about devices that would sit on the sea bed and look towards the earth itself collecting the tiniest of particles as they were the only ones that managed to get through the earth dodging all the matter to get there. So what may I ask if anything is leaving the CERN? TIA
Hi all,
Pretty much what the title said: did anyone have any updates regarding IT-GOV-INN-2024-182-GRAE?
Thanks!
Hey all, probably stupid question to ask here, but I need to try.
Still today, I went to visit CERN and, at the end, there was a merch shop with branded products.
I regret not buying the black cap but it's not like I can go there now to buy it.
Is there any other way to get the item without flying back there lmao.
I've thought about asking someone, but I don't know anyone near enough to have the courage to ask.
So here lies the question, any other way I can get the item?
Thanks

Has every applicant of It maths robotics got the invitation for the Hackerrank test.? If so, whats the purpose of this test, as in the mail its mentioned for a specific project.
Hi,
So I thought i'd just put in something here incase there was even a chance. I work as a Software Engineer and now have 5.5 years experience in infrastructure, platform and MLOps teams. I have a lot of experience in both development(python mostly) and operations(e.g CI/CD, IaC, bash, Linux administration and containerisation) but had a BEng in Mechanical engineering. I'm in the middle of a part time masters course in computer science in the UK and still work full time as a Software Engineer but won't finish until two years from now.
I have seen some jobs that I am extremely qualified for but in their eligibility criteria they all have:
" You have a professional background in Software Engineer (or a related field) and have either:
Is there even a point of applying, do they even take experience into consideration at all? I'm very sad and worried that the same opportunities won't be around in 4 years. I've only seen around 3 jobs that are in line with my experience but they all say the same thing. For the people who work in IT there, from your experience Is there any chance there's jobs that don't have that requirement might come up?
I got an email from the recruitment team at CERN for a test for the position in a project involving Data Management. There's a description of the problem and below there's a list of desirable skills (programming, shell scripts...) for the associated Hackerrank test.
Does anyone know if what's going to be asked on the test is more aligned with theoretical consideration of the project field/domain or more general programming questions related to the desirable skills?
I have a question if someone have navigated this situation before. For an PhD international student in a US university going to work at CERN for more than five month. Is that possible and how this should be handled? Did they came back every 5 month to avoid that situation?
Has anybody heard whether there has been any feedback on the Technical Studentship applications for 2025?
Does anyone know if the selection committee for the 2024 Fellowships has already met? When are offers sent atround/ have been already sent?
I would like to know that if a person joins Cern in pay gr.3-4, would he or she be paid basic salary or there are other allowances as well?
I have two years of experience as an electronics engineer, and I’m currently considering applying for the CERN Quest Programme. I’ve always been drawn to research, and this programme seems to combine that with hands-on, practical work.
I’m wondering about the career prospects afterward. If I were to spend two years at CERN and then decide to return to the industrial world, would this experience be seen as a positive asset, or could it be viewed negatively by companies? I’d love to hear from anyone who has experience with a similar transition!
Hi,
I'm currently planning to apply for a graduate position (GRAP) at CERN, but due to health reasons, I am only able to work at 80% capacity rather than full-time. I've seen on CERN's website that they do offer part-time contracts: "Where required or permitted by the circumstances, the Organization may grant employed members of the personnel (MPE) part-time contracts with a contractual working week of not less than 20 hours."
I'm wondering if anyone here has experience with requesting part-time work at CERN, especially for health reasons, and if so, could you share your insights on how best to navigate this?
Some specific questions I have:
Any advice, personal experiences, or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Ok, I know this might be weird, but yesterday was the first time in my whole life that I have heard about CERN. So, my university has announced that the “Summer Student Program 2025” is open for application and that it will be fully funded by my university. So, I did some research, and what I have understood is that this program is mostly focused on physics (Honestly, I hate physics). My major is computer engineering, I love coding, and the reason I’m interested in this program is because ETH Zurich is in my list of “universities I intend to continue my Master degree at” and I think this experience could give me a glimpse of what I should expect (environment and society wise). My questions are: does the program have anything at all to do with coding? Is it for me, or does it highly focus on physics with no coding at all? What am I supposed to expect from this program? I really want to read the opinions of people who have experienced this program.
Hello everyone,
I'm a graduate student in High Energy Physics, eager to apply my data analysis skills to a real-world challenge. I'm currently participating in a hackathon focused on developing an efficient machine learning pipeline for CubeSats.
The challenge:
I'm seeking advice on:
And also I would like to know if you know about related problem that is related to the particle physics domain so I could work on it to gain experience.
Any insights, tips, or code snippets would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, I am planning to apply for a mechanical engineer position. I would like some advice on my CV. In particular, is a two-column format fine or should I use a single-column format ? Thanks in advance !
Hello,
I was just wondering if it’s possible to ask for a Swiss B permit as soon as you start working at CERN and live in Switzerland, or are you obligated to use the ‘carte de légitimation’? I’m interested in obtaining the C permit later on, but I’ve been told the years spent at CERN don’t count since you don’t have the B permit.
Thanks in advance
Hey, how you all doing?
I'm applying for the adm program for the second time. Last time, as soon as I submitted my application, I was called for the HireVue interview. This time, it's been like a week and I still haven't received an interview invitation. Has anyone here applied and received one?
many thxxx
Hi!
I work at CERN; my wife is a freelancer who will apply for a Ci permit. I would be grateful if you could help with a few questions.
The website https://www.ge.ch/demander-permis-travail-employeur-suisse/titulaire-carte-legitimation states that "A Ci permit is issued in exchange for the legitimation card." Also, it looks like the original legitimation card has to be sent along with the application. Is this really so, and will my wife not have any ID during the application process?
Currently, she is insured under CHIS. But given the exchange of the legitimation card with a Ci permit, will it be possible to stay insured under CHIS? If yes, will the monthly CHIS payment depend on her income?
I am applying for the position of data scientist and on the application page there is the option to write a message to the hiring team (no maximum number of characters required). In the next page I see another box (which must be filled out, max characters 1400) where they ask about my motivations for applying. Both of the questions seem quite similar, so I was wondering what was the difference and how I should address both questions. Is the first one more of a general resumé and the second one more specific to the role? Any help would me greatly appreciated
I have some family I’d like to be close to moving to Geneva for starting their career post PhD. I’m currently a FAANG engineer, working @ HQ, but I dropped out of college to pursue the role.
I see some roles that apply to my skillset and interests, but see on a lot of roles that college degree is required + max 2 years experience (finished my third year in August and am on my fourth). I’m on the border between jr and mid dev.
CERN was a dream back in high school before life took me on an odd path. Am just curious if anybody has any insight. I see some roles using tech that I love and would be excited to contribute to the work being done, but am adult enough to understand if I would need to go back to school to even try.
TIA!
Edit: This can be marked as resolved. Cheers!
I know this is can be considered a very silly post to write. But I'm desperate now. I need a job. I have a master's degree in aerospace engineering. And I'm really good at this, engineering. But because I did this in a country I'm not a native of, I can't get a job here due to visa issues. It's been over an year now. At this point my only option is to either try for another country or go back to my own which I really don't want to do (personal issues, theres nothing left for me there). I have craved to work for cern for so long. And I've been actively trying to apply for a job here for about a year now. But since I don't have an industry experience in my CV it's obviously not a strong CV. What do I do? I really want to work here. Please help. I can't go on like this.
PS: I apologise for the randomness and grammatical errors. It hasn't been a kind few weeks. Edit: more context. I'm Indian. Did my masters in the UK, living here now. My bachelor's degree was in electronics engineering.
