Hey folks,
I currently have a pretty cheap Giant ATX mountain bike and I've been looking to upgrade in the next few months. I'm sussing out various options, but I do know I would like a stiffer bike with rigid fork, because I very very rarely go off sealed roads (though Melbourne roads aren't always super smooth), and preferably a single chainring in the front for simplicity. Current bike has some pretty average Tourney 3x7 gears, but I never change down off the third ring in the front gears, so I figure a 1x10 or similar makes more sense)
I had been looking at a Polygon Tambora G4 (Microshift Advent 1x10), or Triban GRVL120 (Microshift XLE 1x10), but then in a similar price bracket is the Triban RC 520 with Shimano 105 groupset.
I've never ridden a bike with 105 but I keep hearing about how solid it is, how readily available the spare parts are etc but I just don't know if it's overkill, and by buying a bike with 105s am I potentially making concessions in other components of the bike?
Also, there's a good chance I'm rambling and wildly overthinking this, so please feel free to tell me so and bring me back to earth a bit :P
probably gonna go to 99 Bikes in-store and scope out feels right but your input would be appreciated.
should I go for something like the pedal Hornet 2 or would that be too small for me? I'm 6ft 2 and that bike is advertised for kids so idk if id be too old or if that's just advertising, I understand these bikes can be small to allow for more maneuverability.
Hi guys I’ve been looking at a few mountain bikes and have rounded them down to two main options just wondered if someone could analyse their tech (specifically if the suspension is proper or simply a gimmick) to see which is the highest quality. My choices are
https://www.progearbikes.com.au/products/surge-hardtail-mountain-bike-26-black
I understand these are pretty low quality bikes but my parents refuse to purchase second hand things for some reason and my budgets pretty tight. So if someone could please tell me which is better it’d be a godsend
So i am based in adelaide, I am thinking of getting a cycle only for getting point A to B and do some grocessories , and to work. According my calculations, everything I need to day to day basis is within 2-3km as i live near cbd. so recommendations on what and where to buy, and also what to look for when buying.
174 cm/ about 5'9 tall, daily ride distance 2-3 km mostly flat
budget around $200.
is facebook market place good place to start with?
Hi all,
I'm currently in the market for a gravel bike with a budget ~$1000. Only looking to ride casually on road and trail.
I've searched this sub and saw a post (which I now cannot find) a few days back recommending the Polygon Bend R2 https://bikesonline.com.au/products/2024-polygon-bend-r2-650b-gravel-bike so this is the current favourite.
I'm also interested in buying in the second hand market if I can get more bang for my buck. I am Sydney based.
Would appreciate any advice. Cheers.
I've spent the last couple of months trying to find something decent and in my price range, I have scarring in my heart so its performance is sketchy but I need to improve my cardio and with a pacemaker and a few shocks from it means I can't drive a car. So it'd be my main mode of transportation to just get around and get to work.
I live in Albury in regional NSW and the very few bike stores we have here, I feel are ridiculously expensive, so online might be my only option, I've been thinking e-bike to help me when I'm on an off day or if I push myself to hard I'd have that as a back up. I'm not looking to spend any more than $1500.
If anyone can help me out with some information or recommendations I'd greatly appreciate it!
Someone just dumped a bike outside my house. Called the police and reported it but to my disbelief they won't do anything with the bike - isn't it literally their job to deal with stolen goods? Thought they would come and collect it and try to find the owner. Very disappointing. I had a bike stolen once and it sucks, so I would like to help get it back to its owner. I checked on bike vault and a local Facebook group and can't see any reports of it being stolen. Is there anything else I can do?
As the title said, I'm looking to purchase a bike to commute to and from work.
My commute is pretty short (7km or 4.3ish miles) but its hilly and there are places where you can't avoid sand. I've ridden this route before many times but I've only done it on a k-mart bike (it's now 7 years old lmao) and it really takes it out of me (although I don't know if that's me being physically weak or my bike being in terrible shape which is also the reason why I'm looking to buy a new bike).
I've literally no idea about buying a bike since the only time I went to buy a bike was to buy that k-mart bike 7 years ago.
I'm thinking about an 800 AUD budget but I can go higher if I want (1.5k).
Hi All,
Was thinking of getting a top tube bag suitable for carrying keys, wallet, phone, a spare tube & a few tools for my MTB. Was checking out this one from Rockbros, however not sure how stable/secure they are or if they get in the way more than they are worth.
Any recommendations or advice on either on this Rockbros or other bags?
Merida Scultura is for sale here for $988
The Marin is for sale here - (although out of stock) for $899
I like the wider wheels of the Marin but not familiar with either brand. Looking for something to go around Melbourne, commuting/road usage.
I like the look of the Polygon Strattos S4 but can only see the disk model in Aus
Appreciate any suggestions or alternatives
Hard limit of $1k tho
I need to replace a set of Suntour M3030 forks on a e-bike used for street touring only. I'm thinking non-suspension forks would be fine, not to mention lighter, cheaper and less maintenance. Any suggestions what to get?
Hi all, I'm currently on a trip from Brisbane to Sydney. Everything has gone well up to now but I'm unsure of my route from here. Ideally Id like to avoid the Pacific Highway but I'm not confident in the other options. Has anyone cycled tfrom Woodburn to Grafton via the Whiporie/Bungawalbin road or know where I can find out? It looks paved but locals don't know much about it and can't tell me much about it. Thanks 🙏
I’m selling a brand-new battery for the Fiido C11 e-bike. This is the upgraded version with the silver button.
I originally received this as an extra by mistake when I ordered a Fiido T1, so I don’t have any use for it. It’s completely unused and ready to go.
Price: AU$330 (includes postage anywhere in Australia)
Shipping: Available Australia-wide. I'm not sure whether this can be shipped overseas via air post.
If you’re looking for a replacement or backup battery for your Fiido C11, this is a great deal.
Hi friends.
I want to buy an e-bike to get to and from work but I have not the faintest idea about how the specs work, and am overwhelmed by the huge number of options. On the same vein, I also want something that’s as low maintenance as possible. Like, I wouldn’t even know how to change a tyre level low maintenance.
Happy to spend up to 4K however I hold obviously prefer lower if possible. My ride is only about 7km however there’s some relatively steep hills in it, hence why I’m looking at an e-bike.
So far in my limited research I’ve found the following:
Lekker Jordaan GTS - seems to be low maintenance but some reviews say it struggles with hills and drops in performance with battery <60% - https://lekkerbikes.com.au/products/jordaan-gts-ebike
Cleverly Commuter S - pro is that they have a shop in my city if there’s any issues, and the specs seem to be ?the same? As the lekker, but idk really - https://www.cleverley.com.au/products/commuter-s
Mamba Venom - ?? I don’t know, it was advertised to me and it looked speedy and cheap with good reviews, but maybe for a reason? - https://www.pedl.com.au/products/mamba-venom-48v-750w-15ah-17ah-high-powered-electric-bike
I realise this has been asked a lot but I am truly at a loss and honestly am not smart enough to make this decision for myself please send help.
Hi friends,
I am looking for a bike for occasional ride in suburbs with an intention to carry 1.5 year old kid with front mounted seat.. Any advice please what should I buy? Thanks
Any recommendations for shipping companies to ship a bike interstate. Ideally insured. Thanks
Edit: Thanks for all the really helpful advice! Grabbed a Giant Cross City Disc.
Hi everyone,
I’m keen to start cycling to work and I’m after recommendations for what bike I should grab. Some context:
I’m > 190 cm tall
I’ll mostly be using it for a ~10km round trip commute to work in Canberra on roads and dedicated bike lanes.
Budget is not really an issue but below $1,500 would be nice. Given that this will replace the bus as my primary mode of transportation I’m happy to shell out.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. If there’s a buying guide I’ve missed then feel free to point me over there instead. Cheers.
Cycling fans, it’s time to take a stand. Channel Seven’s coverage of the Tour Down Under has been nothing short of disappointing: • Too many ads disrupting the action. • Hosts with little knowledge about cycling, leaving fans frustrated. • A lackluster experience for one of Australia’s premier sporting events.
The Tour Down Under deserves better—coverage that showcases the excitement, the strategy, and the world-class athletes who make this race special. We need a network that respects the sport and its fans.
I’ve started a petition to stop Channel Seven from buying the broadcasting rights again. If you care about quality cycling coverage and want to see real change, please sign and share. Together, we can protect the integrity of this incredible event.
Hey Folks,
Bike newbie here!!
With a pretty stuffed lower back [and very long legs], so I need a more upright ride for my 45 min commute on mostly paved road with some minimal track riding.
I've done a HEAP of research and have got my choices down to:
Orbea Carpe 10 [amazing deal] vs
Giant Cross City 2022 Equipped vs
Giant Cross City 2025 Equipped.
Oh... I will be instantly moding with a stem riser for the handlebars.
Thanks in advance for your help buds!!
If anyone may remember a few months ago, I posted about going to court to contest a bicycle stop sign infringement, I’m happy to announce that the $387 fine was dismissed.
Seemingly, both the prosecutor and magistrate felt like this was a waste of time and had no interest in pursuing the actions of the police officer!
Some interesting notes/observations from my experience:
The Police prosecutor didn’t even read my submissions, i.e. apology letter and character reference. When it was handed to them, they said they read it already (which is impossible) and mentioned that they have no issues with the magistrate reading it - This is good, since it means they were not interested in looking inconsistencies with the submission.
The prosecutor did not prepare a submission against me to make - good, as the prosecutor sometimes gather photos or other evidence used to challenge the accused’s defence.
After reading the apology letter and character reference the magistrate did not any chance to offer an explanation as to why the offence occurred, the magistrate mentioned that the level of the offending was low, and no prior traffic convictions so dismissed the fine.
It was a waste of day but a very good outcome. Remember to obey all road rules when cycling!
Other notes:
I think both the police prosecutor and magistrate knew the nature of this case was clearly very trivial and wanted to get it dismissed as soon as possible. While they both were following the procedures of the court, they also understood that the case of a bicycle not coming to a complete stop was a farce.
Considering every other case that day was a driving offence including some very serious ones - i.e. speeding offences - 30 to 50km over the speed limit and endangering the community/other drivers, they had no interest at all in pursuing a minor bicycle offence.
While I am a little disappointed, I didn’t get a chance to explain myself in court despite spending so much time preparing, I am even more happy that both the magistrate and prosecutor had no interest in enforcing the actions of a bicycle hating police officer!
Edit: I can tell that this thread has people very divided. My final note is that if you think the law has been unfairly applied, then if you take it to court, you have a good chance of being successful.
As title says - im toying with idea of getting a gravel bike, keen for my first drop bar bike, and this one popped up for me because i need a XL size given im a tall rider. Anyone know much about this bike? Seems to be well priced at $1050 with 99bikes.
Hi all. Looking for commuter style bikes around 10kg to keep the weight down on my caravan. Budget $1000-2000. Not many websites list bike weights. Anyone been down this path or have recommendations?
Trek Marlin 5 Gen 2 $749 Giant Talon 4 $799
Which one is good? Or are they both bad?
Hey everyone! I'm taking my road bike on a plane for the first time using a Thule hard case. Any advice in terms of the airport and baggage allowance? Am I better stuffing everything in the box? Or taking a separate carry on? And other tips?
I've seen these two bikes the Fatboy Scrambler and the Ace-Pro separately and across YouTube but never a comparison. I haven't seen a Fatboy in Mbourne yet but I've seen about 30 Ace-Pro bikes, does anyone have a recommendation on either? Cheers
