Light recomendations

Looking to add a handful of lights to the front of my boat to make it capable of bow fishing. Is there solid, reliable option out there that doesn’t break the bank?

anybody make a shoot through rod for a compound bow?

I would order one, but they are not available in my area…unless I pay silly shipping charges. So I figured I would ask if anybody has ever made one and would care to share the process

Chinese lever action bows any good?

Well, I’m in the market for another bowfishing bow. I thought trying out a lever bow would be an excellent idea, though there’s no way I’m dropping $600 on a VXM lever bow that’s going to get used and abused in the boat. I saw there were some $265 Chinese knockoff lever bows on Amazon by a company called Sharrow. Anybody have any luck with these or am I just better off not being a penny pincher?

Thanks!

Thinking of starting out bow fishing because of these reasons

Although I've never gone fishing in any form or capacity,

  1. I used to be pretty good at compound-bow archery
  2. I want to eat more fish for health reasons, especially steamed fish
  3. Seafood market fish is too expensive and sometimes not fresh
  4. Need another hobby in retirement

Motivated enough? Or foolish? Don't even know where to go to find fish.

Is it frowned upon or “overkill” to use a 405 fps crossbow for bow fishing?

Bow Fishing rig…..impulse buy

Now I’m a bow fisherman. Now what?

Here are my stats:

I live by lake winnipeg, so I am close to a huge marsh (ish). The marsh is less a marsh these days as opposed to a very shallow set of full time lakes.

I have a bass boat with LED spotlights set up for catfishing at night.

Compound bow, reel, piranha arrow.

I have a spear for my kid to use until he can draw his own bow

I’m figuring that I will arrive at the marsh an hour or so before sunset and cruse through he shallows as it get dark and plan to stay for a few hours after dark. Beyond this very vague set of plans, my only experience with a bow is the blue one I had when I was a kid. Came with 3 wood arrows and real feathers….9.99 at Canadian Tire.

Any advice, opinions, directions and etc is very welcome.

Thanks

Bowfishing lights

I’m looking into setting up a bowfishing rig off my duck boat, has anyone ever used a 7-22” light bar? If so how much visibility are you getting from them

Best bow for big alligator gar

I fish for big gar and I often run into a problem with getting them up the sea wall at lake pontchartrain. It’s basically rough cement stairs that go into the lake. The last few steps are often slick with algae and if the gar thrash enough they will pop my line on the rough steps. I’ve used a gaff hook for years but I’m looking for a better way to bring them up. Was thinking about using a bow fishing set up but not sure where to start or if any bolts could even pierce a big gars armor.

Bow to cast lure?

I never tried bow fishing nor it's possible in my neighborhood. (There's no river with big fishes and fishes are probably too deep or too afraid of boat in the sea) I know that normal fishing is possible as sea trout is caught in local fishery quite often. They also swim in to shallower shore but very rare.

I'm happen to be a target archer. So that got me thinking, can I use a bow to cast lure very far? If I can cast 200m, that would probably reach where bigger fishes are hanging out.

To think out loud, if the lure and the hook is held in a little basket instead of arrow tip, and the arrow is connected to the hook with thinner line and just work as a bobber, and the arrow is ofc connected to whatever the preferred reel, it doesn't sounds too unreasonable to me?

Is there such a thing? Or do I need to jerry-rig out of bow fishing equipment?

Oh one more question, does glass fiber arrows float? Otherwise, Guess I need to cannibalize one of my high spine shaft.

Best option to buy a dedicated bow fishing bow or buy a reel for my food bows

So I know 0% about bow fishing equipment but wondered since I have a good diamond bow and some other cheaper compound bow and recurves if it would be best to buy a reel for those or buy a standalone set

Question !

As I mentioned before regarding bowfishing, I started recuve with #20 limbs. Since then I purchased a #30 and #40 limbs, but triple by-pass last year halted a lot of things. My question is on poundage to use since I'm only going after spotted gar in Texas. The biggest I've seen was 2'-1/2 feet long which is fine with me.

Opinion

I have a recurve bow and to try bowfishing. I have two risers, one bare bone and the other has some hardware. My question is this arrow rest good for bowfishing or do I just bare bone ?

Serious question

I’m going bow fishing for the first time soon. I’m curious, when shooting fish that have a size limit, how can you be sure it’s big enough to shoot? Is it common to shoot undersized fish? Genuine question as I’m sure I’ll run into plenty of sheepshead and mangrove snappers while I’m out hunting for stingrays. I appreciate any feedback.

Muzzy Sabre Lighted Arrow Question

Just purchased two Muzzy Sabre lighted arrows on sale. They are advertised as 5/16” wide, just like standard arrows. However, they are slightly wider than standard bow fishing arrows. They are slightly too wide for AMS safety slides to fit over them. Has anybody found a brand of safety slide that works with these arrows? I don’t want to randomly purchase various safety slides in an attempt to find one that works.
