A happy middle between /r/movies and /r/TrueFilm. Come join us in the casual and judgement free discussion of movies and topics related to movies. Every Wednesday is our Weekly What are you Watching thread, check it out!

  1. CasualFilm is for the discussion of all movies. To borrow from TrueFilm, clear, polite and well written response should be what is up voted, whether you agree with the opinion or not. Do not post one word or one sentence replies and in regards to quotes please say what the movie is.

  2. Discussion on all aspects of film making is encouraged. Have a favorite editor or cinematographer? Make a post about them! Titles should not be ambiguous, please clearly state what is being discussed.

  3. The sub is CasualFilm, TrueFilm is truly an excellent subreddit, but we don't want to go too in-depth so more casual fans of movies don't get intimidated.

  4. Discussion on things like favorite quotes, favorite opening scenes, movie recommendations, and list topics are all encouraged but remember we're here to discuss. Opinion questions such as what is your favorite movie, or what is your favorite soundtrack should NOT have your answer in the body. Make your answer a comment.

  5. MARK YOUR SPOILERS! Use this form, delete the space between the # and the s [](# s "Rosebud is Dil's father")

  6. Every Wednesday we will be having our "Wednesday's Weekly What are You Watching" thread, however please don't feel obligated to hold off hosting your own discussions until then.

Hey,

I'm leaving the threads and posts up as an archive. It was a lot of fun trying to make a little place where casual film discussion could be done. If you're looking for that /r/flicks is where you should go.

I'd also like to plug the subs dedicated to smaller genres like /r/giallo and /r/kungfucinema. Let's make those places bigger!

Gaurdians of the Galaxy

I watched GOTG a few days ago and I was blown away at how awesome it was. Vin Diesel brought back memories of Iron Giant in his role of Groot, Bradley Cooper was great as Rocket the Raccoon, and Chris Pratt was perfect as Star Lord. The story was great, the acting was good, the action was exciting, and the comedy was funny. I would recommend this movie to almost anyone. 8.5/10

What are your favorite films (new & old) seen in 2014 so far?

Being that it is a little past half way through 2014, what are your favorite films so far?

Your favorite film that was released this year?

Your favorite that you saw for the first time this year, not necessarily released this year?

Your favorite film you have previously seen but rewatched this year?

Drive (2011) Discussion

After hearing many great things about the film Drive I decided to check it out for myself. Although I really enjoyed the film, I felt like it had been slightly over rated by many. I had no major complaints with the film and enjoyed the performances, and the directing even more so, but the story felt flat and bland. This wasn't a pacing issue for me but more along the lines of feeling that it was a forgettable script that didn't do much to earn its reputation. I truly feel like I am missing something here. What do you feel makes this film so special and why? (I consider this film very good and a solid 7/10. In no way do I believe the film is bad.)

What; if any, movie(s) do you refuse to watch because of the hype?

For me it's Citizen Kane. The fact that everyone talks about it and how great it is makes me feel like it can't possibly live up to the hype.

When has a rabid circle-jerk/seemingly undue praise turned you away from a movie?

What is a film pairing (director/actor, actor/actor, director/cinematographer, etc.) that instantly sells you? (Real examples or hypotheticals)

What are your favorite film pairings? And what are some film pairings that you would love to see some day? And why.

Since when did we start caring about realism in movies?

More recently, I've noticed that the most common complaints for films are attributed to either a scientific error, a slip in logic, or something "unrealistic." I understand that a film must be logical to some degree, but when you're watching a movie about talking robots, flying superheroes, or a super-advanced A.I., shouldn't we expect something creative and nonsensical that makes us leave reality? Weren't movies made for entertainment? Wasn't it something audiences can watch to escape their dull lives filled with following rules and living in a world where 1+1=2? Why can't we entertain ourselves with the idea of a team of experienced drillers traveling to outer space to drill holes in an asteroid? That will never happen in real life, but it does exist in movies.

If Teen Wolf (1985) came out today with the exact plot, I'd expect the movie to be shredded by critics and fans alike. "Why don't other people care that he is a werewolf?" "How can being a werewolf give you hops and LeBron James-esque basketball skills?"

I'm not saying that this is entirely a bad thing - I just don't think we should use factual or scientific errors to judge a film's quality. That'd be like mocking a Picasso portrait. There are plenty of other factors we can use to critique a movie, such as cliched dialogue, bad acting, and continuity errors.

Thanks for reading my rant. Let's discuss.

What are some examples of overacting?

Just watched Liar Liar (1997) with Jim Carrey and felt he got caught in his own schtick and overacted way too much. Jim Carrey became too much Jim Carrey and felt that an alright 90s feel good comedy could've been way better with another lead.

Would True Romance have been better with the original ending?

Spoilers obviously follow. In the original script (written by Quentin Tarantino) for True Romance, ( #s the protagonist Clarence is shot and killed during one of the final scenes.) However, the director Tony Scott changed the ending after he fell in love with the characters, stating that the romantic inside him wanted to see these characters live happily ever after. Personally, I loved the ending. While the original version may have made it a better film, this one made it much more endearing to me. But maybe I'm just being sappy, what's your opinion?

Capturing the true feeling/emotion in a film/Love Me if Your Dare.

It's not the BEST move I've ever seen, but it's definitely my favorite movie… In the states it's called Love Me if You Dare (Original French title is: Jeux d'enfants.) I'm not sure how well-known it is, but I've never met anyone that's seen it (at least before I made them sit down and watch it.) It's the closest I've ever seen a film really capture the insanity and desperate-obsession that love can drive you to. Maybe because of some stuff I was going through at the time I saw it, but it still sticks with me and still moves me and makes me both believe and get nervous about true love each time I see it. Watching the movie's tone/aesthetics change subtly to match the different ages of the characters and seeing it go from magical innocence to more focused and realistic world, and then to a dark and almost nightmare world is one of my movie-going experiences and makes me remember why I fell in love with cinema as a story-telling medium.

The reason the movie sticks out to me as a very close capture of human emotions is that between the story, the actors, and the shifting tones of the movie it really helps capture the instability of true love. It shows the characters as willing to do whatever it takes to keep their connection, whether it be hurting other loved ones or even themselves. If you’ve ever been involved with one of those whirlwind loves that often does more damage (both collaterally and personally) than good, but you still can’t get out of it (or don’t even want to) I think this movie really captures that feeling. Bonus points: The song La Vie en Rose is played throughout the movie, but in different styles/genres which sticks to the theme of a changing but still constant love throughout the movie. It’s also considered Marion Collitard’s (sp?) breakout role.

So, I guess my question is two-part:

1.) Have any of you seen this, and if so you do agree or disagree that it can transcend a movie talking about love and actually show you what real love feels like? 2.) Do you know of any other movies that you feel go beyond telling you how to feel about the story, and actually brings that emotion out in you, just through storytelling? (I guess horror would be an obvious genre for that, but what about others?)

Sorry if this is rambling, I typed this all up while at work and talking to customers about… god knows what.
