Looking for a primary care physician

Hello I’m new to the area and new to being on my own health insurance! Looking for recommendations for primary care physicians, fine with nurse practitioners. I’m on Aetna insurance starting Jan 1 and I can see providers on their website but just not sure where to start, and who is accepting new patients right now. I’m near south point but would be willing to drive a little. Thank you!

Charlie Brown tree?

We’re a little late to the game this year. Is there anywhere we can find a live, small Christmas tree, like a lil’ Charlie Brown tree that needs love?

Redstart issues

We started ordering weekly from Redstart. I love their food, however we have had so many issues with them. Sending out severely undercooked meals, missing ingredients (no cheese in the ham & cheese croissant), missing entire meals because they misjudged the number they needed. They receive all their orders in advance online, so how could they make such a colossal mistake? The notice they sent regarding missing meals wasn’t at all clear regarding refunds and the rest of our order. Anyone else have these issues? We will be switching to Strongarm and/or Snack Service.

A Cozy Spot for a Gathering on 12/28

Trying to plan a last-minute birthday celebration and looking for a bar that's cozy and has nice cocktails, but won't be overwhelmed by 15-20 people rolling in. (I've got no idea what counts as "a big enough group that it's an event.")

Since the pandemic, I've become an antisocial potato, so I've got no idea what the best options are these days. Any suggestions?

Duke Signature Care?

Does anyone use the "concierge" health care at Duke? Is it worth it? An extra ~$2500. Pricy, but I'm on a 12month wait-list for specialists, FML.

Middle school camp ideas?

My middle schooler is looking for summer camp (anywhere in NC is fine!) where she can learn more about psychology and/or astronomy. (Unfortunately, Morehead Planetarium camps for this age focus on drones and rovers so not a good option.) Most stuff seems geared towards high schoolers. Any ideas?

looking for folks to casually play music with from time to time

hey everyone,

I’m a 27 year old dude in Durham who misses the ease of finding people to nonseriously jam with while in college. if you are also someone who finds yourself looking for other people to jam/play music with in a casual environment, feel free to send me a message!

currently living and working in durham, I have been in a number of bands/projects as a singer/songwriter/guitarist. I play a variety of instruments but primarily guitar. If this sounds like something you’d have interest in participating in, i’d love to make a small group! feel free to shoot me a pm :))

thanks!

Article submission

I wrote an article about how I volunteer with a non-profit, ENGin, that matches English speakers and Ukrainians to tutor English. Are there any local little mags that would be interested in such a submission?

This guy didn’t care who he was going to sideswipe

Leaving Gocciolina, on Guess Rd tonight, heading back towards Trinity Park. We had to get into the turning lane to keep from him hitting us. All the way to the 85 overpass, he was swerving in and out of traffic, almost hitting several other cars.

Former Burger King site on Glenwood construction

I was under the impression that the Carroll's franchise that owned that Burger King abandoned the site after the restaurant burned down a while ago.

I noticed the rezoning signs around the site but normally the homeless hang out around that intersection with no signs or update.

Long winded way of asking if anyone knows what is going to go into that site. Specifically at Glenwood and Miami.

Temporary Dog Foster Needed to Help Local Family

Hi all! I volunteer with CrisisDogsNC and we are trying to help a Durham family by caring for their dogs while they get back on their feet. If you know anyone who could help in the NC area (they do not have to be Durham -- we can coordinate transport), please DM me and/or have them complete a foster application: https://crisisdogsnc.org/dog-foster/

FB Post: https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1D9BrQp3LQ/

THANK YOU!!

🚨 URGENT: Lola and Pixie Need a Temporary Foster by Friday (12/20)! 🚨

We are absolutely desperate to find a foster home for these two sweet senior girls. Their family is trying very hard to secure housing to get these sweet girls back—but the clock is ticking. We need your help NOW.

Meet Lola & Pixie🐾 Lola: A 10-year-old, 65-lb mix with a heart full of love. Her journey has been heartbreaking: she was rescued from a shelter in 2017, adopted into a loving home, and even completed training. But now, due to her owner’s tragic circumstances, she’s temporarily back in CrisisDogNC's care. Despite everything, Lola remains gentle, kind, and just wants to rest her weary head in a safe place.

🐾 Pixie: Lola’s bonded sister, who was surrendered alongside her. We couldn’t leave her behind. These girls are deeply connected and need to stay together.

💔 Why They Need You: These sweet seniors are perfectly house-trained, incredibly easy-going, and just want a calm, loving home. They’ve been through so much, and without a foster, their future is uncertain. They deserve to feel safe and loved this holiday season.

What They Need:

✔️ A home without cats or small dogs.

✔️ A calm household where they can decompress and feel secure.

We’re running out of time. Please, if you’ve ever considered fostering, now is the time to step up. If you can’t foster, SHARE the FB post or upvote this. Let’s give Lola and Pixie the holiday miracle they so desperately need.

"Drone" sightings?

Anyone seen the so-called drone swarms? WRAL had a segment that uses a bunch of videos that are mostly clearly just planes, and Maryland governor was apparently just looking at stars. Anyone actually seen anything weird lately? Edit: I ask because I am skeptical.

Public Comment Period - Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro MPO Program Management Plan Update

Hi all,

The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC MPO) is soliciting public comment for the Program Management Plan Update. I'm posting here because the City of Durham is an MPO Member.

Every 2 years, the MPO selects and funds transportation projects that improve mobility for seniors and people with disabilities via the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Section 5310 Grant. The Program Management Plan, or PMP, creates the rules for how these kinds of projects are selected and implemented—and the MPO is updating this now.

Review the Draft PMP, and share your comments here: https://www.dchcmpo.org/what-we-do/programs-plans/transit-plans/human-services-transportation-grants

Hairstylist Recommendation for Asian Hair?

Hi! I'm an Asian woman with coarse straight hair and I have a bit of trouble finding a stylist that can work with my hair. My usual stylist moved recently and it's a fairly long drive to her new location in North Raleigh (1+ hour) so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a hairstylist in or near Durham/Chapel Hill who has experience working with Asian hair.

Any recommendation is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Podiatrist that Does Orthotics at a Reasonable Price

I need to get a pair of casted Orthotics. The average price goes up to like $1,000 which is crazy.

Anyone know of a place where they're "only" like $500?

A New City Manager and Questions on Funding Priorities

What happened last night at Durham City Council?

  • A heartfelt tribute to Sam Cooke highlighted his connection to Durham and the inspiration behind his iconic song.
  • Concerns over NC Senate Bill 382's impact on local governance and city planning were raised, with calls for careful zoning considerations.
  • Residents voiced opposition to police funding, urging the council to prioritize housing and community support.
  • The council certified the bond referendum election, but not without addressing the potential gentrification and displacement it may cause.
  • A new City Manager was appointed, sparking debates on transparency and process.

It was a nearly three-hour meeting, but you can catch up quick with these highlights.

Durham Runaways

Is there an uptick in teenagers running away this year? I found an article highlighting November as the awareness month and such by abc11. https://www.google.com/amp/s/abc11.com/amp/post/runaway-prevention-month-national-safeline-highlights-available-resources-north-carolina/15553340/ But this doesn't give insight into Durham. I've had two close friends recently have their only child run away. One was more obvious for why (early drug usage), but the other I have no words. Great record all around.

Is there a way as a community we can come together during this crazy winter and keep kids safe and off the streets?
