I'm trying to learn how to dunk at 5'6. I don't play baskeball, but can touch rim from just jumping without a running start. I'm working on learning how to run into a verticle jump. Does anyone have an idea of how long it takes to actully get the hand eye cordination part of dunking down?
Im right handed i think i do most things with my right hand but when it comes to most sports i use my left hand. But its not because its more comfortable really its because my right arm isnt flexible atall. Should i keep shooting with my left arm or work on flexibility on my right and shoot with that
im a 6'2 PG and weigh about 185lbs (average height for a PG where i play is probably 5'7). Any advice on how to use my size and weight to bully smaller players??
Okay so currently I am wanting to increase my vertical. For my gym routine I am doing PPL x Arnold and I am wondering whether I should add a small plyometrics warmup for the start of each workout or should entirely replace my legs strength workout with plyometrics. Please also kindly add any exercises if saying warmup/exercises to do for a session 🙏
I have one and I lost a regular leather one but I don’t know if I should train with the goal grip one cuz it’s rubber and it would get me used to having more grip on the ball unlike in a regular game with a leather one
So I just had a tournament today. And in one of the games we played, we went against a very psychical team that would always push us around. They were pushing and elbowing and the ref wasn’t calling shit. One of actually elbowed me and knocked my canine tooth. I want to get stronger so I can go against these teams.
I noticed they sometimes seem to prefer standing with one leg on a chair or bench instead of sitting down. I saw one do it for half an hour. Or lean one feet against a wall. I see this most often with basketball and soccer enthusiastic.
I used to think it’s a young people kewl thing. But I realized only certain people who habitually do certain activities usually habitually do it otherwise it isn’t comfortable even for those in the same age group. I am guessing playing ball for long run changes muscle needs?
Also while less common these days compared it before as most change shoes, some players prefer staying in sneakers a bit longer even home. Or More likely than others to leave shoes on at home occasionally. It appears including Ai mentioned it’s safer for knee and joint health than taking them off immediately after intense play?
I am 5’8 with a standing reach of 7’4, with a standing vert of 30 inches, and I also want to ask, what would my vert be with proper form
In 2 hours i have my first game in long time. I am 15 years old, i used to play a lot when i was younger but i stopped during the pandemic and didnt start again. In September i joined a local team and i have improved a lot since. Yesterday the coach told me that i am in the squad for todays game, so here i am today feeling really anxious. Any tips?
Hey team!
First time poster here, so please be kind :)
I would like to get some input please as to which pathway is best for our son, here is a bit of background:
My son is 10 years old. He started playing at 9, but that was school-based, for fun.
Earlier this year we moved country (to Australia) and he is now in a proper club playing in the domestic competition.
He played the first semester (Feb-June this year) in an U12 team (lets call it Team A) in division 4, which is the lowest division. The team was undefeated all season, we won the semis and the Grand Final to win the comp.
He simultaneously signed up with a second team (Team B) coached by the same coach as Team A, which was also U12 but division 3 (so one higher), and played the winter season April-September, so overlapped with both teams for a while. They lost 4, won 9 games, won their semi final and the Grand Final, and won the comp.
He is now playing the second semester (July - December) with Team A, same players, same coach. They are currently 2nd and will make the semi finals. They are still in division 4, instead of moving our team up to div 3, they moved the weak teams into a lower div 5.
The club now wants to know what everyone is doing for next semester (Feb 2025). The thing is that 6 of our 8 players are aging out and have to move up to U14. Our son will turn 11 in Feb 2025 when the new season starts, and has two more semesters to play in U12 until he has to move up to U14.
We have two options:
Option 1 is we leave him on this team, same players, same coach, and he moves up to U14 with everyone else, and will play in div 4.
Advantages are: He knows and likes the boys and the coach, it's comfortable because we know who he will be playing with. Us parents get on super well.
Disadvantages: He will be by far the smallest kid. He is only (I think 143 or 145cm, and is already the smallest on his team. He is not only short, but also quite skinny and we are worried that he will play much bigger/taller kids. Also, most kids on his team objectively aren't as good as him, and he would prefer to have players on his team that are better than him, that can push him and that he can learn from.
Option 2 is to leave him in his age group in U12 but put him into a division 3 team.
Advantages are that he will be pushed more, learn more, is surrounded by better players, and better opponents.
Disadvantages are that he will be in a new team, he doesn't know anybody and you never know what sort of kids will be on your team (ballhogs? muppets? arsehole parents?)
His goal is to go to WABL tryouts next year (Sept 2025) that is the Western Australia Basketball League. He didn't go this year because he wasn't ready yet as this is only his first year.
We think that Option 2 will be better for him.
Bit about him:
He is attentive, coachable (coach loves him), he listens and doesn't muck around, always tries his hardest. He is short and skinny compared to the others, but that makes him good at stealing the ball, he is very fast, his specialty are layups (whereas the highest scorer on our team can only get the shots from literally under the bucket), pretty good ball handling skills and good court awareness. He has improved a lot on his defense, and that came from playing the one season with Team B in div 3. He does stand his ground better now and get in front of players, rather than reaching across and getting called up for a foul. But D is probably the biggest area he needs to improve on, and general toughness on the court, as well as getting into the paint more.
He trains once a week with his team and once a week he does technical training offered by the club, plus one game a week.
Jeez, that was quite the novel lol good on ya for reading that far.
What does everyone else think? We obvs talked with him and he would rather play in U12 div 3, then move up to U14 and play div 4.
So yes i have played matches before with people im not familiar with, which is also most likely why im nervous.
The things im scared of i believe is my coaches they scold plenty of times if u mess up so now im questioning “why am i scared to mess up if all i gotta do is not mess up”
And also scared of others opinions ik its dumb but its been there with me all my life and i never knew how to get around it.
Lastly my dad he smokes so he’s got some anger problems apparently he dont like it if i pass the ball even if i win the match if i dont get at least 20+ he’s gonna scold me or smthin.
Any tips or tricks to get around these fears? Any help with be greatly appreciated

im 5'10 and like 160 pounds 15 btw i cant dunk i can touch rim i can grab rim off of vert i think my vert is like above 35 i just cant hold onto the ball i think my main issue might be confidence but other than that i feel uncoordinated when going for lobs and i cant hold onto the ball whenever i try to dunk like at all
I usually practice outside with metal or plastic backboards, what are tips to adjust to glass backboards on layups?
Hey!
Do you all recording your game? I found video is always a good way to teach and review tactics. But it's really really hard to do any edition on the video and time-consuming. Even if you'd like to draw some line, write some texts on a player, it takes lots of effort.
That's why I build a website application that allows you to effortlessly put your insight into real game clips with just a few clicks. This really helps young players learning and feeling exciting. It's not an add and it's totally free. I'm in the Harvard Visual Computing Group so it is a study. Just want to share. Feedback, advice and even request would be greatly appreciated!

I've started basketball a few days ago, I'm doing well and starting not to be too scared to grab the ball, but this problem is making me feel way too scared to grab the ball nowadays.
While dribbling, a lot of my opponets and team-mates make fun of me cause I dribble so weirdly, I'm trying my best. Any tips? I'm good while standing, but not while running
i’m tall and lanky, not much weight on me. i struggle with making good plays and being able to drive. i don’t know whether it’s a confidence issue or what but i NEVER get to the basket. i either do a move and midrange or catch and shoot. is there any way i can work on my game to be better? i really wanna make the team next year.
When I play against my friends I play pretty well and when I play during practice I play well as well. But the second we hop into a real game I get SUPER nervous and straight up forget how to play basketball. Then I just screw up a lot. Do you know how I can help this?
Hey guys) Ive met this guy in uni and started playing ball with him recently. He is unathletic, about 6”2 and he really abuses the skyhook)) I am 6”1-6”2, i have a good vert ~34 inches, and i can easily guard him anyhow EXCEPT when he starts using skyhooks. I guess it is unblockable until i get like 45 inch of vert XD. So maybe there are other ways to guard it? maybe get him off-balance, or contest it in other ways? Help please
