For the next couple months while y’all are visiting New Orleans please please tip your service industry & transportation staff. January was a hard month for us and we rely on your business to live. Thank you !
Hi all! I’m looking for some recommendations for viet-creole or Vietnamese food unique to NOLA. For context I’m Vietnamese from Southern California, so I’m not looking for authentic restaurants since that’s plentiful back home. I also have a car for the weekend, so I can venture a little. Thanks!!
Hello! Does anyone know of any dance gigs or jobs floating around either Metairie area or downtown? I’m getting desperate when it comes to not being able to find work and would REALLY love to not have to resort to other means for income.
If not, that’s oki! Thank you for trying <3
Hi! I'm planning a bachelorette for April/May time and seeing if anyone has hotel recs? Looking for some place with a good vibe!
I’m visiting NOLA for the first time and second day in me and my husband got hit with the craziest stomach illness. Does anyone know if it’s norovirus going around?
Hi all, I’ll be at the game next weekend, and I have a flight out at 2 AM that night. Assuming I get out of the stadium at around 9:30-10, I’m hoping to have enough time. Was wondering what your suggestion would be for transportation. Is it even worth trying to get an uber/lyft from the stadium? Should I try to walk somewhere for better availability? And other suggestions? Thanks!
I know it starts at 7pm and it’s 90 floats. Would anyone be able to give a rough estimate of how long it takes the first few floats to reach the end of the route? Planning to go with a group of friends tonight who don’t get off of work till 7:45, just wondering how much of the parade we’d be able to catch if we meet up at the end of the route after they get off.
Hola NOLA!
Hubby and I are coming to celebrate our 39th anniversary soon. It's a bucket list trip for us.
We each have a bit of a wedding ring "wardrobe", matching rings that signify things or events that are important to us.
We'd love to come home from our trip with new rings that reflect the spooky side of New Orleans. We're not looking high end, but reasonable quality would be nice, a few hundred each would be doable.
Any thoughts on shops to hit up?
Wondering if someone can point me in the right direction for info on the box and street parking for Mardi Gras? I moved here a couple months ago and while not new to New Orleans, this will be my first Mardi Gras as a resident. I live in the Quarter (Rampart and Saint Philip area) and would like to find out more about the box and parking restrictions for Mardi Gras. I did some googling, but was only finding advertisements for parking and package deals aimed at tourists. Thanks!
Hi! I just wanted to ask people who have actually been there if it’s really as good as everyone says on here. We’ve been to 2 different ones and we just walked out because it was not good. Looking for a good artist who isn’t rude 💀thank you!!
In New Orleans this week and wanting to see some murals around the city. Typically I enjoy photographing art pieces in public spaces from various cities so any suggestions are welcomed. This is my fifth trip here so I’ve gotten to see the museums and a few galleries, but wondering what are some of the murals in the community you’d say are worth seeking out? Or spaces you’d recommend to see some art.
My boyfriend and I are going to be in town for Valentine’s Day and it’s my first time! I have family in the area but they don’t really do romantic scenery there. Do you guys have any recommendations for a nice and romantic dinner? I’ve seen a few, like Annunciation or Muriel’s. I just don’t want to get sucked into a tourist trap that isn’t worth the money. Any help is appreciated! Thank you!
Hi all, I've been to New Orleans twice, both times during Mardi Gras, and had the time of my life. I've been to 20+ countries and I still tell people New Orleans is my favorite city in the world. So here's the situation: I have a trip booked to come for the weekend before the big weekend leading into Fat Tuesday. I just started a new job that pays a lot more, and even though they already gave me the days off since I had this trip booked before I started the new job, I'm struggling with the decision to go through with it. The new years incident spooked me a bit + with this job paying more money, I'm losing a lot more with each day that I take off. My big question is, how different are the vibes in the French Quarter during Mardi Gras season vs the summer? I'm just scared about visiting outside of Mardi Gras and realizing that I don't really love New Orleans that much, I just love Mardi Gras season. Will I be severely disappointed if I choose to come in the summer instead? Would appreciate any input has this decision has been eating me up all week...thanks!
Update: Thank you for all of the helpful responses! It appears that summer is not the move and with me being a school teacher, I'd have to take off to come in either the spring or the fall so it looks like I'm just going to go through with the trip I have planned. Thanks again, you guys rock!
Going to be in New Orleans for my first time with my wife and another couple. Looking for lunch and dinner recommendations. We love seafood and oysters. Already made a reservation for February 19 at Peche.
I really enjoyed Krewe of Femme Fatale, Carrollton, King Arthur & the mystic krewe of music last year. I would like to see it again but I can't get that week off😪
Say I cut a slice and the top of the babies head was in my slice but the baby actually stayed in the cake(not decaptitated). So we can now totally see the baby and what piece it is in. Am I on the hook for the next round? Is it a total dick move to avoid the baby and make that the absolute last piece?
Where is the best place for a big man to get a white suit?
My buddy just called and said he won a pair of Super Bowl tickets so we’re coming to the game! We’re driving in from Nashville the night before and plan to drive to the game. I’m looking at parking passes on Stubhub but I have no idea of where to go. Are there any lots-garages that you’d recommend and or ones to avoid?
Just looking for some opinions!
I've never been to NOLA but really would like to do it this year.
Is Jazz Fest the right time to do it? There are a handful of artists I wouldn't mind seeing, but no one I absolutely have to see.
My interests:
History Food (coffee shops, restaurants) Architecture, Parks Music
I could only afford to do a few nights, so staying the full week between jazz fest weekends to soak in the city is not an option. Will attending jazz fest make me lose too much time to explore?
[TLDR: In the process of a possibly getting a job in NOLA, wondering if there are any "first responder" neighborhoods like those that pop up in bigger midwest cities (milwaukee, Chicago, etc), What the car/motorcycles scene is like (if any) and what some firemen (if any are on the sub) do for second jobs.]
Hello! I'm currently trying to get a civil service job here in NOLA (I have been here before and on past trips, I have found to enjoy the city, between the weather always being warm, the way the city is alive, the community, the food). and have a few questions regarding some things that I as a possible transplant wouldn't quite know yet.
First things first. I'm a big car/motorcycle guy. what's the scene like out here? Are there meets? events? etc. I've looked around on Facebook and seen that Baton Rouge occasionally has cars and coffee, mor wondering on the "underground" side of things. I'm coming from milwaukee and we have a weekly meeting spot and then go do some spirited driving afterwards. anything like that here?
Second. What are decent neighborhoods. I'm not afraid to pick up a second job like most public servants, but also want to try to avoid burnout so not completely sure on what my price point is looking at. rough estimate is no more than 1300 a month.
Third for any FF or EMTs/Medics in NOLA, what do second jobs look like out here? any that NOLA servicemen trend twords? anybody work bith Fire and EMS? is that sort of thing even allowed (ik the schedules might overlap).
Any help is appreciated! thank you guys.
Wow, what an amazing sub! This is so cool.
I'm looking for a place for 11 people for a fancy lunch in March. My wife and I are celebrating 40 years married with all our kids and for 4 grandkids. We thought about Commander's Palace, but they are booked. And the last time we were there it wasn't really great! What's a great alternative?
We'd like something that has great food and has the atmosphere which has folks dressing up.
Firstly, love the group - Scottish immigrant based in Dallas here, I've been visiting NOLA for years and haven't found anywhere else in America that makes me feel so happy, grounded and excited - so we decided to bite the bullet and leave the drab suburban strip malls of Texas and move to NOLA.
I'd love some local advice on where would be a good place to stay. Some info on us: two DINKs in our forties, two small rescue dogs - foodies, I'm a musician, love to eat, drink, walk a lot, experience culture, volunteer with those less fortunate, love socializing and being around people. Both remote workers, so won't be commuting in town.
At the moment our shortlist is Treme (we always stay there when we travel and have made friends and local connections there), Marigny, Bywater - and further west, we love Touro, Uptown, Milan, LGD.
Coming from Dallas we definitely want more of a "buzz" - lots of bars, restaurants and amenities walkable, but enough peace and quiet not to have someone singing or vomiting outside our window at 3am. Also we'd like a yard for the pups, and while being French Quarter adjacent seems great, I'm wondering whether we'll get more space near Magazine St, the properties out there seem more spacious.
Budget for house is circa $600k. Don't want to have to drive much, we have enough of that in Texas! We want to live like locals, contribute to the local culture and get engrained in the local community - and we're super excited about it all.
Welcome all of your thoughts and ideas!
First, thanks to everyone in the sub for creating a wealth of knowledge. Y'all are awesome.
My wife and I will be among the tourists coming for our first visit to the city and Mardi Gras this year (sorry), and, along with getting to see a bunch of krewes from reserved places, we also have reservations at quite a few restaurants (Commander's for bunch, GW Fins, Dooky...) that require a jacket/blazer or something similar.
I'm from Charleston, so this is a norm for me, but we have a very specific look here. I would much rather blend in than stand out. Is there a blazer, jeans, linen, khaki, Brooks Brother, J. Press... standard someone would please advise me on? I've been looking at pictures of these places, but damn if there aren't people in everything from white tuxes to nice suits to jeans and a standard Oxford. My goal is to leave the hotel for a walking tour, krewe, cooking class, whatever, and then be able to walk into a restaurant and look like I am dressed for that meal.
I am from New Orleans but my fiance and 90% of our guests are not. I want to provide them with a memorable and fun second line experience as everyone is asking about it and it will be most of their first times. I'm going back and forth between whether it should be after the ceremony or after the reception.
After the ceremony:
-daylight
-through the French Quarter
-pretty sober participants
After the reception:
-9:30/10pm at night
-through Lower Garden District
-people will have had a lot to drink
I think there are pros and cons to each. Worried that people will be too sober for a daytime second line coming out of church but worried people will be too drunk for a post-reception second line and won't want to walk much after dancing at the cocktail-style reception for hours. When I ask some of our guests what they'd prefer they are torn. Wondering if any of you have a preference.
Note: the new orleans weddings I have attended have all done an evening second line, but most of those guests were New Orleans guests.
Edit: wedding is in March
I know there are a bunch of posts like this with great suggestions, but I couldn't find anything that quite fit my question. Basically, I have seen a bunch of suggestions for folks who are most likely younger, more tech savvy, and more flexible with just ending up somewhere random and having a good time. My parents are in their late 70s, very reasonably mobile but also very, um, boomer-ish. (My dad still prints out MapQuest, they sometimes get overwhelmed with a lot of chaos if they're in an unfamiliar place, not super used to - but willing to try! - using public transportation, etc).
My parents are die-hard Chiefs fans and plan to make the trip to NOLA to enjoy the SB experience, but they definitely don't plan to go to the game. I was hoping someone might know of any cool places or watch parties that will be showing the game for free or cheapish.
My parents went to Las Vegas last year for the same thing - hanging out to experience the Super Bowl/Chiefs vibe, but they're way more familiar/comfortable with Las Vegas, plus I was able to glean reddit and find them a really cool free outdoor watch party and activities/transportation that they enjoyed and were able to manage quite well. I'm hoping there are offerings in NOLA that are similar that I just haven't come across yet.
My parents aren't opposed to spending money, they just don't want to pay $300+ each to attend a branded watch party with a bunch of things/celebs they won't be interested in, plus my mom doesn't drink, and my dad isn't a crazy drinker either, so they don't really need the all-you-can-drink type offerings.
I think my dad has been investigating other things they might do while they're down there (they'll be there from 2/5 - 2/11), but I feel like he'll be able to figure out cool touristy things to do during the week. I just really want them to be able to view the Super Bowl with other fans in a fun atmosphere that doesn't involve shoulder-to-shoulder madness in a bar where they can't access a restroom or sit down. It might be that there isn't really anything like that in NOLA so they might just end up having to watch it in their Airbnb, and that's ok.
I saw that Guy Fieri's Flavortown Tailgate is free? - that might be their best bet? It sounds really charming, but I also just watched 80 for Brady a couple of weeks ago haha.
TLDR: Anyone know of any free-ish Super Bowl tailgate/watch parties that are suitable for some Boomer Chiefs fans from the Midwest?
Thanks everyone, and sorry this is so long.
We just scheduled a quick trip to NOLA 3/13-16 and see there will be a St Paddy’s Day Parade on the 15th. We try to visit at least once a year but usually do late spring or fall so have never made a parade day before, super excited!! Neve venture far from the quarter and Frenchmen so not super familiar with the area.
Any suggestions for best location to watch the parade?
Hey y’all, I’m visiting New Orleans from Feb 22-26 for the second time, and while I absolutely love the city, I had a tough time last visit finding solid vegetarian (not vegan) options—no meat, no eggs.
I know NOLA is a paradise for seafood and meat lovers, but I can’t change my diet, so I’m hoping some locals or fellow vegetarians can help me out with recommendations! Are there any must-try spots that serve great vegetarian dishes or places with solid veg-friendly options?
Would love to hear your suggestions! Thanks in advance! 🙌
So I have way too much art to hang up and nothing to put it in, any places (preferably near uptown) that have an abundance of cheap frames? Is there anyone selling cheap frames that I can buy off of them?
We are looking to host a sunday brunch in the French quarter area for about 35 people. We’re not looking for anything fancy, just some food (breakfast sandwiches or beignets) and coffee. I’ve emailed a few restaurants around the area and am getting quotes that are quite high - around 3-5k, and more formal than we’d like. We’re hoping to spend max 2k, even less if possible. I’d love an outdoor space but we are very flexible.
Does anyone know of any good options for what we’re looking for?
Hi! We’re currently staying in the French Quarter, and I’m looking for a barber/saloon for men that can deal with longer hair. Not so long, not even shoulder length, but it needs scissors treatment. Thank you for your answers! Have a great day!
