Ticket to Three Houses

Hey everyone! Sorry for the late notice, but unfortunately I am unable to make my performance of Dave Malloy’s Three Houses. The show is at 2. Would anyone like the ticket? Front row aisle seat.

Got a last minute ticket to Illinoise. I've listened to the album before, but I don't know it very well. Would the show have a greater impact if I listen to it again before going (to get a better grasp of the lyrics)?

Who's your favorite actor and why? For example-

My favorite actor is easily Alex Brightman. He is absolutely hilarious while acting and has in my opinion vocal cords of still with such a unique and strong voice, while also being a great guy (from what i've seen in things like interviews, live streams, podcasts, ext.).

Anyways you guys?

Hell’s Kitchen Rush Report 5/15

Got to the box office at 8:20 and was fifth in line. By 9:30, there was probably 15-20, with 30+ when the box office opened at 10. I was offered 2 partial view rush tickets in seats directly behind each other in the far orchestra. It looked like there weren’t many (or any) rush seats together for either show today. Hope this helps!

Thoughts on Hairspray touring?

I’ve got a new teenage theatre fan in the house and while I like good music and performances I really don’t know a lot about a lot of shows. We’ve only seen phantom, MJ, lion king, and Hamilton and enjoyed them all. I saw Hairspray was coming through and was wondering how that would be going in blind?

Best current shows on and off Broadway?

What are the best shows on and off Broadway right now? The last post I saw asking this was from 5 months ago and many of those shows have already closed so I'm starting a new thread. I am dying to see Oh Mary! and I just saw Merrily We Roll Along which was fabulous.

Playing Broadway Roulette for August. Any guesses on what show (matinee) I'll get out of these options?

  1. &Juliet
  2. Aladdin
  3. Back to the Future
  4. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child
  5. MJ: The Musical
  6. The Heart of Rock and Roll
  7. The Lion King
  8. Wicked

I crossed off Hadestown, and Illinoise doesn't have a matinee the day we're going.

I know everyone craps on Aladdin and says that what you'll get if it's not eliminated -- but since we're doing the family-friendly option with kids, I'd be content with that choice (the only one I'm hoping against is "The Heart of Rock and Roll").

Looking for a good show for a date night in June.

Looking for a food show for a date night in June. We are not huge broadway people but have seen Evan, Hamilton, Mormon, wicked, being New Yorkers we’ve also seen the long running ones Lion King, Aladdin etc, not looking for something Disney or geared towards families if you know what I mean. No MJ.

Stereophonic is up my ally but have tix to that for a later date.

I know this is vague and maybe dismissive and don’t mean it that way at all. Just looking for something that will be good for us.

Thanks!

Merrily We Roll Along line/staging questions

Am I remembering wrong or does Frank say the line “Most important city in the most important country” line from The Blob at some point in the current Broadway show? Also, looking at the Revival libretto, it looks like after “Franklin Shepherd, Inc.”, directions call for what looks to be a slightly more physical fight between Charley and Frank and I don’t remember them doing it that way? Or did Frank really send Charley “sprawling to the floor” after he put his hand in his arm? And then did Charley “lunge” at him? I just seem to remember a lot more emphasis on the idea that Frank’s hurt and Charley’s dead to him rather than it turning into more of a physical fight?

Unpopular Opinion: Hated Stereophonic

Can someone please explain this to me? I felt like there was zero plot, minimal character development and that it just dragged on and on and on. Yes the music was beautiful and well done; especially for a play. But for 3+ hours I just do not get the hype 🤷‍♀️

Review of The Outsiders - 5/08. (Positive review)

Pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this one. The storyline is essentially “rich kids beat up on poor kids” a lot, so it’s pandering to the (now insufferable) “eat the rich” bandwagon that has gotten pretty extreme on some fringes, so I was a bit wary of it. However, I would be not at all surprised to hear that it won Best Musical.

The set: Pretty cool. They entire thing appears to take place in a junkyard, with a car that stays onstage the entire time. At times the audience was asked to imagine that the car was a bed or other furniture. When they were at a drive in, they just lifted the hood and put a sign that said “concession stand.” The only time that I was confused was when they >!wanted to portray someone in a hospital, they did it by just putting boards on top of stacked tires. I was confused about where we were. Since it was someone who was in trouble with the law, I thought that they might have been taking care of him in someones shed or something. You were supposed to understand it was a hospital by his clothing I guess, but that wasn’t clear enough for me until later dialogue.!< Also, the stage was covered with faux gravel. Definitely a cool effect, but I wondered if the front row was just a big splash zone. Also most of the actors were wearing pants, but not all! The spin on the knees…ouch.

Choreo: They absolutely deserved their nom here. There are a lot of fight scenes, which I am typically not a fan of, but they did a great job. I don’t know if I would ever describe a fight scene as beautiful but here we are. They were masterfully choreographed, and tight. Some of the other dance scenes were innovative and interesting, particularly the one with >!boards spinning around in the church!<. I can’t overstate how excellent I thought it was. The rumble itself was also a piece of choreographic art, and the entire cast was in lockstep during it. It was well done. I will say, one moment during the rumble reminded me powerfully of the apex of the Sleep No More orgy. Let me know if anyone else thought same or if I’m just nuts.

Lighting: I would not be surprised if they win lighting, though I haven’t seen Illinoise. It was absolutely a strong part of the storytelling, especially with the fighting/blackout scenes. I loved when they let you know you were at train tracks, with no change to the set, but a spotlight ripped across the stage and train sound effects. It was a joy to observe how they used lighting.

Score There is one moment in Great Expectations that much of the greasers come on with absolutely spine-tingling harmonies. My first thought was “this is why you go to a live show”. That moment was simply delicious, and it is very much worth seeing live. It’s hard to imagine that the moment could hit you like that on a recorded piece of media. That said, I did not walk out of there with any particular desire to hear any of the songs again. Even the “great expectations” reprise disappointed me - they just sang “great expectations” over and over again and I deeply wanted them to have some kind of impactful line in there instead. Given how powerful the rest of the show is, I’m probably missing out. If people want to tell me what their favorite songs are from that show, I’ll give it a listen.

Costumes: Fine, not much to say here.

Book: Fine? I was neither impressed nor disappointed, and I didn’t notice it while I was watching the show, so probably fine. I wished that the older brother character had been a little stronger (or at least I wish they’d punched it a bit more when >!he showed up at the rumble, because that was a pivotal moment for that character!<). I also wasn’t invested in Dallas’s arc. >!given recent politics, I did think it wise for them to for change his suicide to “jumping in front of a train” instead of “death by cop”, as it was in the novel!<. These are sort of nitpicks though. I wasn’t a fan of the narration, but it grew on me, especially the way it was used during the fight scenes.

Vocals: The person who made me sit up in my seat was Brett Comer/Darrel Curtis. I remember feeling meh on the lead, Brody Grant.

Set, but with spoilers. >!Wow! I was beyond surprised to see all of that fire on stage. That was raw and powerful. I was later a bit less surprised to see the rain during the rumble (If they are doing that kind of pyrotechnics they are probably required to have a big sprinkler, right?). I loved the effect of the rain during the rumble. At some point, I lost track of who was a greaser and who was a Soc because it got harder to tell in the dim and the rain. I think that was probably the point. Anyway, this definitely meets the criteria of a spectacle, and I would be happy to send broadway first-timers here.!<

Bechdel test?: Haahhahaha no.

Did I think about it a lot after?: I’ve started evaluating shows this way since A Slave Play and Lempicka, both of which I thought about and talked about a lot. It’s not a show that I am yearning to see again, and it didn’t bring up anything for my mind to chew on later.

Overall I would consider it one of the stronger shows this season, and it’s on my recommendation list for the “what should I see” posts. I’m glad I saw it, but I’m not super interested in seeing it again (if I see a show and love it, I drag my theater-tolerating fiance there). My fiance will probably not see this one. Probably neither here nor there - do with that what you will.

Straight Plays Turned into Movies

Other than The Boys in the Band and American Son, do you know of any of straight plays that have been turned into movies with the same cast as the Broadway play?

I’m not looking for pro shots or musical but just straight up plays please :)

Mobile chargers allowed in theater (Chicago)

I’m seeing death becomes her tomorrow and I want to know if I can take one of those portable chargers for my phone into the theater? I don’t know how strict they are and I’d rather not part with it. I could find any info on the Cadillac Palace Theatre’s website so any insight/personal experience yall have would be great. Thank you!

Interested in getting rush tickets in a few weeks. Tips?

So I’m going on vacation for my birthday with a family member. We wanted to see a show and were torn on Back to the Future and Harry Potter. We bought great Harry Potter tickets and decided we would try for rush tickets for Back to the Future. I like theater but don’t consider myself a ‘theater nerd’ so I don’t know exactly what to prepare for. We want to see Bttf on the Friday during the trip.

What time should we arrive at the box office? Would we have a good chance at getting seats together or would we be separated? Are rush tickets any good? Will we be able to see the stage? Is Bttf worth seeing? (We love the movies!) Anything else I should know? Any tips or tricks?

Bttf is at the Winter Garden Theater if that helps… TIA! :>

Another Stereophonic seating question

Trying to figure out how to spend the least amount of money without completely obstructing my view (excuse my shitty art project)…

Am I ok doing Orchestra K/L 9 or 10 (the red circles)? Those are the second seats from the outside aisle. Or is it worth $40 more to go back in the purple circles to M/N 9 or 10 or anywhere from O-S 5 or 6 more centered?

I know the answer is probably gonna be further back and more centered but I just can’t get over the $59 seats (but I know there’s a reason why they’re $59)

PSA: Lempicka is close to sold out for all remaining days, so if you wanted to see it I recommend buying now

Basically title. I know people are used to Lempicka being an easy rush (and some seats are still reserved for rush I'm sure). I don't actually know anything about it. But there aren't many seats left on any days, so if you wanted to try and see it (and I recommend it!), you might want to buy now.

Is there a musical about zodiac signs?

Does anyone know if there's a musical whose story focuses on zodiac signs or astrology? I figured there's a musical for everything lol

I tried to google music and zodiac signs but I can only find posts that are like "what musical should you watch based on your zodiac sign!" which btw, is NOT what i'm looking for.

Death Becomes Her rush tickets?

Anyone had a chance to try for rush tickets for Death Becomes Her in Chicago? Any luck? See there are plenty of seats available for tomorrow night so was thinking about asking for rush tickets an hour before curtain but not sure if they offer it.

Gatsby stage too high?

I'm taking my daughter who loves Jeremy Jordan to see this show. We are deciding between 2nd row center orchestra (normally we would love these seats especially since there's nobody in front of us in the center in row A, but the stage looks HIGH.)

Or Orch row J right or left but on the inside aisle

Or front row mezzanine but we'd have to be toward the side.

Any thoughts are helpful! We want a good view but she doesn't want to be too far from Jeremy, LOL

My main question is how high the stage is and how difficult it is to see from front center orchestra. We are also short.
