Film title

I remember watching a few indian movies back then but can't remember their names. Here are some descriptions. Hope someone will help:

1)- Horror type movie in which the male lead is a pandit who has learned exorcism and has earned special powers. He fights a ghost in both physical and metaphorical sense. The story goes starts as him dating a girl, then going back to home to meet his father who is unfortunately falsely accused of assaulting a women and dies. The Male lead then stays there, on the mandir to both exorcise an evil spirit and also to prove his father's innocence. This causes him to lose contact with his gf for about 2 years(I think). And whatever I just said is a flash back he tells his G.F who questions him about leaving.

2)- Crime/thriller type movie. The movie had a place know as city of crimes. The male lead had managed to conquer said city but for some reason(I don't remember) left that life behind to live peacefully. In the end he does go back but mostly to save a girl he met outside. I think the movie name was based on the name of said crime city and it was probably south indian .

I hope someone can help me in names. Thnx

Darr (1993) - A terrifying love story

I happened to see the film after 31 years yesterday (I barely have any memories of when I saw it in the theater except that it gave me nightmares for a while).

Watching it after all this time made me appreciate how slick (relatively) and no nonsense it was for the 90s. No silly comedy (like Baazigar, Gupt etc. which are relatively decent thrillers but add these unnecessary scenes which completely disrupt the flow of the story), minimum lags (they could have cut out two not so grear songs though), an engaging second half and almost no bad performances.

It was an absolutely gorgeous film, even when it revelled in its own craziness. The scene where Shah Rukh draws lipstick marks on an otherwise beautiful picture of Juhi, makes the picture pretty grotesque, sort of symbolic of what Rahul felt for Kiran - it didn't have the purity of love or devotion, it was madness and destruction.

There's so much that I liked:

1.** The Music and background score**: From start to end, barring two songs, Shiv-Hari's album is a treat to the ears and soul (and eyes!). Jaadu Teri Nazar and Tu Mere Saamne are my absolute favorites and have a timeless quality about them. The classical touch is very evident in songs (especially the instrumental 'Obsession') as well as the score.

  1. SRK: I was seriously worried for people around him whenever he appeared on screen, he was so terrifying as Rahul. The manic look, even in the scenes where he wasn't in full psycho mode gave me chills. His character is so unpredictable and unhinged - he was both terrific and terrifying.

  2. Goorgeous Juhi: I had forgotten how beautiful Juhi Chawla is. She's looking mesmerizing in the film and rocks every look; be it the chiffon sarees, lehengas or the cute wintry pullovers or all the western looks in the film. She was styled very well, even though her character didn't do much else except being scared (rightly so) of her invisible stalker and not a lot of enterprise on her own.

  3. Direction: The film, its dialogues, characterization and the direction feel very modern for the 90s. It works fairly well as a romantic thriller even today.

What could have been better:

  1. Sunny Paji: I find it funny how Sunny blamed SRK's fame post the release on the way his anti-hero character was glorified in the film and severed ties with both SRK and YRF, given he was offered both Sunil and Rahul's roles and he chose the former as he didn't want to risk it. I don't think Rahul's character was shown in a positive light even once. He's positively crazy and utterly terrifying. Shah Rukh managed to make people root for him, solely with the strength of his performance. Sunny, who is in virtually every frame, song and has a great knight in the shining Armour going for him in the film, doesn't bring anything new. This might have worked in a vanilla action film where he just had to break bones and look tough. Here, he was outshined by SRK in terms of sheer performance and I guess it was easier to blame the script.

  2. Switzerland/Simla confusion: Nitpicking really. But Jadu Teri Nazar, which kicks off the filn was shot in Switzerland, and Juhi is shown departing the place in what seemed like Eurorail. And then they show her brother and his wife waiting for her arrival via train??? I was so confused. Why would she take a train to Mumbai instead of a flight? Then I realized that place she was studying was supposed to be 'Simla'. Lol.

  3. Weak Heroine: The movie wasn't about a message and it's a personal preference but I don't like damsels. Pretty sure a lot of women have borne the brunt of such invisible stalkers throughout their life and those who aren't privileged enough to have a Dhai Kilo ke Haath wala boyfriend or brother have had to get out of these situations by sheer bravery and wit. Juhu acted well and brought forth a lot of vulnerability in contrast to her otherwise bubbly personality. But she didn't have much to do here.

Overall a great rewatch. Solid 8/10.

What are some of the best Bollywood movies with a short runtime ?

Movies with a runtime of >2.5 hours need you to sit on a stretch and are less convenient for some people. If somebody wishes to have a good watch under 2.5 hours, what would be your top recommendations?

Hrithik had the best entry scene in spy universe, there's no two way about it. The man just started walking, took off his glasses and made it iconic without even uttering a single mass dialogue...

Bollywood has been far ahead in making empowering women led stories time and again. The kind of roles and opportunities actresses in Hindi cinema enjoy is unparalleled in India

In frame : Phool in Laapata Ladies Rani Mehra in Queen Jaya in Laapata Ladies Veera Tripathi in Highway

For all the flak bollywood receives time and again and many times rightly so for it's sexism, pay parity, item numbers etc. I feel hindi cinema at the same time has been far far ahead in bringing empowering women stories in full grandeur, from writing to direction to music to acting, everything is so nicely done in these movies and many more

Even the opportunities and power women enjoy in Hindi Cinema is far greater than any other indian industry

One of the most underrrated bollywood movie ever. Every bit of it is perfect AF,be it direction, action, music, lyrics characters, story and the message of the movie. I don't know why it failed to impress mass audience.

Cinematic similarities between Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Baz Luhrmann

Baz Luhrmann and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are both renowned filmmakers known for their distinctive, visually extravagant styles , as a diehard fan of the both of them I can't believe how long it took me to realise they share so many similarities. Here are some that I've noticed:

  1. Visual Aesthetics : Both directors are celebrated for their lush, opulent visual style. They often use elaborate sets, vibrant colors, and meticulous costumes to create visually stunning scenes that are rich in detail and texture.

  2. Emphasis on Romance and Drama : Their films frequently center around grand romantic narratives and intense emotional dramas. Both directors excel in portraying complex relationships and passionate love stories that are often set against the backdrop of larger societal issues.

  3. Musical Elements : Music plays a crucial role in the films of both Luhrmann and Bhansali. They incorporate song and dance sequences that are integral to the narrative, enhancing both the emotional and aesthetic appeal of their films. Luhrmann’s films like "Moulin Rouge!" and Bhansali’s films like "Devdas" are known for their musical sequences.

  4. Theatrical Influences : Their backgrounds in theater (SLB staged padmavati as an opera many years ago & Baz did La bohéme) profoundly influence their cinematic techniques. Both have a penchant for theatricality in their films, with a strong focus on dramatic staging and performance.

  5. Narrative Style : Both directors favor narrative grandeur and often adapt well-known stories, either from literature or history, infusing them with their unique style and interpretation.

I would love your opinions and thoughts on both of these cinematic mavericks. Also I may be a bit biased in saying that SLB is miles ahead of Baz in terms visual storytelling I do apologise for that. (Funny anecdote: I applied to study film direction after watching Devdas countless times, that's the kind of impact that film had on me).

This movie should be remade

This movie was way ahead of its time

The time where vfx wasn't a thing But they still pulled off such epic vision

I think it should be remade authentically with good vfx With action like bullet train

Who should make this ? (Director)

What do you think, will it work ?

Krrish 4 is on, so here's my shot at pitching a potential plot for it (drop yours in the comments)...

Krishna's life is currently full of struggles. Crime is at an all-time high. His son, Rohit, who is unaware of his father's secret identity, loves him, but is also disappointed in him, due to the lack of time his father has for him (Ranvijay, is that you?). Priya wants Krishna to hang up the suit, but he is against the idea, causing their relationship to get strained.

The plot kicks in when Krrish is attacked by a horde of robots. He fights them off and investigates their origins. This leads to him meeting the son of Vikram Sinha (Sharat Saxena's character from Krrish), Veer Sinha, who knows his secret identity. The two investigate together and discover that the scraps and rubble of Rohit Mehra's future-seeing computer that was recreated by Dr. Arya have vanished. The two find the computer, reassembled, in Kaal's abandoned lab. The place is swarming with the same robots that attacked Krrish. Suddenly, a man comes out to confront Krrish. The man can morph his body parts into bizarre alien-like body parts and has some other powers too. A fight ensues, and, cue massy entry bgm, Jaadu appears to rescue Krrish and Veer.

Basically, my idea for this pitch is that the man (haven't though of a name for him) is a member of Jaadu's planet, and he too was left behind on Earth with Jaadu. He was captured and experimented on, making his otherworldly powers even more powerful. However, the scientists permanently gave him the face of a human, accidentally, making it his only body part that he cannot morph. Now, this guy kills his captors and leaves to his planet, but is not accepted due to him resembling a human. He returns to Earth and decides to do something good for his planet for them to see him as a hero. He finds out about the computer, and decides to make it again to help solve the issues his planet will face before they happen. He makes it, but it only shows him one vision, before malfunctioning. That vision shows him something that prompts him to kill Krrish, as it shows his planet resembling hell, his people begging for mercy, being killed by humans, a hostile takeover, led by... Krrish.

I don't really have a proper structure in mind, just some plot beats. At one point, Krrish and Jaadu would go to the latter's planet, with the villain as a prisoner. The planet's high council decides to kill him, but he shares with them what he saw (this is where it would be revealed to the audience too). This causes a civil war to break out, with some wanting to kill Krrish and the others being on his side. Jaadu is forced to oppose Krrish due to his duty towards his planet. During a crucial moment in a chase/fight scene, a black hole like portal opens up on the planet, and out of it, comes a black blur that demobilizes the alien forces at light speed, and escapes with an unconscious Krrish. This blur, is a man, and this man, is... Krrish, wearing a modified suit, his eyes glowing red.

That would be the interval block. The deal with this evil Krrish is that he is from the future, where he captures Jaadu's planet. Due to Earth becoming virtually inhabitable in the future, humans would decide to migrate to Jaadu's planet. Apart from some opposition, there is peace. Slowly, things start getting out of hand and a civil war breaks out, with Krrish leading the humans against the aliens, and winning. The future Krrish wants to preserve his timeline, whereas the alien-man hybrid wants to change it. The second half would feature important character beats (Rohit learns about his father's secret identity, Krrish and Jaadu reconcile, etc.) and a lot of time travel shennanigans. The alien-man hybrid would also become the leader of his planet's anti-Krrish people, and wage war against Earth. As I said earlier, time travel would become a huge part of this chunk of the film. The evil Krrish would be a good oppurtunity for HR to go full psycho mode, as this character doesn't only see becoming the ruler of Jaadu's planet as a necessity, but also as something he genuinely loves. This would contrast with our Krrish seeing his powers as a responsibilty, and the two characters would deffo have conversations centred around this topic during their fight scenes.

So, yeah, that was my pitch. This could quite easily become a foundation for more sequels, or even a conclusion to the series.

What do NRIs watch these days?

Two decades ago every Bollywood production was targeted primarily to the Indian populations in US, UK, Canada etc but that has drastically changed in the last few years.

Even more recently films like 12th Fail and Lapata Ladies that are very hard for people to connect to if they’ve not lived in India. What is that population currently consuming?

What kind of films work better in theatres overseas? What are NRIs watching?

Just finished watching Swades

Omg now I normally cry anyways but man this was something else, I thought it was slow paced at the start a bit but it was for a reason, the acting by Gayatri Joshi (1st and only film she made) was very good also the same with Kaveri Amma they killed it. One of a kind I swear, had an okay ending I can’t lie, thought we would see SRK and Gayatri marry but honestly the movie is magnificent. The fact the mission they was on about (Global Precipitation Measurement) was a real thing too at NASA a few years later, the fact this movie was barely a hit shows how far ahead this movie was, India doesn’t deserve movies like these because they are under-appreciated. I understand why it’s a cult-classic.

"His greatest asset is a gift of 'projection'. Most actors know what's right, but their faces don't register the expression they visualize. Amitabh is a master of 'projection'. His style involves very little contortion of the face.... That's why he hits the audience straight!" - Salim Khan
