Subharmonics vs vocal fry

I've been trying to learn how to sing like an oktavist without a tutor. I don't live and russia and there's no one that teaches it near me. I have a question. Am I beginning to grasp subharmonics or is this fry? The drop seems to be an exact octave. I'm just looking for some help.. https://vocaroo.com/i/s01nwJLZ6Koi Thanks. Don't judge, I've only been trying for 4-5 days and this is my best attempt yet.

Just dropping in to say hello, Bass Singer here

I was one (of the many) people to take JD Sumner's place in the Stamps Quartet after he passed away. Been singing bass forever. I love JD, he was a mentor of sorts, but in terms of musicality and pitch center, Tim Riley is king..also love Big Chief. "Vocal Fry" is nothing more than a parlor trick, doesnt impress me at all. JD did a LOT of that. Still though..when he was on pitch and not fucking around, he was a force of nature! great forum . If yall need a bass for anything, please holler!

Vocal Range Questions (Kinda long)

It's pretty difficult to find reliable information of basses. The internet is full of misinformation, or the same information everybody else is posting. So here's a couple questions:

  1. How reliable is genetics in judging vocal range later down the road? For instance, my dad has a far lower range than I do, but (due to health issues) he can't access the very bottom of his range. I heard it once and it got me wondering if I would ever make it that low. My lowest right now is Eb2 (can breathe C#2) and he put out a Bb1. So, based on your experience, is it a reasonable to expect that kind of range when I'm older?

  2. How did you go about extending your low range? When I was 17 I managed to hit a B1 with all the wrong techniques and I avoid them at all costs in fear that I damage my throat. But if it ends up being an non issue, might see I can do it again.

  3. Seemingly a lot of basses find it easier to sing lower notes if the move their chin toward their chest, but I find it easier is I move my chin slightly away. Is that part of a technique that I'm missing, or is that just a thing that happens?

Any questions, I'll be on and off throughout the day, and I appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Just hit my first real Db2 in chest! Feels good!

Maybe it's because I've been spending so much time singing D2 – formerly my lowest chest note – while singing backup or while messing around with friends (most of whom don't know how low I can go), but today I surprised myself by hitting a Db2!

It's not too much, but it feels like all my practice is finally paying off! Thanks to everyone in this sub for posting such crazy bass notes that it gave me self-esteem issues until I could hit them.
