So, we started teaching go to kids, but the problem is that they are restless and each time they move - the table and the goban also move. After a few moves -- stones are all around the place :) :(
The idea was to create a board where the grid is still prominent and visible, but the stones "sit" slightly in their place. But they arent't completely fixed (like on the go boards for the visually impaired). That way it's harder for them to move from their position and also it's immediately obvious that they aren't where they should be. And it still feels similar to a normal goban and stones.
So, here's my 3d printed prototype.
Your thoughts?
I have had my butt handed to me a dozen times on https://online-go.com/ and have yet to win a single match against a human. Yet, I was never hurt, lost any money, never made fun of, or had anything bad ever happen to me playing online Go. If you are afraid to face a human, just remember. There are zero consequences for failure.
There are no Go boards and pieces in local shops of course.
There are Go boards in Amazon et al. But all of them are soooo expensive.
You can find decent chess boards plus pieces in India starting from just ~150 INR (US$ 1.77). No such luck in Go.
Very poor looking ones with cheap and weak material start at ~3,000 INR (US$ 36). Decent ones all cost USD$ 100+, and go as much as 200$, 300$, 500$- no limit.
Can you please suggest me something? Or am I stuck to apps for now?
I'll be on vacation for awhile in Hilton Head Island, SC at the end of the month--will probably have some time to stop by a club if anyone would be interested. I know it's the holidays, but ya never know! Any takers?
After the new update, I wait for a long time to get matched up. And today I am waiting for like 1 hour and still not getting matched up. I tried increasing the rank gap as well but nothing is helping me. And some times what i get is bot like players who play very random.
Anyone know if there's a, what I call, reverse timer available? The thing is, I have this tendency to play way too fast in IRL games, and so do several of the other go club members. A reverse timer might be of help to overcome this. I mean a (dual) timer which gives a beep after a number of seconds, and only áfter the beep you are allowed to make a move.
Is there some kind of equivalent place to play Go (A chess.com but for go). If so, what are some easy tips for someone transitioning from chess to go. I know the basic rules but that’s about it.
title, im playing black, the person im playing against told me i can't live there, is it true? i already have 2 eyes there, really nothing can be done to live there?
Black's sente in fuseki is quite strong. In my games as white I frequently wound up with black possessing quite daunting moyo and I always ponder what to do. Should I develop of invade?
For instance in this game my opponent played strange joseki and I lost a corner. It caused I started to "tilt" and lost. At this point his moyo/territory started to look quite big, much more impressive than mine. AI says it was just +5 for black so nothing big, but I also struggle to determine what I should do in such position. My last move was in A.
Can you give me some general advices how to play as white? Simple baduk ad YT said white should strive for preventing black from forming double wing. Are there other general rules but this?
Semifinal of the 1st Nanyang Cup Li Qincheng VS. Wang Xinghao
Round 6 of the 49th Meijinsen Ichiriki Ryo VS. Shibano Toramaru
Final of 4th China Women's Weiqi Mingren Tournament Lu Minquan VS. Yu Zhiying
Joseki - Star point - Knight's move to Corner approach (1)
Skills of Reduce liberties & Endgame
As the title suggests; is it over for black?
Thanks in advance
In the finals of the 7th Wu Qingyuan Cup between Ueno Asami and Tang Jiawen Ueno Asami won by 2-1. This allowed her to obtain the title for the first time and this is also her 2nd Female International Tournament Title after winning Senko Cup in 2022. This is also the 2nd international title obtained this year by Japan after Ichiriki Ryo won in the Ing Cup.
Game 1: Ueno Asami wins against Tang Jiawen
Game 2: Tang Jiawen wins against Ueno Asami
Game 3: Ueno Asami wins against Tang Jiawen
Ueno Asami’s performance in this tournament was top-notch, beating the strongest Chinese players Li He and Yu Zhiying to get into the finals. Known as the “Hammer”, she appeared very confident in her games while throwing her “Hammer Punches”. Even in the finals, other than Game 2, she had a perfect win in both Game 1 and Game 3 while following her style of play. Interestingly, the black player won all three games in the finals, which shows that both players are stronger with the black stones. In fact, Ueno Asami took black for all the games that she won, even winning by 0.5 points for 2 games! She usually prefers white, but this shows the Hammer is constantly evolving.
Congratulations to Ueno Asami and congratulations to Japan!

I've hovered around 1k-1d for quite a while and feel like this is a major weakness of mine. Most of my games favor fighting (usually taking influence) and evaluating the board according to weak groups, thickness, attack and defense. When a game devolves into large scale fighting sequences, I feel comfortable and often in control. My issue lies in more peaceful games and/or low territorial count games, ones where estimation and efficiency are key. Almost never during my games am I explicitly considering points, so against stronger, slower styles I often feel lost (even if they repeatedly hand me sente). What is a good way to focus on this skill? I don't want to practice counting. I would honestly rather lose than need to count lol, and I feel like I'm not at the level where that's remotely necessary yet.
2" bamboo with Yunzi stones: link here
1.6" shin kaya with Yunzi stones: link here
Yunzi stone safety testing kit: link here
If you have the Amazon prime credit card, each is eligible for 7% cash back if you choose the 10-day, slow shipping option. I own the 2" bamboo board but it's too heavy, in my humble opinion. I haven't weighed it but I'm guessing 20 pounds. The 1.6" shin kaya is only 10 pounds according to a separate amazon page selling just the board only for $100.
I own melamine and yunzi stones and have weighed them. The yunzi stones are about 3x heavier (1.48kg vs 0.49kg). I've also bought a cheap 0.8" go board for $40 that is the perfect size and weight for my tastes. A lot of people associate thickness of their go boards with prestige, but I have nobody to show my go boards to, so prestige has no appeal to me. I mainly want a go board that I can set up positions and replay famous games (like the 5 Lee Sedol Alphago matches), once I've memorized them on the Go-Dojo app from my phone.
I ordered the 1.6" shin kaya board earlier and my long-term goal is to sell both my heavy boards (but keeping the stones which I value more) and make my own 1" maple board in the future, which given my rate of procrastination will be in about 20 years from now... 😅

I tried playing the 5-5 point. Turns out that a position that occurs all the time is the following.
White invades on 4-4, and after the push on 3 and 4, black can double hane on 5 and 7 (I believe in order to get 11 in sente and force white to answer on C4).
Then, AI suggests E2. Sometimes it is the blue move, sometimes it is the second or third best move. I cannot understand the reason tho. It seems to me that if W plays E2 I can simply answer on F2, so there is no reason to play there now. I see how it helps my position and gives me solid influence and makes my group stronger, but I cannot be convinced that it is big enough to play in the opening.
Can someone please explain to me why that move is so valuable?
Demo board: https://online-go.com/demo/1375261
I've played about 20 games since my original post and here is what I have accomplished so far:
- Improved to 4kyu from 5kyu on OGS
- I now recognize the basic shapes in play
- I can see the movement of the stones
- My global thinking as evolved to see what my opponent is aiming towards
- I now recognize my errors in play much earlier, although this does not prevent me from making the initial mistakes in the first place as of yet.
So far I have been organizing my thoughts to write my first essay and it will be on shape and shape development.
I don't plan on posting these or making videos: these are just like diary entries to return to at another time to see how my thinking has evolved on the concepts I am working towards mastery.
I've been inconsistent on doing puzzle work as Tsumego Hero was down a few times, but I usually run puzzles until I run out of hearts or I complete 100 problems, which ever comes first.
I do the puzzles quickly to see if my instincts are correct and I run into the wall when the puzzles get to 3k and above.
I will reset my progress once I finish a puzzle collection and I'll actually take to visualize the answer rather than just jumping in to it.
I haven't watched but one match during the Samsung Cup and I didn't remember who it was but it was during the round of 32.
I will have to do better about watching matches on Baduk TV and then reviewing their matches on my board at home.
I'll post another summary of my progress in a months time.
If you want to discuss progression, tactics and style I am all about that or if you want to set up a match sometime in the future you can find me on:
OGS - Soillwill
KGS - NoireD
Lastly, to anyone that is deadset on up-selling AI to me: just don't.
I said I will NOT, keyword, use it in my training and I will keep my word on that.
I got into a few disagreements with people that were dead set on trying to convince me to use AI when I clearly stated my purpose in not using AI, which was to rekindle my fire for the game in a deeper way and understand what I have neglected to learn over the years.
I will not be swayed, enticed, coerced, chastised, brow-beaten, patronized, talked down to, or in any form or fashion consider bringing it into MY, keyword, game.
If you disagree with me, that is fine, we all have our ways and I will not look down on your way of doing things so long as you don't look down on my way of doing things.
I say this as a warning to those that want to force the issue when I've asked them not to as I will not be nice about what I have to say in the future.
I don't want to get ugly, but my reflection waits until after I pass the mirror so it won't have to see my mug, so I guess it is to late.
My only caveat is if you are describing how you reformed your tactics or discovered a quirk about your play because you saw a pattern to your matches after using AI.
I have no problem with that as that is how you train and we can talk extensively about the tactics or quirks and how your reformed your game as we all have them to some extent, I'll just have nothing to add about AI in the conversation.
