Please help me find an old audiobook

Just a couple things to note before I begin:

  1. I have ADHD and I’m horrible at writing coherent sentences - so I’m sorry if this doesn’t make sense.
  2. I’m from the UK.
  3. I’m writing on mobile if the formatting/typing is weird.

SO, when I was a child, I used to have a massive collection of audiobooks (CD’s). Now, as an adult, I am now trying to find all of my old favourite audiobooks to listen to on my phone. My favourite audiobook was ‘Princess Mirror-Belle’ by Julia Donaldson. This included a lot of stories - and was the first publication of the series. The version of this that I used to own was read by June Whitfield - you know, the lady from Ab Fab - and I can’t find the original recording of this book ANYWHERE! I wonder if it’s because she passed away in 2018? The only versions I can find online are read by Sophie Thompson - and I own these versions on iBooks. But I’d love to hear the June Whitfield again - even if it’s on a CD. Please can you, lovely detectives of Reddit, help me find this?

Note: I’ve emailed the publishers (MacMillan digital audio) and am waiting for a response.

Route 66 - would love a good audiobook series to listen to while driving

My partner and I are planning to do a route 66 drive this summer looking for an audiobook series we can listen to pass some of the driving time.

Some authors/series we've listened to and really enjoyed include Stephen King, Matt Dinnimen, Hank Green, LOTR, GoT, hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy, red rising, Themis files, Brandon Sanderson is a favourite of mine but not so much of my partners... I'm sure there are more but that's what I can think of.

We didn't enjoy the expanse, wheel of time and three body problem.

I'm thinking The Dresden Files but I'd like options incase it flops.

TIA

King Solomon’s Mines (Narrator)

I see there are a lot of choices out there for the narrator of King Solomon’s Mines. Is there a favorite out there of which one you listened to and enjoyed (or even if you have past experience with one of the below narrators and have enjoyed)? I see Stefan Rudnicki, Bill Homewood, Toby Stephens, Jack Sondericker, Patrick Tull, Simon Prebble, and Toby Scott McLellan.

pop nonfiction recommendations?

I started a job a few months ago that involves a lot of waiting for people to need me. I’ve been trying out listening to different kinds of things, & I’m finding that pop nonfiction works pretty well in this context, because I’m les likely to get lost when I pause it & resume it, because I don’t really have to follow plot.

Some examples of books I’ve enjoyed recently: -Cultish by Amanda Montell -Sure I’ll Join Your Cult by Maria Bamford -You Look Like A Thing & I Love You by Janelle Shane -Alphabetical Diaries by Sheila Heti -I’m Afraid Of Men by Vivek Shraya -& i’m currently listening to Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer

I like to learn about all kinds of things, but I don’t want anything too heavy while I’m working. Funny or otherwise punchy & engaging is great. Shorter is better, especially since I get audiobooks mainly through my library for a 2 week lending period & only really go through them at the pace I have lag time at work, & I have hella ADHD so I’ll switch it up with podcasts & music too. 8 hours is kinda the upper limit for me usually. I’m not interested in financial advice & most self-help is a nah for me but memoirs, books of essays, & books about writing are all in my wheelhouse.

Song of Myself by Walt Whitman (set to peaceful, relaxing music; 12 hours; YouTube)

Walt Whitman Poetry with Calm Nature Music 🎵 "Song of Myself" FULL AUDIOBOOK for Sleeping, Relaxing - YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3OsFM2Lf4I

I am neither the author nor the narrators of this performance, although this audiobook does feature original music posted to my personal YouTube channel. I produced this version so I could have something to relax/fall asleep to, or to have playing in the background of a long day to myself when I'm alone in the house :). Let me know what you think!

What did you listen to this week – May 11, 2024? Please share!

So did you listen to anything good this week? Or something so truly terrible you want to warn other listeners?

Please include the following information: Author, Title and Narrator.

Why does identifying the Narrator matter?

Often books will be recorded with different narrators for different regions (ie. Harry Potter was read by both Jim Dale and Stephen Fry) or produced by different publishers (ie... Elizabeth Moon's books were produced by both Graphic Audio and Tantor). It is extremely helpful to other listeners to know what version you are sharing to avoid confusion.

Links to a source are welcomed and encouraged!

Overdrive, Audible, Downpour, Librivox, etc... It doesn't matter the source, as long as the Author, Title and Narrator are easily identified.

ABOUT

When Colorado's thriving legalized marijuana industry faces an unexpected threat, it comes not from politicians or police but from a shadowy Canadian biker gang with a vested interest in seeing the industry fail. Led by the relentless Raison and his unhinged brother, Rage, the Dead Wolves MC launches a meticulously planned heist on the state's premier cannabis security firm, Green Zone Defense (GZD).

But GZD's security, bolstered by the enigmatic Mason, isn't easily overrun. A chess match of tactics, bravery, and betrayal unfolds, revealing a deeper conspiracy to influence national opinion on marijuana legalization. As the GZD guards, each with their unique skill sets and backstories, fight to protect their ground, they come face-to-face with the violent resolve of their adversaries.

From explosive ambushes to heart-wrenching losses, "The Wolf and the Lion" offers an intense dive into the dangerous intersections of ambition, loyalty, and business. As the line between friends and foes blurs, one thing becomes clear: survival is the only victory in this high-stakes game.

Are there any services that offer and eBook with the purchase of an audiobook?

I have ADHD so I have a hard time reading books because Ill start reading on autopilot if I get destracted thinking avout something else. Audiobooks have solved that for the most part, but Ive found myself having to rewind if Im not actively doing something while I listen.

That's why I've starting looking for any subscription services or bundle offers that would allow me to get a book in both versions. Does anyone know if this is possible/has anyone seen something like this?

I imagine I'll just have to buy the books separately, but it would be great to find something like this because I used to love reading, but recently I haven't been able to.

Thanks for any suggestions!

(additional info just in case: I do already have an Audible subscription but I just learned about Kubo today so I may switch subscriptions)

Recent breakthrough in commercial AI voices is impressive, soon audioboos will be democratized!

Listen to this:

https://youtu.be/y1h2oSOP4L0?si=cdGHB138cADFexDI

It's using the most recent Eleven Labs voices. Not only the voice sounds natural, now it understands the context so it knows which words to stress, when to pause and when to talk faster. People in the comments think the voice is actually coming from a human, it's pretty entartaining to read them!

The Worldly Philosophers by Robert L. Heilbroner

I have been told this is an excellent listen by my dad. But he listened to it on CD 15 years ago. My library no longer has a physical copy and as far as I can tell there isn't a digital version for sale ( Audible and Audiobooks.com don't have one). Blackstonelibrary.com seems to sell a physical copy to libraries. Does anyone know where I can buy a copy?

(PROMO GIVEAWAY) The Fall of Man (Sci-Fi & Apocalypse Novel)

Hello everyone,

I just released my debut standalone novel and I would love to get some honest reviews on the story.

Premise: The protagonist is the creator of the robots that turn on humanity, and we see him cope with his failure and need to adapt to the new reality.

What separates this book from others like it, is that the protagonist doesn't come to some realization that he needs to embrace his humanity and not be like cold, calculated, unloving robots. Instead, the robots are programmed with human instincts, and we see that the robots are debatably more human than the humans.

Theme: And with that said, the book takes on the difficult question of 'why bother going on when everything sucks.’ And it gives an answer that is surprisingly sufficient to the question. Not one that you can roll your eyes at, like... 'love is the answer', but one that becomes clear by the end of the book and can give you peace/guidance when things are rough. I hope you read it if you struggle with that kind of question.

https://www.amazon.com/Fall-Man-Novel-Mitchell-White-ebook/dp/B0CHJJ2C5C/

If you are interested in a free audiobook in exchange for an honest review, comment below if you need a US or UK code. I have 25 US and 25 UK codes available.

Thanks!

Edit: The audiobook is a full cast (each character is narrator by a unique voice). I know that rubs some people the wrong way so I wanted to put that out there.

What does it mean when an voice coach describes a narrator’s voice as strong and diverse?

And that their ability to embody at moments is powerful

Is there a voice actor/narrator that is so good that you would listen to an audiobook specifically for his/her performance?

I know he’s not a full time VA but I would go with Neil Gaiman. He is one of the only writers that can actually narrate his own books. How about you?

What book do you think you could do a pretty good job of narrating? And/or - which book would you love to *be able* to do a good rendition of?

I think I would do the most passable job at reading a good non-fiction/commentative book such as A Short History of Nearly Everything (B. Bryson) as this wouldn't involve having to vocally portray a whole cast of characters. I think I could do a reasonable job of communicating the humour in the book, too.

If I were able to do a good job of performing a whole range of characters (which I'm not) I would love to do one of my favourite fantasy novels such as A Promise of Blood (B. McClellan) or A Wizard of Earthsea (U. LeGuin).

Thanks for any responses!

Audiobooks About Conspiracies and Audiobooks by Conspiracy Theorists

What are the names of the books that you've read that were about conspiracies that were or weren't written by Conspiracy Theorists? Were they good reads, did they make you think and ask yourself questions, and were they good books in your honest opinions? An inquiring mind wants to know. Thanks.

Recommendations for my commute

I typically read books on a kindle, but I now have a longer commute and would love some good audiobook recommendations.

I typically lean more toward fantasy, but I like a good action or thriller, and am open to anything people love. Some series I've read recently and really like: Cradle by Wight, Cinder Spires and Dresden Files both by Butcher, Licanius Trilogy and Will Of The Many by Islington, anything by Sanderson, Murderbot Diaries by Wells, Mitch Rapp series by Flynn. Those are just an example.

Reading through this sub I already listened to Dungeon Crawler Carl (whole series) and Project Hail Mary and loved both. I've seen other recommendations, but figured I'd post with some I've liked in the past in case that helps tailor any advice.

Thanks so much!

Audiobooks for family road trips?

Going on a long cross country road trip with my husband. He is very picky about what he listens to in the car. In the past, I’ve had luck with him enjoying nonfiction books such as Bad Blood and Apollo as well as fantasy such as Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Any recommendations for good, interesting read?

Books with Irish Narrators

Recommendation for audiobooks with Irish narrators?

I just started listening to “Long Island” by Colm Tóibín, and I love Graham Nortons’ books, and I realized that books with Irish narrators really keep me engaged. The books I have read a very good books no matter who narrates them so that is part of it, but I also think it’s just because it’s an accent different than my own. I also just love an Irish accent.

Audiobooks on a budget?

Hello, I'm a avid reader but recently listened to my first audio series in Dungeon Crawler Carl.

I loved these books and was willing to spend the money to listen to them. However, Ive listened to all 6 books in 2 weeks and not sure its good value for money to continue spending £5-8ish per book when it only lasts a few days.

As i spend a far bit of time driving this is something i want to get into.

Suggestions for cheap audiobooks?

I dont necessarily mean free or anything illegal.

Thank you.

Probably unpopular opinion-Anybody else hates full cast/dramatizations?

I feel like as soon as there’s somebody else other than the narrator I’m not “reading” anymore and the whole thing feels like watching netflix. I am always conscious of the fact that all reading (narrating) is an interpretation and the narrator adds that personal interpretation of the text that we add ourselves when reading rather than listening. The thing is that when there’s more people mediating between the text and myself I feel like I’m missing something! Thoughts?
