For people suffering from relatively high astigmatism and/or those who are interested in discussing the possible causes and potential ways to improve naturally.
/r/astigmatism
i need to schedule an eye doctor appointment so bad. i’m literally 21 years old and i fr cannot see while i’m driving at night. the worst is when it rains, i’m being so fr i have close to no visibility. i cannot see the lines on the road, when any headlights are coming at me from the other side i am damn near blind like i cannot see the road at all, like it’s actually dangerous. I have had perfect vision my whole life and i’m young i don’t know why this is happening but it has gotten so bad in like the last year😭 i haven’t been to the eye doctor since i scratched my cornea in elementary school like i’ve never had a reason to it’s just weird. i’ll be in the car with my friend saying “i cannot see” and he’s like “sam i can see fine, you need to go to the doctor that’s not normal”
I’m 50 yrs old and went to have my eyes examined after years of great vision. However, I started noticing suttle differences in my vision. For example, driving at night and the glare of the traffic lights, LED lights were almost unbearable to look at. My color perception was also off; especially while watching TV. Has anyone else experienced these types of issues? I’m currently waiting on my prescription glasses, (which by the way was crazy high, $500 😵💫)
I recently started noticing ghosting in my vision. I’m not sure if this makes sense, but I feel that I’ve had ghosting in my vision for some time, but I recently came to notice it.
I find it to be most prevalent when I’m staring at a screen (either my phone or TV). The ghosting is the strongest when I’m reading white text with a black background, but I also noticed it in other high contrast settings. I recently got an eye exam and I’m struggling to interpret the results. Does this show that I have an astigmatism?
My astigmatism is at a 1.75 for my right eye, and a 1.25 for my left. Its worse than my myopia which is at like 0.5 and 1.5. Didnt even know what this condition was until now and i feel angry at myself for rubbing my eyes so much throughout my life, and more recently due to some pink eye i got.
This is more or less me just ranting, but I feel so defeated with how bad my eyes have gotten without me being educated on it. Im 27 now, my parents took me to eye doctors maybe once as a kid, and i never had many classes since high school until now to pay attention to my vision. I have my first pair of glasses on the way, but im just feeling down about the whole thing especially cause of how serious and permanent this is. If i was educated i would of done so much more to take care of my eyes.
ive seen so many videos on how people with astigmatism see night light but I dont see night light like that. I have a high astigmatism but it just makes things really blurry. I have to legally drive with my glasses and recently got my license. I actually noticed I don't have star burst without glasses. Things are just blurry. But with glasses I can see clear but I get star burst with lights including lights from the street, bikes and motorcycles. I can't take them off because legally I'm not suppose to drive without my glasses. Does anyone know what can be causing this? Especially since this symptoms is usually said to happen without glasses. I can't see my optometrist until my insurance kicks on in January unfortunately
When I was about twenty, driving down a lonely snow driven highway with my dad I found out a weird quirk.
The car ahead of me was further away and then suddenly a car length or two closer. Then further away. It annoyed my dad when I slowed down in confusion. Now i can do it at will to cars a certain distance ahead of me. Blink to bring the car closer. Blink to send it further away.
Is this familiar to anyone else?
Context: adhd, astigmatism, narrow jaw, poor airway
I just got my first glasses and everything in close looks disproportionate and I can’t see far very well. Also my head hurts a bit. Is this normal, does it take time to get use to new glasses?
So I’ve trialed multiple types of toric contacts for astigmatism and not sure why I can’t find a pair I like… not sure if I’m being too picky or if other people had these issues???
What I’ve tried so far: Daily total 1 - very hydrating, most comfy but unstable/moved around eyes when blinking causing blurriness
Infuse - vision very blurry
Copper Vision My Day- good vision, dry eye with long wear (over 4hrs), blurry in dark settings
Acuvue Oasis - currently trialing now / too soon to tell
**I have a high prescription -5 and -6, contacts good for distance but most aren’t great if I’m reading close up. No issues when wearing my glasses
One of my eyes is much worse than the other and also has astigmatism. I have trouble focusing on far objects with it even with glasses. I don’t really know why, but when I was young, I would rub this eye a lot, sometimes for like up to 30 seconds. Even now that i’m an adult, I still tend to rub that eye a bit. Is it possible that rubbing my eye so much is what caused it to become so much worse than my other eye?
I see people here saying squinting reduces their astigmatism related ghosting, but for me its the contrary, opening my eyes wide makes double images very vivid and at least ten times more visible. For example, when squinting, white text on black background is only slightly ghosting (if im not looking at it from above or below), but with my eyes wide open, I see a vivid image of the text overlapping the line above.
Basically it seems to happen when light hits the very lower and very upper parts of the cornea, but I often see the contrary around here, that squinting makes it worse. Why is that ?
just got new glasses for astigmatism, everything is very crisp and clear now, one problem.
Everything appears stretched, everything looks extra wide, things are much more detailed which is nice, but oh my is the things appearing wider driving me insane.
I tried to look online for anyone struggling with the same thing, and the only one I found had a response saying, “astigmatism causes your brain to see different shapes as squares or circles, when the lenses correct your astigmatism, your brain will adjust and realize that that square is a rectangle, and that circle is an oval”
So this actually what everything actually looks like? This is how everybody actually sees the world?
My face shape looks completely different now when I look at my face in the mirror wearing glasses, my face looks so much wider and shorter due to the prescription of the lenses, and it didn’t help that I was already insecure, everything appearing wider isn’t the issue for me it’s if that how things are actually supposed to look that’s causing me to have a mid-life crisis
I have got astigmatism. These are the values 0.75 cyl axis 150 only in the right eye. My doc told me to either make 0.75 with anti fatigue coating or 0.5 without coating. I got made 0.5 without coating. I am a 35 years old male. It all stared with dry eyes one month back and later on found in the test that I have blurry vision. I do have pain in the right eye specifically on the top of eye where upper eyelid sits. If I close my left eye and see a text there is definitely a little shadow at the bottom of the text shifted slightly towards the right. How should go about it? Can it be healed naturally by doing some exercises?
Please help here. Any knowledge and experience will be appreciated. Thank you
I do know my prescription, but I haven’t worn glasses in a while. Recently went and got a new pair, and while deciding on the prescription, I wound up telling the doctor I wanted a weaker prescription on my right eye (which is worse than my left) because as I was walking around to test it, it was just so clear to the point of dizziness if I wore the “correct” prescription on both eyes.
My right eye is getting a bit watery, and my vision is sometimes blurry when I’m looking at my phone.
I went to a mall eye center because they had a deal going on. I probably should have just went to my old doctor, which got my prescription to a tee. Will this negatively affect my eyes or make my astigmatism better? It’s only been a couple days so maybe my brain hasn’t adjusted yet.
Have you tried doing this, and did anything happen? Sometimes I can really notice the refraction still.
Got my glasses today and Jesus, first at the store I felt like a giant, and today I realized why I am always afraid of hitting stuff with my car, I see things closer than they are
I hope this post belongs here: By "worsening," I guess I really mean changing. About a month ago my contacts were causing a lot of problems with my eyes. At first, my eyes (both - however, only Left has astigmatism) were just red. Eventually, I was very light sensitive and couldn't work some days when it got bad (I work at a computer). Now, the problem is solely in my left eye. I saw my eye dr a couple times and he said the issue was contact related, but suggested it could be the brand of contacts or solution (eventually ruled out the solution being the cause). I've noticed my vision has gotten much worse, everything is blurry and my left eye is seeing double. At my exam yesterday, both eyes needed stronger scripts (just 0.50 difference) but I noticed that the axis for my left changed (it only went from 10 to 20 though. cyl is the same). Could this change cause issues with my contacts?
Hello, I am a 19M. I am experiencing double vision, and the lights from vehicles appear as large beams, making it difficult for me to see. Are these symptoms of astigmatism?
I'm 24M and I have astigmatism (also dyslexic). I recently decided to finally get my driver's license. I needed it for a promotion at work otherwise I don't have a ton of interest driving in my personal life. I've been learning off and on since I was 16 or so but I finally went to the DMV to do my permit test. I failed the machine I test I was given by the examiner. The background caused the letters to starburst but I also got the Os and Cs mixed up along with the Ks and Rs which is what caused me to fail. I was given a waiver for a optometrist to sign. Overall I don't have terrible eye sight. I'm 20/70 20/80 uncorrected and 20/15 corrected. I've had no issues passing standard snellen tests including the one taken for the DL physical.
Has anyone here experienced or heard of similar issues?
Our (nearly) four year old just received glasses for oblique astigmatism. He doesn’t really have myopia, just the astigmatism.
As we understand things the glasses are important to “correct” the way his brain processes his vision so that it doesn’t get accustomed to compensating for the blurry bits in his field of vision. Amblyopia, right? It won’t do anything to fix the physical astigmatism of course. The optometrist also said that by around ten years old it’s probably too late for the brain to make those kinds of adjustments.
We’re still trying to see how he adjusts to wearing glasses. But we can’t help but feel it would be easier for him in another year rather than when he’s not even four.
So, with the recognition that surely “earlier is better”, I was wondering if anyone could attempt to quantify how much worse it would be to delay glasses by a year? That would still give him plenty of runway presumably to reap the benefits from them from a brain development perspective it seems to me as an absolute layman. I guess the only thing that sticks out to me as a reason to really keep pushing the glasses is if the blurriness is quite bad right now, then obviously the glasses would immediately improve his life significantly. If it’s just a little though, then maybe it’s ok to leave them and save everyone a lot of hassle until he’s a bit more mature. He doesn’t seem to have had any vision problems, but I guess that’s hard to gauge at his age.
I don’t actually have the exact prescription, but I believe the cylinder measure was around low- to mid-200s on both eyes. Like I said, no myopia, and it was oblique astigmatism. I’ll call when they’re open tomorrow or Monday and grab the actual prescription if anyone wants it.
Again, I know the best solution is “he needs glasses, he should wear them”. Just looking for a bit of a risk level quantification.
funny enough I find it easier to drive at night. doesn’t astigmatism mainly affect ppl at night? Correct me if I’m wrong!
so I have it in both eyes and my strengths are Left (OS) +0.50 & Right (OD) +0.75 my doc recommended I wear glasses all the time if I want or specifically when I’m driving. Keep in my mind I haven’t bought my glasses yet 😭
And now I’m starting to notice during the daylight especially if there’s no clouds out I’m having like these small glare fuzzy blotches that kinda take up majority of my vision and it’s not that I can’t see but it’s hella weird and kinda hard to describe ifykyk.
The thing is that this doesn’t happen everytime I go outside so it’s very random and it definitely doesn’t happen when I’m inside low lit places I wanna add I usually wear my sunglasses that have UV protection and all that good stuff so you would think those help me a little bit..?
do this mean anything
Hey all!
Long time contact wearer, struggling I think with the toric lenses.
Acuvue advanced were my jam - had bad reactions to vita and oasis.
Have been wearing coopervision biofinity energys.
Last years eye doc didn’t get my scrip right and just kept telling me it was allergies - but the glasses were also wrong.
New doc today nailed the eyeglass scrip.
We are doing the biofinity toric - but the damn things keep rotating (and it’s only been a few hours)
Wondering if my issue is looking down at my phone and that changing the weight and making them rotate more?
Also last year tried some dailies and was not a fan / couldn’t get em outta my eyeballs (any of the brands)
Also I’m 41 and now need a hair of reading correction.
I’d live any stories / insight / thoughts from others with similar contact journeys
Love driving at night and someone gets behind me and brights me(especially with leds), like if anything it’s just gonna want to make me go slower
I recently got new glasses for my oblique astigmatism. My prescription is left eye sph -0.5 cyl -0.5 axis 30 and right eye sph -0.5. I've been wearing them for more than a month, and while they're definitely clearer than my old glasses, I'm still experiencing some discomfort in my left eye.
My eye doctor confirmed that the prescription is correct and said that it might take some time for my eyes to adjust to the new glasses. Is this true? Does anyone else have experience with oblique astigmatism and new glasses? Any tips for easing the discomfort?
i’ve gone for an eye check. my astig is still the same, everything else is still clear with my current glasses but i STILL see horrible starbursts around streetlights and any form of bright ass led light. it’s so annoying! i asked the optometrist about it and she said these lights are still quite normal but maybe i didn’t specify they were specifically starburst. my eyes are healthy from the eye exam. my glasses were also meant to correct my astig, but it really isn’t doing anything for lights. it’s not painful, just annoying and i don’t know what i can do to stop these annoying starbursts especially with streetlights and headlights or on stages. traffic lights and stuff are okay in the morning but have noticeable streaks at night. those car headlights however are a lil more noticeable even during the day and are worse at night
Should I fill this prescription? I have the samples on now and do like them. Contacts were not pushed by the doctor I just wanted to try them because I drive a lot but feel funny getting such a low contact prescription.
My 4 year old has been complaining of eye pain for a week now so we went to see a pediatrician and she said it might be irritation because she didn’t see anything in her exam. Couple days later her pain became more constant. Found a pediatric ophthalmologist and took her in. Regarding her eye pain the dr said it’s most likely allergies or Pain associated with headaches or sinus congestion (which she doesn’t have neither) but that her optic nerves (which were the main concern) we perfectly fine. She said she appeared to have difficulty with her eyesight so she dilated her eyes and did another exam. She said she has astigmatism and wants her to wear glasses for at least a year with the hope it’ll correct itself. I have astigmatism myself and I’m also nearsighted and have been wearing glasses since I was 9 ish (I’m 30.) Should I get a second opinion. I feel like the exam was less than a few minutes and she came to that conclusion so quickly. Or did she actually notice it right away because it’s that obvious. I’m at a loss. Glasses are not the worse thing, I’m mostly thankful her pain was nothing severe, but I don’t want her wearing them if it’s not necessary. I guess I’m just wondering if anyone here has had a similar experience with their kids. She’s so small that she can’t fully explain what she feels or how she sees since it’s not really reliable.
I have an astigmatism, and I asked on a different subreddit but am curious as to what people say here. Is anyone able to focus their eyes to enhance their eyesight? It looks really odd when I do it, like I’m crossing my left eye only. I’m only able to do it without contacts and glasses, and my prescription is -4.5 for left and right-4.0 for right. I’m typing this right now with no contacts or glasses on my phone and I can see okay if I focus in my eyes on the correct distance. Curious as to why or how i do this, never thought about it until people started acting like it was very unusual
