โWhy are flour tortilla tacos called burritos? ๐ฏ ๐ซ
In those years, when the Paso del Norte was growing to become what is today Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, people from all over came to work on the big constructions of the city. Lived in the mountains a man named Don Juan Mendez, who began to sell rich tacos made of egg flour with beans and unhebrada meat (hare meat). He became so popular that his whole family started working on making many flour tacos. To the point that he had to carry his donkey to load the baskets. The donkey and her cubs were carrying two baskets each.
Don Juan came to sell his food, and people shouted: "The burrito lord has arrived!" ", referring to that donkeys or donkeys were their means of transportation to reach their destination with food. โThe burritos have arrived! ", the people shouted. This is how the name of those flour tacos that we all know as burritos was born, in the Paso del Norte, which is currently Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. And the man was called Don Juan Mendez. Interesting story isn't it!?โ
Check out 524 Mexican Food on Northgate Blvd, they have the absolute BEST chorizo breakfast burrito I ever had. It was the size of a baby and only like $17 with sides included.
Real costs & I'm going to mark them up for good measure:
Tortilla - $0.20 cents
Beans - $0.85
Rice - $0.35
Seasonings - $0.25
Chicken - You aren't getting nearly 1 lb of shredded chicken. More like 0.1 lbs. But lets say 1 lb for the sake of easy math. 5 lb. whole chicken is $8, so 1 lb is $1.60.
Real cost is around $3.25. You can add more ingredients like sour cream but it doesn't change the fact. To-go burritos from local spots and trucks are $16 - $18... Some $13 difference! I'd love to try their burritos. But it's really not entertaining when you can cook enough to make a burrito. Potentially, a better burrito since I'd have $10 to play around with!
Weren't basic burritos meant to be cheap? I can get an artisan pizza baked in a wood oven for $15. That margin is not as wide for tacos in my area. Why burritos?
