For when the designers know exactly what they're doing... but they don't care because they're assholes.

This is a subreddit for designs specifically crafted to make the experience worse for the user. This can be due to greed, apathy, laziness or just downright scumbaggery.

Check out /r/Clickshaming and /r/AntiAssholeDesign as well!

Rules

1. Must Abide by Hanlon's Razor.

"Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity."

Usually, bad things happen not because of bad intentions, but because of bad planning. Asshole designs are specifically engineered to exploit the user for profit. Try to think what the designer would gain from deceiving the user, and if it's likely to be an oversight on their part rather than an intentional design. For common topics that fall under this rule, check our wiki.

https://reddit.com/r/assholedesign/wiki/hanlonsrazor

2. No, It's Not Literal.

"Haha, so it's like an actual asshole in r/AssholeDesign, right?" STOP! Don't post dicks or butts to this sub. You're not being clever. The joke is dead. This rule is strictly enforced, and breaking it will lead to an immediate 7-day ban.

3. Don't be Subtle.

Please make it obvious what you’re trying to highlight. A clear and concise post title can go a long way.

If this is the reason why your post was removed, we don't know what we're supposed to be seeing.

4. Common topics.

To keep the subreddit's content fresh, we remove common topics and designs that have recently been posted by other users. For a list of retired topics that fall under this rule, check our wiki.

https://reddit.com/r/assholedesign/wiki/common_topics

5. Posts must display aspects of design.

If your post doesn't talk about the way something is designed, don't post it here.

6. No low effort content.

Please put some thought into your post and how you present the "asshole design" in it. Also, make sure your title is relevant to the post and descriptive of the design. Make it easy to read, don't make it overly lengthy.

Guidelines

1. We're not limited to programming.

Asshole design goes beyond the computer screen. Some of our best posts have been from non-technical stuff.

2. You can post positive things, too!

Informational videos demonstrating malicious techniques, resources for combating assholedesign, etc. are all completely acceptable.

3. Satire and Lampshade Hanging is acceptable if tagged appropriately.

Satire is ridicule of asshole design techniques, and should be tagged under the "Satire" flair. Lampshade Hanging is subversion of asshole design techniques and should be tagged under "Lampshading".

4. Bots & novelty accounts are subject to arbitrary bans.

Some users have issued concerns regarding certain bots and their use as a constructive part of Reddit. Some bots might be banned, others may be allowed to stay. This rule will be enforced on a case-by case basis.

Meta Ads saying that an ad is trying to circumvent the review process with 0 explanation as to why they approved the ad in the first place. Every time I run ads with Meta I question how this company is even profitable... They make it so hard to give them money.

dundle.com taking payment with a nonrefundable payment method before enforcing a mandatory KYC to receive the product ordered...

Companies claim they spread out or randomize KYC in order to minimise inconvenience to customers but this has to be the worst example of a KYC framework I have ever seen.

They accept Phone Bill as a payment method, however instead of requesting documents before allowing the payment to be made (which is non refundable directly), they instead rely on a fruitful bunch of customers who will likely be unable to complete or pass their checks and pocket the funds without issuing any reimbursement.

The cherry on top is that they have a virtually non existent support system, Live Chat is never avaliable and the only other method is email which takes sometimes a week to receive a reply - including waiting for your documents to be checked and approved.

DashPass Cancelation Dark Pattern

Why would you have stay with dash pass in the big red letter right under the description of why you're canceling? Thought I had cancelled weeks ago until I got the email saying I was about to get charged. Saw this and realized what happened... I know I should have paid more attention, but this is clearly to trick people.

Found this on a retail website when I was buying a necklace for for my goddaughter’s first communion

It was checked by default at checkout (on the final checkout submission page nonetheless)

They charge a fee for not pre-paying at least 10 dollars.

I only have enough money to do one load of laundry, so they charge me an extra .25

Also it costs 2.75 per load, if I didn't have 2 dollars already pre paid it would cost me an extra .50 cents to pay for one load.

Premium 2Accounts shows fake Whatsapp notifications.

I don't have Whatsapp installed on my phone. I don't even have an account. But if I let 2Accounts show notifications, I get these all the time and if I don't, I don't get notifications from my alternate Discord account that I set up in 2Accounts. I have the premium version of 2Accounts so it's not some ploy to get me to subscribe.

Literally impossible to opt out of all emails from Nextdoor. Even if you manually untick all the categories, they invent new ones a week later and spam your inbox through new categories.

When you buy a Lenovo laptop, they install McAfee software and have auto renew turned on without telling the customer. This invoice looks like it's mandatory to pay

Got junk email for more concerts. Clicking unsubscribe takes me to their upcoming concerts page instead of unsubscribing

I went to a concert there once, so this isn’t some random company. It doesn’t say anywhere on that site it links to that I’ve successfully unsubscribed.

I have ordered groceries weekly since 2021 with Walmart’s app— my “savings” have dramatically increased in the last 3 months

Ordering groceries weekly would cost me around $160-200 and the app used to display a depressingly accurate “You saved .36¢ on today’s order!” on a weekly basis. I’m assuming goosing the numbers is a psychological ploy, and it’s been broken up until 3 months ago.

We recently switched from Visio 2013 to the browser based Office 365 version. You already have to pay extra for a Visio license, but I have to upgrade THAT license further to use 'Grid and Snap' features....in a drawing and process diagram tool.
