You Know its Fall When You Hear Marching Band Practicing

Which high school is out practicing their drum core or marching band tonight? The sound is carrying in the cool night air.

Jordan? Hillside? Southern?

I can hear them from inside my house! I'm not complaining! Just curious.

The Pauli Murray Center for History and Social Justice Official Grand Opening is this Sat. 10am-2pm.

They'll finally be able to take the \"All of our events are currently virtual\" off the \"ABOUT\" page of the website!

https://www.paulimurraycenter.com/grand-opening

There's an absolutely smashing documentary about Pauli Murray, and you can watch it for free (with ads) on Freevee.

"Overlooked by history, Pauli Murray was a legal trailblazer whose ideas influenced RBG’s fight for gender equality and Thurgood Marshall’s civil rights arguments. This is a portrait of their impact as a non-binary Black luminary: lawyer, activist, poet, and priest who transformed our world. "

I play bass, I wanna play in a band!

Love playing heavy metal like pentagram, sabbath (Dio and Ozzy), and punk stuff too! I have my own gear, no place we could practice, but I want to play badass music with cool people consistently. Ultimately, doing shows here and there would be super cool.

Any pc repair recommendations in the area?

Having some pc trouble and after multiple fixes I’m still stumped. I took it to geek squad but it’s $150 to check it in. Does anyone know of any reliable pc repair places in the area (Chapel Hill, Cary as well, etc.) that are cheaper?

I would argue things are not “so much better”

https://www.dukechronicle.com/article/2024/04/duke-university-fraternity-east-campus-houses-neighborhood-listserv-trinity-park-trinity-heights-good-neighbor

the video is from March. it involves the Frat party buses that charge (up to $20-$30 a head) and drive out to Alamamce field, et al. they’re picked up and later dropped off after hours; drunk and left to their own devices.

the unaffiliated / derecognized r/Duke Greek Life no longer need to buy nor rent off campus houses. the wealth of their parents’ allows them to rent units in luxury apartment buildings downtown so they can hide behind the bylaws of corporate property management companies. my community (some young professionals) has a majority population of Duke undergrad. most of them, as they have admitted to me, are unaffiliated Greek Life (predominately sororities).

however unfortunate, parts of it are very much legal. until you have 7 buses with 1,000 students double parked on a two way street, drinking in public (legal on some Durham streets but not for minors which some of them are), picking them up late at night, and driving off to party in an undisclosed location only to bring them back at 1AM to drive off, UBER or take an evening stroll on the train tracks.

i understand this is not breaking news. other than breaking a lease, can anyone provide insight on how to remedy the trash, partying, assault, and degradation of a neighborhood? they are a privileged public nuisance. based on what i’ve seen, all that ever happens is a news article every 2 years about assault and arrests resulting in charges dropped because their parents can afford to pay anyone off.

Help finding troll artist

I’m wondering if anyone can help me find an artist/vendor that was at the State Fairgrounds in the early 2000s.

They had a large table set up with small troll wizard figurines. Little magical creatures. The one I had as a kid had a big coarse mustache, a tiny broom made of twigs, a pointy wizard’s hat, and a cloak. He was hunched over and about the size of a mango. The whole vibe was very earthy, like they were little woodland creatures hiding in the forest.

I don’t have the figurine anymore but I’d love to find one! Does anyone have a memory of this artist or know where I could find them?

places that re-use intact cardboard boxes?

Are there any local business that take donations of cardboard boxes that have been used to ship items already, but are still intact and clean and in good condition? I hate recycling perfectly good cardboard after a single use!

All hail Poetry Fox!

https://9thstreetjournal.org/2024/09/04/poetry-fox-named-durhams-new-poet-laureate/

"The City of Durham has appointed Chris Vitiello, also known as the Poetry Fox, as its new poet laureate.

As previously reported by The 10th Street Journal, the poet laureate serves as an ambassador to promote public appreciation of poetry and literature. They are responsible for reading poetry at public events, promoting literature in the community and developing educational opportunities for residents.

The city received 16 applications from local and regional poets. A panel of community members, writers, educators and city staff recommended Vitiello. The Durham Cultural Advisory Board endorsed the recommendation during its June meeting, and Vitiello was officially appointed at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

As the Poetry Fox, Vitiello writes custom poems on demand at dozens of events each year (usually wearing a fox costume). He has taught in K-12 schools, university master of fine arts programs and corporate and community settings. He has curated exhibits at the Ackland Art Museum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, The Carrack and The Fruit.

Vitiello’s three-year tenure as the poet laureate will be themed “Poems Everywhere” and will include free writing workshops, a public reading series and a program that features poems in public spaces.

“How do you connect people to poetry and grow their appreciation for the medium? You write poems right in front of them. You write poems about them, their lives, the people and places and things they love and know and long for,” Vitiello said.

Vitiello is Durham’s second poet laureate, succeeding D.J. Rogers, who served from 2022 to 2024. More information about the poet laureate program is available on the city’s website."

Water Heater Repair Recs SE Durham

Pretty much title. I’m looking for a recommendation for someone affordable to come out and take a look at my water heater. Pilot light is out but I couldn’t get it reignited. No smell or sound of gas when I was trying to light it…

Thanks!

Looking for co2 for my kegerator

Hello everyone! I was hoping there might a fellow brewer that knows somewhere in Durham to fill up my co2 canisters for my kegerator. I used to go to bull city home brew but sadly they shutdown a couple weeks ago. My alternative is Atlantic brew supply but that ends up being about an hour round trip that I would like to avoid if possible. Thanks in advance!

I've cleaned up over 2,300 pounds of litter around Durham in the last 2 months!

This is the first time in my life I’ve felt like what I’m doing actually matters to the world and I need help to keep doing it!

TLDR: I want to clean up litter full-time and I’m hoping to partner with local businesses to make it happen - but I need help finding folks to partner with!

Long Version: I recently started a 501c3 nonprofit called “The Trash Plan,” where I clean up litter at nature spots and post videos on social media. I have 26,000+ followers on Instagram so far and am working on growing my YouTube channel. But it’s sadly not enough to pursue brand deals yet.

Right now, I need to find a way to make this a full-time job. I’m burnt out from juggling both the nonprofit and my 9-5. I’ve tried selling shirts and asking for donations, but it’s not enough to quit my job (and it honestly feels inauthentic to do it). And nonprofit grants take so much bureaucracy to qualify for its almost not worth trying.

I only need about $40k/year to survive, so I’m thinking about partnering with local businesses to either:

A. Sponsor litter cleanups (e.g., they donate $100, and I pick up 100 lbs of litter in their name, which is tax-deductible).

B. Pay me to clean up litter around their business regularly (not tax-deductible, just a service).

Does anyone have ideas on where to start or know any local businesses that might be interested? I’m also open to any other ideas yall might have!

ALSO - I’m doing my first small group cleanup at the Ledge Rock Boat Ramp of Falls Lake this Saturday from 9-12am - if anyone wants to join just DM me! I’ll have enough gear for about 25 people (only have about 5-10 people confirmed to be there so far!)

Where to park a motorcycle long term?

Looking to buy a motorcycle soon, but my apartment complex doesn’t allow more than one vehicle per occupant.

Are there any good places to park a motorcycle long term? I’ve seen recommendations for storage units but I want to make sure it’s allowed

Interior design + organizer who can help with furniture placement

I'm still struggling with arranging furniture and organizing my space after moving into a townhouse over year ago. I have multiple issues with this: Not only do I not have an "eye" for design, but I struggle with ADHD, then go into avoidance mode. My old furniture is just crammed into rooms, and now I'm overwhelmed. I don't need high-end interior design (well, I might need it but can't afford lol) and I don't need a professional organizer to help with kitchen shelves and such. I just need a kind and non-judgmental professional who can help me start to enjoy the space.

I've searched both this sub and the Triangle sub because I thought I saw a post like this some time back, but cannot find now.

So appreciate this sub and all the kindness I've witnessed thus far. Thank you!

Window Tint

General question for everyone

Does dark tint on cars matter to you?

Like do you think people should not be allowed to have dark tint. If so why?

I think of it like a house.. You wouldn’t want your house lights on at night with every blind and curtain open.(although some people do it)

Same applies for cars we pay for in my opinion

Edit: it doesn’t make sense that people can have 10,000 megawatt high beams, but we can’t have dark window tint to defend against it
