Cleveland Critical Mass

Hi, I live in Pittsburgh but have been wanting to come visit Cleveland to try biking in a different city. I was hoping to come out to one of the Cleveland Critical Mass rides but I’m actually not sure if they are still happening. The Facebook, Instagram, and website all seem to be old with no new posts. Is Cleveland Critical Mass still a thing? Are there any other groups that I could follow to do some bike riding in NEO?

Worst Hills in Akron (NEO Dirty Dozen?)

Hi, All! I wanted to compile a list of the steepest, most treacherous Hills in Akron, and possibly Cleveland that could be used to train for or be an equivalent of the Dirty Dozen race held in Pittsburgh.

Why Akron? Well, I'm newer to Cleveland's topography and grew up in Akron and am more accustomed to its many hills. If if you guys were to make a list of hardest hills in Akron and or Cleveland to climb and maybe make a course out of those locations, which would they be?

So far in regards to Akron I have:

Cadillac Hill

Northampton Rd.

Howard Street

Maple St.

Brittain Rd.

Summit St.

Dan St.

S. Bates St.

Memorial Parkway

Uhler Avenue

Smith Road

Copley Road

Merriman Road

Mill St. (any west-east Downtown street)

I know E. 71st in Cuyahoga Heights, Old Denison, and any road going into Downtown from the Flats, but what else has Cleveland got?

Good biking in the Chagrin falls area?

Hello, I'm new to Cleveland and live in the Chagrin falls area. Are there any good bike trails around there that are integrated with nature and the natural beauty of the area?

Spin bikes for the vertically challenged.

Don't know if this is the right group. When are spin bikes going to be made w options for shorter cranks and a smaller V factor for people 5 feet tall? What do you all do? My right knee hurts!

CVNP/Brecksville Gravel and Trails

I'll be rolling through Brecksville Reservation and CVNP as part of an Emerald Necklace ride. Last time I did this, I just stayed on Valley Parkway and went straight through, but I'm interested in exploring more of CVNP. Are there any ridable trails within a ~3-4 mile radius? I see tons of trails just south of Riverview Rd and Chippewa Creek Dr, but it's hard to tell online if they're actually ridable. I'm on a gravel bike with 45s, so most tame moutain bike stuff is doable.

Just looking for a quick diversion during a long ride. Thanks!

Lost Rear Reflector at a few potential Trailheads

Hello fellow NEO Cyclists! I was biking the Towpath and the Summit County Bike and Hike this afternoon and realized when I finished that my Planet Bike Grateful Red Rear Reflector/Blinky fell off. I'm guessing it may have come off when I unparked my bike from one of the bike racks from a few possible trailhead. This is a farcry on the offchance someone here has found it.

The potential places it would be are:

-the Boston Mills trailhead bathroom, behind the Mitchell's/Boston Store -The Mustill Store bike rack by the bathrooms in Akron -The Young Road trailhead in Stow (again, bike rack next to the bathrooms)

Link of the Blinky in question: https://www.amazon.com/Planet-Bike-Grateful-Tail-Light/dp/B017YXXNUY/ref=asc_df_B017YXXNUY/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=692875362841&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=821916497742574420&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9051739&hvtargid=pla-2281435180018&psc=1&mcid=a630a8fd52443bbdb63541f69cc6d7e2&hvocijid=821916497742574420-B017YXXNUY-&hvexpln=73&gad_source=1

If y'all have any leads, please let me know! Happy Riding!

4 yr olds at Cleveland Cliffs bike park?

Hi Cleveland. We're thinking about a weekend trip to Cleveland (from Pittsburgh) and I'm wondering if the bike park would be a good place to take my 4.5 yr old kids. They are really strong bikers and loved going to the now-closed Wheel Mill indoor bike park here in Pittsburgh (RIP 😢). Even though most of that park was too advanced for them, there were a couple of beginner level rooms that they could spend a ton of time in. How is Cleveland Cliffs bike park? Looks like there's a beginner area - is it big/interesting enough to entertain the kids for a while? Could they do any other parts of the park or is meant mostly for bigger kids and adults?

Also any other biking suggestions would be welcome, we like trail riding and they can usually manage rides of 4-6 miles, especially if flat.

Thanks!

Police Interactions and Cycling

Hi, I'm researching bicycling, knowledge of bicycling rules/laws and adherence to these rules, interactions with police, and perceptions of police to understand different experiences across groups of individuals.

If you are a cyclist over the age of 18 years, please consider taking this completely anonymous survey, which will take approximately 15 minutes: https://johncarroll.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5aJavqHo8kjMAhU

Please feel free to share the link with anyone you know who cycles outdoors.

Heading out to Chagrin River Rd. from Cedar-Lee

I'm getting back into cycling after a 13 year break and trying to build up some endurance. When I was a bit younger and into riding, I did the majority of my riding in the Bay Area of CA where there was usually nice bike lanes or less traffic. Here in NE Ohio, I'm finding I have to ride 95% of the time in traffic, which I am not used to.

I'm wondering what's everyone's experience riding Shaker Blvd./Gates Mills roads? I find it feels mostly OK, but I do catch cars coming up behind me pretty close before they take the left lane and pass me. It feels like maybe they aren't seeing me until the last second. I wear a bright orange jersey and have blinking tail light. I ride very defensive, but I do ride center-right in the lane (or straight center) rather than off to the right side.

Then once I am out in Chagrin River Rd. area's two lane roads, I ride center of lane until I see a car coming up behind and will move to the right as they approach (if it is safe).

I'm 50 years-old, have MS, but I am not that slow either. Usually average 14 mph for my rides.

Do you think these roads are safe-ish to ride? I'm just not used to "taking the lane" and riding with cars breathing down my neck like this. I suspect I just need to get used to it?

Edit: I just rode out to Shaker Blvd., took that to Gates Mills and then rode that all the way to where it loops back on itself, and then the same route home. Nice quick 19 mile loop and it felt better this time. I saw more cyclists (Saturday morning). Gates feels good, Shaker so-so, but I will feel better as I get more experience and get faster. 15 mph average this time, which helped.

Appreciate all the good replies and ideas I'm getting. Thanks!

Getting looks

Loving all the looks of wonder we're getting while running errands on a rainy Saturday in our cargo bike, hopefully some folks are rethinking their car necessity even in our leafy suburb

ORC for bike paths & towpath?

We have all seen traffic control signs on the trails and Stark county now has a speed trailer. Can anyone cite any ACTUAL Ohio Revised Code pertaining to the “rules” while in the towpath or other bike friendly trails in Ohio?

Bike commuting: Ohio City -> Cleveland Clinic

I'll be moving to the city in a couple of months for work. I'm coming from Michigan and have been super lucky to be able to bike commute to work for the last 2-3 years.

How is the ride from Ohio City to CC main hospital? Is it suicide with the cars?

Hey riders! Stolen bike :(

This Kona Rove (AL 650 in blue, 48 cm) was just stolen from the downtown Cleveland library. If you see it around town or for sale online, please give me a shout!

Is Chagrin River Road still closed at Shaker?

Thought for sure they would be done a couple weeks ago, but still needed to take a detour. Wondering how I should plan my next ride. If still closed, is there a date for completing the road construction?

The fact that there are still whole trees in the north park bike lane makes me depressed.

The street has been cleared for days but most of the bike lane is still pretty unrideable. I just wish clearing and cleaning it was a bigger priority especially because it is the route I commute on.

Serial number registration

just moved to Lakewood from out of state. Is there somewhere I can / should register my bike? I'm in Bike Index but wondering if there's a local registry as well. Thanks!

New confused bike commuter in the suburbs

So I got influenced by Tik Tok and really want to start using my bike to get around more places and be able run my errands in my neighborhood by bike. I am just very confused on how I should be biking here though! I’m in the west side suburbs so no bike lanes and no convenient bike paths places like I see online, mostly using my bike for 1-2 maybe 3 mile trips so far. Do I still use the street or are the sidewalks ok? I’m slow, with a kinda heavy 3 speed bike, not sure if that matters or not but Im very nervous about holding up traffic behind me. And honestly worried about looking strange since no one is really biking around here :( There’s not much pedestrian foot traffic to worry about, am I ok if I just pay attention to driveways and ride on sidewalks or is it always a bad idea? The only people I see use the street with their bikes look like serious cyclists, road bike, spandex, etc.

In the suburbs, how concerned do I need to be with locking up my bike if I stop at a store or stay inside a coffee shop for an hour or two? l do lock up most of the time unless I’m just popping in to grab something quick, but just have a cable lock atm. I am thinking of getting a u-lock or folding lock instead. I've saved the serial number and have thought about hiding an air tag on my bike too. Half the bikes I see out places aren’t even locked at all and there don’t seem to be a lot of bike racks around here. I don’t know what the etiquette of what I can lock to and where and how far away I should lock my bike if there’s no rack.

Tire Width for Cuyahoga Towpath?

I'm planning to make my first family biking trip along the towpath in Cuyahoga Valley National Park this weekend. I discovered last night that I will need new tires before a big excursion far from home.

I have always been wanting to go to a slimmer tire than the 32mm that came with my bike. Will a 28 or 30mm tire be too narrow for the gravel on this path?

Looking for the best views/prettiest spots you’ve came across

Hello, thanks for clicking! I know this doesn’t really have to do with biking but I KNOW you guys had to have come across some awesome spots. I’m currently 15 weeks pregnant and after doing specific blood test, my gender results are to be coming in sometime this or next week! I do not plan on having streamers or smoke like a usual reveal but instead, just a cake. I would like this to be an intimate moment between me and my husband. We’ve always enjoyed going to the metro parks and just exploring on and off path. I’m looking for something that’s not a pavilion but a pretty spot in the forest with a picnic table or something similar. Im also open to other ideas that aren’t a forest, just some were outdoorsy and pretty. We live in the Cleveland area so we’re looking for something within 30/40 minutes away from there. Thank you again :)

Bike Locking

I'll be moving to Cleveland in the next year or so and am curious what to do if I can't find a bike rack. Is it legal for me to lock my bike to a street sign?
