About

The Atari 8-bit family is a series of 8-bit home computers manufactured from 1979 to 1992. Overall, the Atari 8-bit computer line was a commercial success, selling two million units during its major production run between late 1979 and mid-1985,[2] putting its sales on par with machines like the Sinclair ZX Spectrum and TI-99/4A. Its primary competition in the worldwide market was the Commodore 64, by far the best selling computer of the 8-bit era.

Just wanted to post a shout-out to B&C Computervisions

Some months ago, my father's old 800 with customized OS (supposedly it was made XL compatible, but I never really tested it), and RAM upgrade quit working. I mean, completely. Black screen, but I think the power light came on. Thinking it might be that weird OS board, I ordered an original one from Bruce, but didn't have a chance to get the 800 back out and try it, until tonight. Bingo, that was the problem. I should probably test the RAM upgrades too, but I'm just happy to have the family's oldest computer (1983) working again.

Ghostbusters on Atari 400

I apologize in advance if this is a noobie question, but has anyone ever ran “Ghostbusters” on an Atari 400 with 48k ram installed? I have a “The Brewing Academy”’s ultimate Atari cartridge and want to know if there is a way to run it on that. I also know that it originally came out on floppy, so would I need a floppy drive emulator or is there a version converted to cartridge format? I appreciate any help on this.

Newbie question about games on the Atari 400

Aussie here who’s just nailed a (PAL) Atari 400 computer looking for advice from any owners from the UK or other PAL regions. I know there isn’t “region lock” on the Atari 8-bits, but I’ve seen posts online regarding oddities playing NTSC games on PAL systems, and so I’m here looking for some answers from those in the know.

  • How do NTSC Atari 400 games play on a PAL 400?

  • Say, if I bought a copy of Pac-Man for the 400 from America,

  • Is there any colour differences from what they typically should be?

  • Is the game in the wrong colors?

  • Is performance affected?

  • Anything else to be concerned about?

  • Or is there no real noticeable difference at all?

  • Are XE-specific games incompatible (could say, the XEGS version of BattleZone work) or can this be solved by adding extra RAM (currently at 32k)

Any and all clarification is appreciated.

Atari 400 mini questions

Hi, Is it possible to run my old 800 games and programs on this? Is there a basic interpreter I can boot into? USB floppy drive and cartridge reader? I did search and saw it has no cartridge port, but maybe someone is selling a USB cartridge reader? Or a usb floppy drive? My keyboard is going out on my Atari 800.

HELP! Can't get laptop keyboard to work as a controller!

I am using the latest Atari800macX emulator on my MacBook Pro and for some reason my keyboard no longer works as a controller. I simply want to use the arrow keys as a joystick and another key, preferably the space bar as the fire button. I've tried all the different settings and troubleshooted and nothing works. It's always worked until now. What do I do?!

The full (unsnipped by Kickstarter) pic of our model with the 800XL case

Many have noticed the homage to the Steve Jobs Mac photo from back in the day, wanted to share the full unedited photo that we did as a hat tip to Steve

Did any of you use this program or still use it and if so how good was or is it?.

https://www.page6.org/archive/issue_15/page_26.htm It's supposed be a fastloader for cassette tapes but I don't know that much about it and I can't try it out because I haven't got the recorder and Altirra crashes if I try to use it.

USB-C PD for 8 bit consoles

After not being able to find anything on the market that would work with a modern power delivery brick (as opposed to usb-micro or a raspberry pi brick) I decided to design my own. It will take output from a PD brick that supports 5v (usually written on side of brick) and step down the power for the console. They can be purchased from this link (will take 2-3 weeks for delivery): https://py.pl/1dcoSd

Can't find name of 800XL game with floating TVs and toilets!

As a kid I played this game on ATARI 800XL with static gameplay screens. When you reach the edge of the screen, it would freeze and scroll to the next screen. There were animated household items floating around in space, including a toilet with a flopping lid, a TV with dancing antennas, and others.

I remember them as being "dangerous".

.

AFAIK you were some kind of spaceship who sought keys and progressed from level Alpha to Beta to Delta to Gamma, etc etc.

The sounds were echo-y somehow. Weird, otherworldly.

.

ChatGPT totally failed to figure out what this game was. Does anyone remember it?

Revive Machines?

I found this "Revive Machines" a year ago and recently checked in to see if there are any updates. It looks like the site hasn't been updated recently either. I so want to believe there is possibly an updated hardware with compatibility (not emulation?) and compatibility with hardware too...

My Atari 800xl failed the ram test. Is this the correct ram to buy?

photo of the ram chips

The Antic chip says CO21697

I read that the Micron (MT) chips are not good quality. It seems like these might be a suitable replacement. Thoughts?

Also if anybody knows a Canadian seller, let me know, I couldnt find one.

Atari Home computer cartridge book

My friend Scott and I have been working for a couple of years on a cartridge book that will showcase as many known titles from America and around the world. This book will include all known cartridge and label variants as well as focusing on demos, diagnostic, samples, prototypes and more.

What we are currently looking for is photo donations of cartridges we do not have. Rarer utility title, prototypes , shell and label variants are welcomed.

If you have a cartridge that you think would help the book and want to send a photo over please get in contact with me. We can add your name to the books credits page.

DIY 1050-2-PC cable / plug?

Has anyone built their own 1050-2-PC cable / plug for their Atari 8-bit? I have a LOT of 5" floppies that I'd like to access and archive. I know there's the one from Lotharek (https://lotharek.pl/productdetail.php?id=157) but I'd like to build my own if I can since FT232RL boards are cheap and I have a 3D printer that I can use to print the plug end. I've found a couple websites for making your own SIO2PC plugs/cables (https://retrohax.net/shorts-diy-sio2pc-for-8-bit-atari/) but not for the 1050-2-PC cables. Thanks!

Games that work with touch controls

I just installed Colleen onmyy phone. The emulator controls work very well but most of my favorite games (zybex, krazy shootout etc ) require such precision that playing on the phone is not possible without a physical controller or keyboard. Can anyone recommend any games?

Want to purchase an 800xl

Hello Everybody!

I have been wanting to purchase myself an Atari system for a while, but I get nervous shopping online for something I am not knowledgeable about. I landed on an Atari 800xl. Is there a particular online retailer I should look for, or should I just shop on eBay? Also, what peripherals would you recommend/are required to use the system? I mostly just wish to write BASIC programs and save them; I am aware of floppy’s and cassette, would either of those work? To my understanding, BASIC is built into the board, so that is not a worry, correct?

Thanks a bunch
