Me and my friend found a swallowtail caterpillar on a dying piece of fennel growing in a piece of concrete. we saved it, and i've had him in an enclosure for around 2 weeks with branches, the appropriate food, and have been cleaning it regularly. but it will NOT climb up to cocoon? its been almost 3 weeks since we rescued it and it's been eating regularly but not making any effort to climb to cocoon. what do we do?? i think maybe it tried to form a cocoon because there was a weird black thing coming out of it that wasn't feces, but it's not attached to anything but his body. Help!!
It is turning yellow for the smaller one, and t has not been eating. I have been feeding it with Pinwheel Jasmins (Tabernaemontana species). I got it yesterday. the bigger one today. If i was not wrong, the smaller one which i got yesterday was bigger. Do anyone know what happening to them?
I’m a tad worried that these caterpillars will eat the part of the leaf this chrysalis is hanging from. Do I relocate the caterpillars to a different part of the plant and risk hurting them, or do I just leave them be and let nature take its course? Will they know to leave the chrysalis alone?
I found this fella on the floor of my house, México, Ciudad de México,, it curls in itself when is touched
I've been keeping a Noctua pronuba caterpillar for a few days now, and it has become pretty sluggish and not active at all. It mostly stays buried in the soil for most of the day and only comes out during the evening/night. I'm really worried about him - is this a normal thing? I read somewhere that these caterpillars can overwinter and become moths in the spring but I'm not sure if that's what's happening. If it is though how can I take care of him during it?
When I first found him he was very active and ate a ton but now I haven't seen him eat in a while even though I give him fresh leaves every day. I also make sure to mist his enclosure. I know he's well in the sense that he moves around every night since I find him buried in a different spot every morning.
I might just be overreacting but is this normal/is this how overwintering looks like in caterpillars? If so how can I care for him until spring to ensure he's doing well? Any other tips are appreciated, I've only kept one kind of caterpillar in the past and this guy has me worried.
Do we know what is it? I have never seen on like this in my country!
I live in Minnesota where the day time high temperatures are in the 20° F range. Apparently a wooly bear caterpillar made it into my house - found it in my basement, temps are in the low 60°s Fahrenheit. I put it in a container with some spinach (the only greens I have on hand). Was thinking I should put it in the garage tomorrow(which is marginally warmer than outside) to help it go into hibernation, and later this weekend tuck it into the leaf litter in my back garden. Would that be the right thing to do?
Spain, near Barcelona I was kind of on a rush so I couldn't take a better picture, sorry
