Stolen Bike?

Hi folks!
Is Florida ave nw bike safe? I'm napping the route to my new job from Columbia heights to union market and google maps is giving me this convulted route when 11 -> Florida is the most direct route. I know the NE side has some bikelanes (seen complaints about cars on them here!) whats going on the NW side?
The Mount Vernon Trail remains closed between the 14th Street Bridge and Four Mile Run Trail for recovery efforts related to the plane crash at DCA. Daingerfield Island and Jones Point are also closed. Anticipated reopening is February 10th.
This route through Crystal City is a fairly good alternative (although Google Maps is refusing to recognize a trail segment near the aquatics center)
We're posting updates as we get them on Bluesky, Facebook and Instagram.
Hi BikeDC,
I’m looking for advice on an alternate bike commute route with the Mount Vernon Trail (MVT) closure due to the tragic crash.
I normally ride from South George Mason & Four Mile Run, taking the W&OD → Four Mile Run → MVT through Gravelly Point to my job on the National Mall. With this section blocked, what’s the best detour? Would taking the W&OD to Custis be my best option?
Also, I’ve had a few bad bike-car incidents and really struggle with street riding anxiety. Would I be better off just taking the bus or a car?
Any advice is much appreciated and I hope this kind of post is allowed—thanks!
Whereabouts would the Fairfax County cross country Trail meet the Washington Old Dominion Trail? Is there any way to connect from one to the other? I doubt there’s a bicycle Cloverleaf but you get the idea
There is NO DETOUR. ART commuters beware.
The Washington DC City Council has embarked on an annual exercise: over the next few weeks, Council committees will be convening performance oversight hearings to examine city-agency activities and accomplishments. The committees will hear from officials and from the public, who will have opportunities to testify and submit written testimony. Read on for more information, including how to make your views heard, including regarding the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) and Department of Public Works (DPW). https://waba.org/2025/01/31/2025-dc-council-oversight-hearings/
The Mount Vernon Trail is being closed from 14th Street Bridge to Daingerfield Island as part of recovery efforts from last night's tragic plane crash at DCA. Please avoid the area and seek alternate routes. We're in communication with NPS and will share updates as we receive them. The duration of the closure is currently unknown.
You can still cross the 14th Street Bridge and head through LBJ Memorial Grove or the new trail segment to Long Bridge in order to get to Crystal City if you're headed south this evening.
Has anyone braved the trail today? Did all the icy parts melt in today’s heat?
Is it ready for a commute at the Langston Blvd bridge?
I managed to do the Arlington loop, only unclipping twice on Monday and getting my hopes up that the rest of the trails would be at least passable and ready for a bike commute. Too optimistic?
Had to walk it in some spots, this was by far the worst section. I usually ride across from the Kennedy Ctr up to Pierce Mill / Tilden St, but ended up just taking Porter Street to CT Ave. The Zoo loop segment was surprisingly clear though.
Mount Vernon Trail between Rosslyn and 14th Street Bridge is completely rideable. There's at least a bike-tire-width path that's ice free for all but one short section of the paved trail. That section is easily bypassed in the grass. The boardwalk south of Roosevelt Island is slushy but also rideable. Just make sure you use caution in the morning.
If you're nervous about morning ice, you can take the ART 43 bus non stop from Rosslyn metro to Crystal City metro. It runs every 10 minutes.
With the weather above freezing I'm pondering an outdoor ride. Is Beach Dr. rideable or are there still snow/ice patches?
Today the Friends of the Mount Vernon Trail had 23 volunteers remove sheets of ice from the trail. In some places the ice was over an inch thick. We definitely got an upper body workout. We were able to clear the Crystal City Connector as well as creating a walking path on Bridge 29C near the airport. The bridge is still very slippery.

More specifically west of Dunn Loring. Looking to do a ride tomorrow out to Herndon and am unsure how icy things are. I know there will be some melting today with the weather and in the AM, but an idea of how bad it is now will inform of how bad it may be tomorrow.
Just looking to see if anyone had a status on the canal conditions. Want to try biking it tomorrow (26th) starting at say milepost 22.
I’ve been using CaBi e-bikes to commute twice a week for ~8 months. I found out I’ll be going back to the office full time in the spring. I’d like to buy my own bike for commuting. I’d like to buy an acoustic/analog/traditional/regular/pedal powered bike, because I am fine continuing to use CaBi for e-bikes.
So, do you have any recommendations for shops and commuter bikes? My commute is approximately 4 miles from Michigan Park to NoMa. I’m on the MBT for about 75% of my ride. Budget is $750ish.
Sometimes the seats are pointing upwards for some reason on the bikes and it's uncomfortable. I tried doing it myself but it felt like i was gonna break them and i was in a hurry.
Haven’t been biking since the ice/sleet/snow Sunday, if I skip bike lanes and ride in the road, is it doable today? Seems miserable out there but gotta figure out a way to get around. Thanks in advance!
Wharf and DC both refuse to plow it and point fingers at each other. It’s been two weeks. No problem shoveling snow for a sidewalk or any of the roads or driveways…..
Edit- meant between MD/DC line and Georgetown
NPS is usually pretty good about plowing it but between snow on a Sunday night, a holiday Monday and a freeze Tuesday, there were several spots that required slow going. I was able to make it through on regular Marathon tires, but did slide a few times.
Blurry because I was sprinting after them before they turned off again. Car entered at Randolph Place and exited at S Street, where there are nominally barriers but enough room to fit a car between them (much like the new bollard at R Street, where there’s still room to maneuver a car around). Reaching out to my ANC and council member, but I hope it doesn’t take someone dying for the city to take this seriously.
I do mending on pants for blow outs in the fabric from riding.
$20-40 an item just depending on how many holes and if I’m managing holes crotch gussets and stuff
If anybody is interested in having pants mended that have the butt torn up from riding gimmie a shout!
