Bryson City Trip

Iā€™m planning my sisters bachelorette party, itā€™s coming up in the next couple weeks. I still have some gaps in our itinerary. She would really love to go tubing, but they donā€™t do tubing after Labor Day Iā€™m assuming because it starts to get too cold. Any ideas what else we could do in the afternoon mid September in Bryson City???

Bro I found your trout hankie

I know the title of the post is strange šŸ˜‚ Plz bear with me. My family and I visited Bryson City in July and road the railroad. When we stopped for lunch, I left the group and walked along the river until it came to a dead end. Cool. As I turned around and headed back the way I had come, I passed a young man (teen to 20s) loaded down with fishing equipment. We mutually nodded hello. Much farther along the walk I stumbled across a wadded up ball of fabric. As the railroadā€™s whistle was sounding, I snatched it off the ground. They were leaving and I was the last soul onboard. When I sat down, I spread out the fabric to discover a BEAUTIFUL handkerchief with various species of trout. I realized the young man must have dropped it on his walk. šŸ˜© I love it. šŸ˜ I would love to keep it as a memento of our trip. My husband loves to fish and I planned to bring it home as a ā€œthoughtful gift.ā€ šŸ«£ But alas, my heart knows better. Iā€™m guessing the handkerchief was a present to the young man from a loved one and it would be wrong to keep it. So I am attempting to find its owner. If everyone could share this on FB or social media, Iā€™d love to return it to the young man. Iā€™ll mail it back once I confirm who the rightful owner is. We had a blessed trip in Bryson City, I made so many amazing memories with my elderly father that I will forever cherishā€¦..I hope returning this handkerchief will be one more experience him and I can share. Thanks!

Good Buyer's Agent for a Cabin?

We fell in love with Bryson City when we had a cabin Thanksgiving there a few years back and are interested in a vacation home there. Can anyone recommend a buyer's agent who knows the ins and outs of second-home buyers from out of state?

TIA!

planning trip here!

Hey yall! My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Bryson City in March. Looking around at rentals and a lot discuss needing AWD or 4WD vehicles to drive the roads to rentals and such. Just wanting to get an idea of the terrain and if that type of vehicle is a must.. Thanks in advance!

Letā€™s perk up this sub

I moved to Bryson City about 3 years ago and absolutely love it here. Iā€™ve visited many businesses and many outdoor locations both in and out of the Park, but I canā€™t help feeling that Iā€™m missing some hidden gems that only long time locals know about. Anyone willing to throw out some ideas?

Iā€™m also looking for groups in town that have similar interests, maybe a book club or a walking group or just about anything else (investing, puzzles, world events, local sports) Iā€™m quite unsure how to find these groups, if they exist.

Personally Iā€™ve found the Facebook groups for Bryson City to be full of complainers and long time residents lamenting the fact that the city has changed over the past 50 years.

Apologies in advance if Iā€™ve violated and rules for this sub.

Does anyone know of Airbnbs or cabins that are on a lake and have hiking trails within walking distance?

Mosquitos in July?

Hello all,

Iā€™m planning a trip to explore the natural beauty of Bryson City and the surrounding area in July. Are mosquitoā€™s typically a big issue in the summer? We were wondering if itā€™s worth postponing a few months.

Thanks!

High Crime Rates in Bryson?

I was looking at a possible trip to Bryson in the summer months, but various websites that compile crime data make it seem like it's a very high crime area for both property crimes and violent crimes.

Is there any truth to this?

Trip in late April ?

Planning a friend's trip last week of April. We'll be fishing mainly, exploring towns (definitely the brewery) and doing a little bit of hiking. My question is how is the weather? Too cold ? Also at night time in Bryson city ? Our airBnB is at 4,500 elevation so imagine it will be cold up there at night. Also any must fishing spots would be appreciated! (Non-fly fisher) Looking forward to meeting your town.

Howā€™s the weather in September?

My girlfriend and I are looking at going to Bryson City in September. We will rent a cabin through AIRBNB but Iā€™m curious what to expect weather wise so we will be able to pack properly. Also looking for things to do while there. I saw itā€™s the gateway to the smoky mountains but not entirely sure what all there is to do there. Any help and tips would be appreciated.

looking for info on this jug or the shop it was sold in

Hi! I have been looking for this specific jug for a while now, and found out it was pictured in a Bryson City co-op shop in 2016 or 2017. I believe it has closed now, and the author of the image says it was made by a local artist. Does anyone know anything about this shop, or who to ask to find out more?

The attached image contains the info given by the person who took the picture.

Thanks in advance !

Kid-friendly activities!

Hello! A friend and I are visiting Bryson City soon for a girls weekend with our daughters who are 4 and 6. Looking for recommendations for this time of year! Iā€™ve seen a few waterfalls close to the road and the aquarium. Would love some short hike recommendations, places to see Elk, kid-friendly and vegetarian friendly restaurants, good shops and coffee shops downtown! Thanks!

Living in Bryson or the general area? So we are planning on moving to somewhere in WNC.

What to expect? We are coming from a larger city of 250k people with pretty much everything we could need or want with in a few miles of home (except any decent outdoor activities) Tired of that and looking to slow down a bit on some acreage but still want to be able to go out for dinner after 8 PM. We work from home so daily work travel is a non issue.

Friend bailed on our trip so now I am solo

Originally a friend was going to accompany me on a trip to Bryson and the park but after non refundable payments were made he bailed. I'm nervous about being alone for a week, any advice on activities to do that are helpful to meet people?

Bryson City family history & ancestry

Hello everyone!

Iā€™m a genealogist & I am trained in discovering local North Carolina family lineages and stories through vital records, census records, and newspapers.

This is the interest form I put together for anyone interested in learning more about their personal North Carolina family history. I create family trees, ancestral maps, and historical road trip itineraries based on YOUR personal family history! Itā€™s a great way to connect with your heritage and wonderful knowledge pass down to future generations.

LINK TO INTEREST FORM: Family History Interest Form

Here are some things you can discover from my research:

  • Newspaper articles about your ancestors (Crime? Scandal? Who knows!)
  • Custom ancestral mapping showing your approximate ethnic admixture
  • Most common causes of death in your family history
  • United States migration mapping showing how your ancestors migrated throughout the country
  • Your great-great-great grandparentsā€™ names
  • Most popular professions and careers in your family history
  • Photographs of your ancestors you have never seen before (Found in Newspaper archives, I have subscriptions to several newspaper websites)

I have a degree in Anthropology and have spent several years working for a professional genealogy company. I have been working as an individual genealogist for about 6 years. If you have any questions about my research, please fill out an interest form or email: heritagehuntersgenealogy@gmail.com

For those of you with ancestry outside of North Carolina, please send me a message. Iā€™d be happy to help you or direct you to a better suited genealogist. Thanks!

Going to Bryson in a few weeks wanted some advice

Originally posted on r/NorthCarolina but it was removed immediately

(Obviously this is a throwaway as my fiancƩ follows my main)

Hello, my fiancƩ and I are going to Bryson and Topton in a couple weeks to celebrate their 21st birthday.

I wanted to know if there were any things to do in the area outside of what we currently plan on doing.

Which is:

Train ride in Bryson City

Going to a couple restaurants in Topton and Bryson

Seeing Cherokee on our way out (we live in Tennessee)

Iā€™m 20 so I cannot drink any alcohol.

Is there any inexpensive (under $100) things to do?

We love motor trails if there are any as well.

Thank you.

Veto Override vote for Monster Abortion Ban Tuesday 5/16 - Pack the house

The veto override votes have been scheduled in both house and Senate Tomorrow, Tuesday 5/16.

Calls to action for now until tomorrow :

Contact these four folks and beg them to not strip us of our basic right to bodily Autonomy.

Rep. John Bradford: 919-733-5828 Rep. Tricia Cotham: 919-733-5749 Rep. Ted Davis: 919-733-5786 Sen. Michael Lee: 919-715-2525

We're not sharing a script and encouraging folks to be kind, but honest, about their opposition. Tell your abortion story if it feels safe.

Call to action for Tuesday: If you can, arrive at NCGA by 3:20 to ensure you can get in, and grab a seat, before 4 PM.

Prepare to be there a while - Don't bring a poster unless your OK leaving it outside the gallery. Water bottles and food is not permitted inside either.

You will be in good company! Make sure the NCGA doesn't pass this thing quietly and without an audience of the very same people who will vote them out.
