Marie Crisis tonight

Hey all, guy from Jersey here,

I had the day off today, so I decided to come explore the city and enjoy the beautiful weather we’re having. I was planning on stopping by Marie’s Crisis tonight for the first time! Anyone have any tips/tricks? I was reading a bunch of posts and feel like there’s a lot of rules and unspoken rules haha. I’m just a guy trying to have a couple drinks on his day off and listen some showtunes. Any tips help! Thanks yall!

Edit: definitely doing the pre-show and not the post-show crowd. Anywhere from 4-9ish

October legacy bills available to trade

I have a lot of extras of my legacy bills from October and trying to reach a bigger audience for my trades. I'm desperately searching for the 1960s Outsiders, but I'm happy to trade for anything I don't have. Please let me know if anything grabs your attention!

Drop your October Playbill hauls!!

I’m shocked I managed to see all these shows in October (excluding Hadestown)! Feel free to use this thread to trade, as well!

Personally speaking, does anyone have an extra of the 1970’s Color Hadestown Playbill OR the 1970’s color Romeo + Juliet Playbill? These are the only two I’m missing!

The Notebook or Suffs?

My uncle said he'd buy me two tickets to a Broadway show for Christmas. Originally, I was going to see Suffs since it's closing and I haven't seen it yet, but I'm debating now. I've seen The Notebook twice now and it's hands down my favorite musical ever, so I'd love to see it again before it closes. But I have a feeling that if I don't take the chance to see Suffs now, that I'll never get to see it. So I'm very conflicted. (And yes, I know The Notebook is closing before Christmas, obviously I'd see it before it closes if that's what I choose)

You cannot miss Ragtime at NYCC!!!!

My first time seeing the show and I cannot stop thinking about it since last night and I have already purchased a ticket to see it again!!!

The best show I have seen in a while. Such an incredibly powerful and moving story (that is unfortunately still relevant) with a majestic score. I teared up so many times and would recommend you to bring some tissues. I always complain about long shows and also shows with too many characters/storylines, but with ragtime, time just flew by and i was so invested in every single character that I wish the story could’ve been fleshed out more! I went in blind but the story was very easy to follow.

Set was minimal as it usually is at NYCC but it worked perfectly.

And this cast omg! Loved loved loved Brandon Uranowitz’s performance, he was the standout for me personally. Caissie and Joshua were amazing and I am in love with Ben Levi Ross’s voice.

I stagedoored afterwards and many of the cast came out to sign!

Seeing this show was so special and you really cannot miss this!!!

I will say my only complaint is that because there are so many characters and stories going on, some parts of the plot felt like it was cut short and I wish there were more details!

Sunset Blvd review

My review of Sunset Blvd (seen on Halloween!) I went into the show not having watched the movie, didnt see the previous musical version with Glenn Close and really didn’t know any of the songs. I knew the basic premise of the show and I knew the skit from The Carol Burnett Show. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣 I can’t compare it to anything which I think is good. It’s a very stripped down show that relies on the actors, their voices , the creative lighting, steady cam cameras, live video on the screen in the back of stage and a total black & white esthetic- all used to dramatic and an effective effect. It took me more than a minute to get “into” the show bc I couldn’t understand the lyrics at first - which were setting up the story (but that may have been a me thing but I do suggest knowing something about the story before going to see it otherwise it may be confusing). There were several times where the audience laughed heartedly and I was like “it wasn’t THAT funny” but that was just me. There was a wink to Nicole’s previous life (IYKYK) and definitely some other humorous lines and “winks” to the original and other stuff. The lead male actor, Tom Francis, is excellent and deserving of awards that will probably come his way. But Nicole Scherzinger. Wow! Her voice - so clean, so powerful, just amazing. And she is a very good dancer too.. she deserves all the awards. What do they say? It’s a tour de force performance? Incredible. She got two standing ovations during the show for her showstopper powerful songs. My only real critique is that the character Nora Desmond is supposed to be much older fading actress and well Nicole is very much not old not even middle aged- so that was a little distracting but that being said… it doesn’t have to follow the original exactly. Creative license? (To add: I read one review that said this show was supposed to be about a silent movie actress who wasn’t able to transition to “talkies” when they came about). If you like theatre and open minded to different interpretations of classic theatre/shows I would definitely recommend. Also, this WILL win awards. Regarding seating- I sat first row balcony right off center and it was perfect! Dont sit too far off to the side bc you want to be able to see the movie screen in the back of the stage. Also, go to the box office, if you can, to buy tickets so you don’t pay that like $12 ticket fee. Also, fyi -look at what performances Nicole will be out (I think she skips Tuesday nights)

Harry Potter Lottery - Upgrade Possible?

I won the Friday Forty lottery seat. I won it before, a few years ago, and the tickets were a little uncomfortable (side mezz). This time I'm bringing my girlfriend and I'm worried she'll think they're too uncomfortable to make it the full length of the play. Do you think, if this were the case, I could pay the box office the difference in price to upgrade our seats? I just looked and there are PLENTY of seats still available in the theater for our performance.

Anyone want to swap legacy playbills?

I am looking for two from Sunset Blvd - the one with the yellow PLAYBILL logo on top, and the 70s one.

I am looking for the 50s Moulin Rouge one.

I am looking for the 30s Chicago one.

I have an extra our town, left on tenth, multiple from back to the future and the notebook, and all from maybe happy ending to swap!

Sunday 11/3 in NYC - travel disruptions due to Marathon?

Hi everyone. This is my first post here, so I apologize if it's not the right place for this question. I am coming in from out of state on Sunday to see the 2pm production of Ragtime at NYCC. I have a several-hour bus ride in and just saw that the NY Marathon is also taking place on Sunday and that it could cause travel disruptions in and around the city. I have the choice to take a bus that arrives in the early morning instead of the late morning, so I'm seeking advice from seasoned NYers about what I should do. I'm traveling solo because I splurged on a very expensive orchestra ticket and usual Broadway friends didn't want to pay such a high cost to tag along (I considered this a OIAL opportunity to see this cast unless the show actually does transfer). Should I expect any other areas around where NYCC is located to be inaccessible or backed up due to the marathon or spectators? I did look at the marathon map and see that all of the 60th St area of the Park will be blocked. I just want to be sure I make the best decisions, timing wise, for everything I do Sunday leading up to the show. Any advice you can offer would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Which broadway theatre do you think has the most beautiful interior?

For me, it has got to be the Belasco. The murals. The Tiffany lamps! The pastel color palette in the restrooms.

Show Recs

I'm going to be in Brooklyn in two weeks for a work trip and want to go see a show while I'm there. I'm not really big into Jukebox Musicals (although I did see and love Moulin Rouge last time - Aaron Tveit, duh).

I love theater and especially enjoy getting to see iconic performances. I'm thinking about:

*Romeo + Juliet *Death Becomes Her *Suffs *Maybe Happy Ending *Shit. Meet. Fan. *Cabaret

What would you prioritize seeing? I probably will only have one night free and won't be back in NY until next year. Thanks!

Famous actors seeing a play and backstage

How does this work?

Is a celebrities visit to the theater normally announced ahead of time and they know they are coming so they are invited backstage or do celebrities ask to go backstage.

I would imagine you would have to be very recognizable for this to work.

For example there are fairly famous/rich people in bands or entertainment that you wouldn’t necessarily recognize on the street if they had a hat on but would they just let them stroll on backstage to say hi to the cast?

Just wondering how this works…

People who tend to prefer straight plays over musicals, what are some of your favorite musicals?

I was just curious if people who like plays more might tend to gravitate towards similar musicals.

Mini reviews of shows from my recent NY trip

Hey all, I came back from a NY vacation not too long ago, which included by first time seeing Broadway shows, so I thought I'd do some mini reviews if it'd help anyone decide what to see! In no particular order:

- Maybe Happy Ending: Very cute, I liked this one, with amazing performances especially from Darren Criss. I saw it in the first week of previews so they might tighten it a bit, but at times it felt somewhat forced? They're both supposed to be robots but a couple of the interactions between Oliver and Claire felt a robot and a human. I think it's because Oliver is an earlier model than Claire so she has more "human" qualities, but I think if some of the book was reworked it would come across as more authentic. Nevertheless I enjoyed it and thought it was quite touching overall.

7.5/10

- Romeo+Juliet: My most expensive ticket this trip so I had high hopes. It was good, but I don't think it really added anything to the story/the performances to justify the price, aside from the leads names. I also don't know wtf the promo for this show (the "youth are fucked" posters and teddy bears) has anything to do with the show. Rachel Zegler sings briefly and she has a great voice. Both her and Kit Connor give good performances and I was actually quite happy to see this was in the original Shakespearean language and not Tiktokified like the promo led me to think. Don't regret seeing it, but a bit meh.

6.5/10.

- Moulin Rouge: I saw this twice, once with Aaron/Jojo and then with John/Solea. I posted a full review on it (because I had a lot of thoughts) so I won't repeat it here, but I'll rate each show separately because I did prefer the second over the first.

AJ 6/10

JS 7/10

- The Great Gatsby: I'm a big fan of the book so I was excited for this, and I do love a good set and costumes. I'm annoyed I missed out on the Florence Welch version though because I love her music. So definitely A+ on set and costumes, no complaints. I thought the songs were fun but so incredibly generic. The show itself felt very generic and AI generated in a way - just no thought put into creating a quality score/book with the many ideas present in the original text. Good vocals from Jeremy Jordan but he seemed really miscast as Gatsby in my opinion, he just didn't have that mysteriousness or charm I was hoping for. Eva Noblezada had good vocals at times, but her voice did seem to strain in some parts. I also thought she was miscast as Daisy because she just seemed like too bold of a presence, not the soft but cunning sort of character Daisy is. Best performance was Noah J Ricketts as Nick. Overall it wasn't a terrible show, but I do think it's bordering on below average.

5/10

- Stereophonic: After hearing so many good things about this show I decided to check it out, and I really enjoyed it. Do I think it dragged at times? Yes. I was getting a bit fidgety in some portions but I do think it added to the viewing in a sort of immersive way, if that makes sense. It almost didn't feel like I was watching a Broadway show, but actually peeking into a band's life behind the scenes. I do still think it can be trimmed by 15-20 minutes without sacrificing that feeling. Love the music, very well written and crafted.

8.5/10

- Suffs: I really wanted to love this show but unfortunately it just didn't hit for me. I appreciate the thought behind it and all it was trying to achieve, but it did feel very girlbossy and whitewashed at times. I enjoyed some of the songs- others felt like an afterthought. I honestly wouldn't have given it the Tony for Best Score, but I thought the book was good for what it wanted to be, which was a welcome surprise, since most of the shows I saw are let down by below average books. But yeah, on paper this seems like a show I'd love but it's just too surface level for me.

5.5/10

- Back to the Future: I was expecting a good time and nothing else from this show, and it delivered. Fun but generic songs and a mediocre book, but the effects are incredible and I did enjoy myself a lot. It's not a deep show by any means but I also don't think it's trying to be that. I forgot about it almost immediately except the set design but I had a really great time while I saw it, so that counts for something.

7/10

- Death Becomes Her: This was the last show I saw on my trip. I love the movie so I decided to check this out. Firstly, some great effects and I did laugh a lot. The score is okay, not bad but wasn't particularly interesting to me. The performances, effects, set design, etc all came together to make this a good show. There are parts to tighten though, for example I thought it was kind of obvious when they used body doubles so it took me out of the illusion at times. But it's very campy and fun, not a must watch for me but if you have the time then worth checking out.

6.5/10
