I’ll preface I’ve had dogs my whole life. Peaches is without a doubt an absolute terror. We got her the 14th, she’s doing better with her crate training but still cannot stand being alone though. She got sit, stay, drop, and come but will not stay off of things no matter what we try with her training. There’s puppy biting and then there’s Peaches biting, yelp/ignore, redirecting, and hand forcing work marginally and her biting/chewing anything else in the house is nearly unstoppable. If I take her in the back yard she’ll do her thing half the time, but give her a moment of free thought and she immediately gets the zoomies, runs to the mulch bed and takes an absolute chomp of mulch and runs around with it until I run over and pull it out of her mouth then pray until she poops next that she doesn’t have an obstruction. All this being said I love her and would die for her but if anyone has some training tips tailored more towards Brittanys I’ll owe you a beer. Currently trying to follow the Robert Robertson method. Really just venting guys sorry.
Hi everyone, I’m trying to find someone that can help me figure out this “homemade food” thing. I have an 11 year old neutered Brittany Spaniel, he still has puppy energy and loves to exercise. Next year I’m planning on raising quail and home-grown veggies to solely feed my pupper with. However, I’m doing research on how much protein he should have and I’m at a complete loss. What does “protein should be 20% of their diet” mean? I work well with grams and solid measuring numbers like that, but I can’t find anything that explains what 20% means or how many grams of protein I should give him. I’ve been so caught up with that, that I haven’t even gotten to the fruits and veggies part of the meal planning 😭😂
I'm considering neutering my 3-year-old intact male Brittany. I haven't done it yet because I mainly use him for hunting, and I've heard mixed opinions about the procedure. I do have some issues with him marking and being aggressive towards other dogs, which I haven't been able to resolve. Besides that, he is a complete sweetheart and a fantastic family dog. I'm curious to know if anyone has experience with their dogs losing interest or drive to hunt after being neutered. He currently has incredible energy and will hunt all day until he drops.
She did pretty good with a mask on!
Our 11 month old Britt did her first bird hunt over the weekend. She did as expected and loved every minute of it! After two mornings out, she’s a completely different dog. She’s so wiped out, hasn’t eaten much and just wants to sleep. Is this normal? Should I just enjoy it?! 😆 She’s just not her crazy spunky self and apparently we’ve never fully worn her out so just a little worried about her.
He literally runs everywhere he goes.
Turns out, Jessie is scared of ghosts
Our boy Cliff LOVES to chase lizards. Couldn’t care so much about birds. He chased a gecko and apparently got trapped behind the stairs and started whining for his daddy to let him out. Hahahaha I just can’t with him sometimes.
A local rescue group that focuses on rehoming former hunting dogs was doing an "Introduction To Birds" event this weekend.
Basically an experienced handler worked with your dog for about 30 mins. Introduced them to a bird that had its flight feathers removed and then took them through a small course with 4 staged birds to find.
Really cool event, watching our 11mo old put it all together and really come alive was awesome. The expense was minimal and all the money went to a great cause.
I highly recommend check something like this out if you see it near you. Even if you, like me, have absolutely no interest in the "hunting" aspect of our dogs.
Meet Mio, 2.5 years 🌞 he is my first dog and the best pup
a long shot as he's a fairly small breeder, but anyone have any experience with him? located in west michigan.
i'm on the waitlist for one of his spring/summer pups and very excited. i've talked to him on the phone and asked a million questions and everything seemed really good. he's involved in sporting and the american brittany club.
just wanted to know if anyone here has one of his pups and what their thoughts are! thanks!
I have an 11 year old Brittany/springer mix, he’s amazing and so gentle with the cats and children but is an absolute menace towards birds and small critters. I recently got chickens and so far there hasn’t been any incidents but he has tried to go after the rooster when I accidentally left the gate open. I’ve brought him into the coop (on a very short leash) and he sat there shaking watching the birds but didn’t snap at any of them. Am I crazy to think I can train him to not chase chickens? I would never purposely put him into the same yard as them (I have separate fenced areas for them), but it would be nice if I didn’t have to stress so much about a gate being left open.
Before any of you say it, yes I have accepted the fact that I could lose a bird or two to the dog, but there’s tons of other predators out here too so I figured I would have to have a super secure coop even if I didn’t have a dog. I’m much more worried about the dogs safety than losing a bird. I don’t want my dog losing an eye cus he picked a fight with the rooster.
Jessie has always taken care of our kids, starting when they were babies. She treated them like they were puppies. Now, all these years later, I love seeing them together.
