Recently my axolotl died. I really have no answers as to what caused the death. Breeder said could have been unknown illness or parasite. Just curious if I need to completely clean my tank and start a completely new cycle before introducing a new axolotl to the tank.
Just wanted to share Booger with the world (he looked like a booger as a larvae). I’m a science teacher and raised a couple eggs from a breeding pair for my classroom. The students loved it and it’s been so neat seeing him/her grow up :)
Just moved my little guy into a new tank this weekend and it’s a lot bigger than his last tank and need some advice on decorating. He is about 1.5 years old and is about 10-ish inches long, is it safe to use sand? (Was advised against it when he was smaller and he has since lived on a glass-bottom) also how much wiggle room should there be in hides, Do they like to be quite snug in there? He currently has some bits of wide pipe and he seems to like that but want to spice it up a bit in there.
Today I got my hands on a 1 and a half months old baby axolotl. While I've started cycling a larger tank for it so far for when it gets older, for now I've been keeping it in a large bowl. I've seen advice from others on the subreddit saying it is best to completely change the water after each feeding, but I think moving it around so much may stress it out because all I have to do so is a small net. It was fed frozen blood worm earlier today, and since the tank has been changed and it has been fed baby brine shrimp. I'm reaching a point where I have to decide how often to clean the bowl, and by how much. Is 100% twice a day reasonable or should I be doing less? Can you clean baby brine shrimp without a water change?
I found someone on marketplace who said that can’t keep their wild type axolotl anymore and I sent them a message asking how much and if they come with the enclosure, they told me 75$ and he comes with a 45 gallon tank and stand, does this seem legit to yall? They said they aren’t home and won’t be till later tonight so they will send me pics tomorrow
Is he bleeding? He looks ok. He’s eating ok. I’m just tubbing him because I went on vacation (left him with a friend) and now his tank is out of wack. He’s been biting at the water and almost jumping a bit too for a while. What’s going on???
Hi all
Looking at getting an axolotl, and have spent weeks reading and researching.
I’ve read a few places that you can speed up the cycling process by getting tank water from someone with an established axolotl tank.
Is that true?
Thanks :)
I’ve been cycling my 40gallon bare bottom tank upgrade for nearly 40 days. I originally used Dr Tim’s ammonia and one and only nitrifying bacteria. Ammonia bottomed out at 0 about 2 weeks ago but nitrite has hung on for dear life. The last 2 or 3 days it’s sat at .25ppm and I’m unsure of what to do next. Should I keep waiting, water change, dose ammonia and see what happens? I may just be being impatient, or my cycle may have just died out I’m not sure. I quit dosing ammonia because it was 4ppm, so I let it die down on its own to where it was 0. Everything I’ve read said not to dose until ammonia and nitrite were 0, but that just hasn’t happened. Anyone know what I should do next or should I let it be? I also have quick start that I use for my actual fish aquariums, and some One and Only left over, would it do any good to try that?
i bought her recently from a reptile expo, the seller said shes healthy despite her limbs being bitten off and having to be regrown. is it just an extra limb? do i need to take her to a vet?
Hello! I have some fun things in my axo tank that I am trying to find some solutions for. I noticed there are some hydra and I think limpets and planaria. I have some “no planaria” but I haven’t done much research on if it safe for axolotls. There are also tons of snails but zucchini on a stick does the job for them. Any advice? I know that they probably aren’t dangerous but seeing them makes my ass itch.
Evening. Just recieved 5 yound axos from a friend after a huge birth (not expected) I have them currently in 2 4l tanks. They are I think about 1 to 3 mo the old but not sure. They have plenty of space and currently doing daily changes.
Question is am I better changing daily or get a filter? Happy to get filters but all seem to be for much larger tanks. The 4l are still big for them. Do I get larger set ups (guessing like 20l next) with appropriate filters now and start to cycle? water ready for 2 to 4 weeks time? And is HOB or in water better for the little guys. (Revieved due to child insisting, now trying to give happy lifes).
Thanks.
Check out our class pet Odo. Help our students upgrade his aquarium this coming school year. Check out our project.
Does anyone have recommendations for a good filter for axolotls? Any other tank suggestions would help as well but I am most interested in the filter as of right now
Hello
I like Axolotl like everyone here does, but I personally dont own one.
But I noticed something with them that the internet couldnt answer and neither could a visit at the local zoo. Some Axolotl have small black beady eyes and others have red or yellowish eyes. Why is this so? Is this just a genetic variation or a sign of inbreeding? Its a genuine question that I like to have answered. Also, thank you to everyone that post images of their beloved Axolotl, they are cute and I like to look at them. Sincerly.
Hello,
I've owned my axolotl for around 6+ months and he is happy and healthy. The parameters have all been kept in check with a 0 in ammonia. Whenever I clean the tank, no matter how much I persist there is always a little dust of particles at the bottom. I can never get them all out so the tank still looks a little dirty even when I've worked hard to clean it. I use a syphon and the tank is bare bottom. Does anyone else have this issue? The quality of the water is fine, its moreso an aesthetic thing.
Thanks!
