Is there any way to convert a 2d rectangular map into a 2d or 3d globe map?

I've made this rectangular map using inkarnate and I want to make it look like the oval-like maps that are often used to depict earth more accurately.
Additionally, I'd like to know if there is a step further and a way to create a 3d map.

I want to teach GIS/ Cartography, create a community

Hey there!

I currently have a Masters in GIS and have a company focused on the cartography/ artwork/ graphic design side of map making. My heart has always been in wanting to teach. I don't really know who exactly the target audience would be- maybe those who have basic GIS skills but want to make better looking maps, I can hone in on how to create more cartographically appealing maps...but I don't think there are too many people looking to do this.

I also thought about focusing on having just basic GIS/ Cartography where I can teach and provide a lot of free resources. Like working on open source software like QGIS, etc. How to data mine for free data, using free design platforms like Canva. I'd love to teach and show people how they can create maps on their own without paying for a degree. Obviously I would need to charge a small fee for their membership- but being able to not have as much student loans like I do would be cool to help people.

Any ideas/ feedback- thanks!

Political maps of my Minecraft server, 4 years ago (2020) vs today (2024)

https://imgur.com/a/7V7Gl5D

(Using an Imgur link because the pictures didn't show up when I tried uploading them to Reddit, twice)

I've been on this server for almost six years now, and one of the coolest things to me is how all contemporary politics have something from the past in them. In the case of the current map, almost every one of the currently-existing countries can trace their current state, or at least influencing factors, back to the earlier one.

For instance, the Sylvian Union dissolved at the end of 2020, with Rhett merging into HUM and Montrose later absorbing Banapo.

Likewise, Kovska and Hightower both disbanded (at least functionally) around the same time, in 2021. However, Kovska's lands were abandoned, while Hightower was claimed, first by Oberos and then sold to Redstone Valley. When Kovska was reclaimed by the then-newly-created Naador in March 2023, the border seen in 2020 between Kovska and Hightower was recreated almost perfectly, which can be seen still today, even though it was between two countries that had nothing to do with the lands' previous owners. (Part of Kovska was also under RSV's and later Nyania's control for a couple months until it was returned back to Naador after a war. Surprisingly, this has not been an issue in their current political union.)

Feel free to ask me about any other borders/countries on the maps, I'm an encyclopedia of the history of this server.

Best current Atlases available

just trying to find out if their are any world atlases that are more comprehensive than the top 4 I'm aware of

  1. national geographic world reference atlas

  2. times world reference atlas

  3. oxford world reference atlas

  4. DK world reference atlas

the longest one is the times but that is only 528 pages which while they are large pages that still doesn't seem like its a lot given how much its covering so I'm just curious if their is anything more comprehensive even if its in the form of a set of volumes as apposed to a single book

Digital bearings

I hope this sub is a good place to start for this. I’m into geocaching and am trying to solve a mystery puzzle. The puzzle lists 5 other geocaches and gives a bearing from each one, then it lists a 6th cache with a distance. If I had a map and a compass, I’m confident I could knock this out fairly easily, but alas, I have neither. Is there a map tool or app out there somewhere that will let me pinpoint a coordinate and then draw a line at a certain bearing?

Hand Drawn Map

Howdy,

I’m a forester and make maps and conduct spatial analysis constantly in my work. Over the years, I’ve grown to love old maps and the process of making new ones digitally. I’ve grown interested in making maps by hand which I did once in college where we shot the bearing and distance around the perimeter of a forest and made a map to scale. I would like start drawing maps to scale in my free time but don’t know where to start when looking online. Does anyone recommend a good beginning cartographers kit and a book or website with hand drawn map exercises?

Thanks!

Where to find data?

Hi all, I'm in a cartography 2 class where I need to make some interactive and animated maps as part of a final, but I'm struggling where to find good data to make these types of maps. Some ideas I had was to map out where species have traveled due to urban growth, but I'm open to anything environmental-related data that's easy to find.

Helping my Spectrum Kid (10) get into Cartography

Like the title says. I'm looking to help my 10 year old get into cartography. He's fascinated by maps and geography, and I was looking for resources to help get him started in potentially map making and eventually GIS stuff (I'm familiar with Esri and their resources, but he's a little young still). I did some searches here already and found stuff that seems to be aimed at folks further along in their education (like this - https://www.reddit.com/r/cartography/comments/uez2kz/can_i_be_a_cartographer/ ), but was wondering if there were good child-friendly resources, youtube channels (map men is a bit talky for him now but I could see him getting into it in a few years), books, videos, or activities?

I work in IT (so tech/GIS software isn't scary to me, just maybe not all of it age appropriate for him) and used to do geocaching with handheld etrex units so I was thinking of teaching him the basics of orienteering and putting waypoints down at the local park as a way of getting him started, but I'm not sure how else I can encourage him to explore this interest.

RGB / hex colour values for UK AA road atlas

Hi, I'm creating a map and I want to style the roads on it in the colours of a UK AA road atlas. Can anyone tell me where I can find the RGB or hexadecimal values for the particular colours that they use for the roads (motorway blue, dual carriageway green, etc)?

Thanks

Not sure who will find it useful but I made a command- line tool that reduces the file size of GeoJSON files

You can read more here:

I'm open to any and all feedback so please don't hesitate!

A cloud based solution for Indigenous data sovereignty

As a follow-up to our MapSafe paper (https://www.mapsafe.xyz), we have just published another in the Transactions in GIS Journal.

"A cloud based solution for Indigenous data sovereignty: protecting biodiversity management data in Aotearoa New Zealand"

https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/tgis.13153

The Indigenous Geospatial Data Sovereignty web-application integrates multiple geospatial data safeguarding and verification features within GeoNode. Sovereign data owners can obfuscate, encrypt, and notarise it. These functions are integrated within GeoNode and run client-side in the browser, meaning geospatial data never leaves the computer unprotected, presenting a completely trustless mechanism for sharing data. This way, indigenous users can protect, share, and control access to sensitive geospatial data by themselves, eliminating reliance on a third party to perform these security functions.

A 4-minute video demonstrating the tool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9aWbBVhRNRo&ab_channel=BioHeritageChallenge

This is a crucial tool for recognising Indigenous geospatial data sovereignty.
