I've been through three groups now playing yo-yo. (r/deaf doesn't allow sign language 🤔)
I have motor difficulties,I take a bsl class,I'm deaf/hard of hearing.
I've screwed up my dominant side, what can I do?
I know it's frowned upon to modify signs.
I just had a one on one tutorial with my BSL teacher to prepare for my Unit 103 assessment. He said I had been doing well but I needed to work on using my placement signs and facial expressions more.
Now placement signs is just me remembering and I can work on that fine with practice. But being autistic, facial expressions can be difficult. They don’t come naturally to me. Generally I have to put in effort to think specifically about what my face should be doing. But when I’m focusing so hard on signing correctly I forget to use my face.
Does anyone else, perhaps who is autistic and learning BSL, have any advice on how to do it easier? Because it’s something I struggle with.
In my new job, I've had two customers who were clearly lip reading (one signed me "thank you", confirming my suspicion!), and a third showing me text on their phone to say they lip read. I would love any tips from those with hearing loss about how I could best serve my customers like yourselves. I've chosen to learn BSL so I can be more inclusive on the occasions this happens, as it may make it easier if there is an emergency especially as I'm likely to be the only BSL person on site as I highly doubt most of my colleagues even know a second language.
Some thoughts/questions:
Again, I'm not trying to patronise, but be inclusive :)
I am so paranoid posting this, hopefully I have come across in a good way :)
hiya! i’m fully hearing but i’ve always been interested in bsl! in the past ive taught myself how to sign the alphabet, but ive always wanted to expand my ability to sign, but i haven’t really been able to find any good resources. however i do have a minor form of social anxiety so inperson classes, although i know would be the best, wouldn’t be one of my first options for learning bsl. does anyone know any good free resources for learning vocab and grammar? thanks!
I don't mean a sign name per se, but I want to explain the origin of my sign name as a nickname for me based (phonetically) on my given name.
