How do I plan my 4 years in college and potentially masters abroad

I am a student in India, studying Electronics and Computer Engineering with specialization in AI and ML, about to enter into my 3rd semester. I have a great interest in avionics of an aircraft, but don't know how to get started in it and the kind of skills to gain in order to make into the industry. r/avionics r/aviation r/ECE r/aerospace r/AerospaceEngineering r/uavs r/technology r/AskEngineers

KNI-520 replaced with GI-275?

I am planning on getting a GI-275 which will replace a KNI-520. The problem is, the GI-275s knob is on the opposite side as the 520

Any Ideas on what to do with this? Would it just be easiest to use a washer to cover the old cutout for the knob?

Standardisation of crimp terminals

Hello knowledgeable people. I'm new to this field and I'm asking for best practice ideas.

When adding/upgrading instruments to older aircraft electrical systems, requiring adding to the existing wiring loom... must any new ring crimp terminals be of a very strict type, or can some approved range of crimp connectors be used in retrofits? This would be in the UK.

I'm aiming to start avionics certification this year, after a lifetime in electronic design.

Question about Fire fighter aircrafts and military cargo planes that drop water/equipments during flight

Fire fighting aircrafts and some military cargo planes drop water/equipments during flight, thus reducing weight and shifting center of gravity. I’m just curious how these planes still allows smooth and steady pitch during those operations. Is there an auto stab system and FMCs that incorporate those weight shifts or crew just gotta hand fly it and adjust it?

Do you need to have a associate degree to become a avonics bench technician?

Right now I'm thinking of going to trade school to get a career studies certificate in either computer and Electronics Technology or electronics technician then getting my AET certificate and was wondering before I do if I need to get an associate's degree instead of going to trade school

GPS 175 to GTX 345?

I have a Garmin GI 275 MFD/CDI hooked via Ethernet to a Garmin GPS 175 and GDL 69. I would like to also hook the GPS 175 to a GTX 345 transponder so it can provide GPS position data to the transponder and the transponder can send ADS-B weather and traffic to the GPS 175.

Can this be done using the ARINC 429 in and out ports or RS232? Would it be better to hook the GTX 345 via Ethernet to the GDL 69, which would then have a connection via the GI 275 to the GPS 175?

What Kind of Careers Could I Transfer Into

I'm an avionics guy in the military weighing whether I'd want to move back to my homestate or to stay in the current area I'm at since there are some avionics jobs in the area. I have 6 years of experience, most of my time was spent on the communication and navigation systems. The best I've seen so far in my hometown is a job that calls for testing equipment with oscilloscopes and other electrical equipment, with basic knowledge in RF and EMI. Other than that I don't see much.

In my local area there's a lot of contracting positions and some aviation companies. I've gotten tons of messages for the contracting positions. Thank you.

UAT Console - anyone?

For reasons I don't want to go into, I find myself in need of NavWorx' UAT Console program so I can get this ADS-B receiver configured.

Edit: Someone came through!

Should anyone need a copy in the future, DM me. I have about 1TB of no-longer-published manuals for aviation obscura, including several configuration programs like this one.

All the usual caveats apply: Blah Blah legal don't install in certificated aircraft without current dox, etc. but, if you're hard up trying to troubleshoot something, old info is better than no info.

Do you need a avonics degree to work in avionics?

Right now, I'm looking at getting a certificate in computer & electronics or going to trade school for basic Electronics Technician. Or even getting an aircraft electronics certified out of state, I'm wondering which one would be best or if you even need an avionics degree to go into avionics

Degrees to get if I want to go into avionics?

I know it's a bit of a stupid question I'm just really lost right now since I've been told not to go to AIM and get it from and go to community college instead

Beginner kit for electrical work

I’m an apprentice at a avionics hangar, my problem is I seriously lack skills in electrical stuff, I’ve never used a soldering iron before, never wired anything together, so I need to learn, they’re teaching me here but I want to learn at home too, do you have any good kits online (I don’t care about price) that I can use to get more familiar with the type of work I’ll be doing

Experimental avionics

I am no mechanic, engineer or programmer of any kind, let alone one who knows anything about aircraft Avionics. What I am is a pilot, one who flies for personal and professional.

When I'm not flying the certified stuff, I'm either building, modifying or flying the experimental stuff. Kit builds, amateur builds, etc.

During the course of engaging with the experimental stuff, you see all manner of things, but you rarely ever see experimental avionics and avionic systems that aren't from the big companies. Garmin, Dynon, etc.

Since the whole theme of experimental aircraft is going off the beaten path, how hard would it be to build or have someone else more qualified build you an experimental Avionics system with stuff you would normally find in bigger commercial aircraft. Something along the lines of what Avilution is doing with their XFS (Xtensible Flight System).

If I wanted something as simple as a PFD with artificial horizon or synthetic vision to something more extensive, like a 3 screen system that looks like the Honeywell Epic 2.0 with autothrottle, electronic circuit breakers and electronic switches (for on screen stuff like flaps, deice, etc)

Is that something that's doable or am I overreaching?

Breaking into Avionics for eVTOL Development as a FullTime Student

So I’m a full-time student and prior military service member with no aviation experience, but I’m really passionate about becoming an engineer in avionics specifically for the eVTOL industry that’s developing.
Here’s my situation:

  • I’m currently pursuing an associate degree in electronics technology.
  • After that, I plan finish a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics, with a focus on learning how to fly and expanding my aviation knowledge.

I’m eager to make myself as attractive as possible to future employers in the avionics field, particularly in engineering roles focused on the development side.
My Questions:

  1. What steps should I take in addition to school to strengthen my skills and experience for a career in avionics?
  2. Are there any part-time jobs, internships, or roles I can pursue right now that would help me learn the basics and gain relevant experience while I’m still in school for the next four years?
  3. What certifications, programs, or resources would you recommend I explore to make myself a stronger candidate for avionics roles in the eVTOL industry? I’m open to any advice you can share—from technical skills to hands-on opportunities or networking tips. Thank you for your time and guidance! Looking forward to your insights!

Tone tracers for mapping/verifying uncertain wiring looms?

Hi, I'm working on upgrading a few instruments in a vintage aircraft. We have the original wiring diagrams, and only partial info on how a previously successful upgrade was installed on an identical aircraft.

To assist mapping exactly what we must duplicate, I'm hoping that a tone tracer will help me confirm point to point connections more easily than a continuity check, especially when probing the expected points directly doesn't check out. A tone tracer should let me hunt where the wire in question actually goes!

So, do any of you use tone tracers on aircraft looms, and if so which types would you recommend please? I'm about to order what looks like an entry level model to try out, see how we go. But long term, I'd like to get the best available. Thankyou!

Differences between GDL 69 models?

I am looking at different models of the GDL 69 and it looks like you can get a lot of them on eBay for around $300? Why are they selling so cheap? It looks like there is a difference in features between newer and older GDL69 models (I know the difference between the GDL 69 and the 69A). It looks like one is XM vs SXM?

UH-60L AHRU DHDG bar looses Null

When AHRU is turned, every is normal until it suddenly looses null and deflect completely to the positive position.

After replacing some components flux valve, control unit, and AHRU, fault remains. Schematics seem to be out of date and not adapted for single gyro use.

Any tips on the most likely solution? Current suspected problem is a wire harness.

Looking for career advice

I’ve been in the Army for five and a half years, and I am a 15F aircraft electrician and I love this job and seem good at it, but I feel like I have just scratched the surface of avionics. I have been able to get my FCC GROL, AET, and FOE certifications. I’m thinking about getting out this next year and using my GI bill to either go to school to become an electrical engineer or just get my A&P. I’m from Knoxville, Tn and am a Vols fan and would love to go UT for EE. I think I’m smart enough, but to be honest I’m not sure if I can do it. I only have my GED because I was a stupid teen and was in boys homes that didn’t give me high school credits. So as far as education I made it to the 10th grade. I think I am capable but also intimidated by college. Looking for help to choose whether I should do the A&P or EE degree.

Garmin GA35 vs GA36

We currently have a non WAAS GPS installed with ARINC 743 foot print. Upgrading to IFD 540 so GA 36 seems like ideal replacement. From all I see it should work with IFD 540 and the only maior difference I see is supported frequencies as compared to GA 35(1575 +10 vs 1575 +/- 10 for GA35) . Anything else I should consider?

GMA 35c audio panel for big install

Hello guys I'm doing an installation with GMA 35c, dual GTN 750s, dual GTX 335r, and 4 GI 275. I'm running into 2 problems here

  1. Not enough slots for audio alert. There are only 4 while I need 8.
  2. They want to install 6 passenger headsets. Again not enough since GMA allows a maximum of 4.

If anyone knows how to solve this please let me know. Tia

Breaking into avionics as a EE

good morning i am currently in a electrical engineering program in university here in Pennsylvania and I've been super interested in getting into avionics. Yesterday I attended a career fair from the FAA about their techops electronic engineers and technicians jobs. I am wondering how I can gain experience in working with radar systems and flight electronics. I became interested in this field when getting my part 107 license and studying to be a A&P Mech but that was shortlived.
