Was there always no indication of multiple photos in a post or is that a bug with the side loaded version?

Or rather the only indication is the little “3” or whatever when you’re in your feed. But once you tap to open the media viewer, there’s no indication that you can swipe to view more. Meaning if you miss that little number indicator before tapping the post, multiple images display exactly the same as single image posts.

This seems like a pretty glaring UX oversight but I can’t remember if it was always like this. Unless I have some setting turned off that might solve this but I didn’t see anything.

Former Apollo user here - I built something to help fill the void (and my mental health)

Hey Apollo community 👋 Like many of you, losing Apollo hit me hard. Christian's dedication to crafting the perfect Reddit app really inspired me - especially since I'd been coding for years but never built anything of my own.

After Apollo shut down, I found myself back on the Reddit website feeling... overwhelmed. The constant flood of political posts (especially with election season ramping up) was really affecting my mental health. I missed the control Apollo gave us over our Reddit experience.

So I thought "what would Christian do?" and decided to build something to help. I learned Swift from scratch (after 7 years of backend dev work) and created Protego for Reddit - a tiny but powerful Safari extension that lets you filter out posts you don't want to see.

Think of it as a shield charm for your mental health 🪄

Protego for Reddit

Download link on the App Store

It's not trying to be Apollo (nothing could be), but it does one thing well: it lets you browse Reddit without the anxiety. You can filter out keywords (with wildcard support), hide the annoying "Open in App" banner, and sync your settings across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Protego for Reddit is a Safari extension for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro

I'm still learning and adding features, but I wanted to share it with the community that inspired me to start building in the first place. Currently running a small Black Friday discount if anyone wants to try it out.

Christian, if you're reading this - thank you for showing us that one developer really can make a difference. I learned so much just by watching how you engaged with the community and built Apollo with such care.

Would love to hear what minor features you all miss most from Apollo. I've already got a few on my roadmap based on comments from other Apollo refugees!

Which Apollo extensions do I really need?

Went through the process of converting my sideloaded Apollo to use sidestore (as opposed to sideloadly) today in hopes of not needing to be tethered to my computer once a week for refreshes anymore.

So far, so good! Apollo works. But when I went to install it, it asked if I wanted to install the extensions and I (possibly stupidly) said yes.

Turns out it put on SIX extensions, for a total of nine App IDs (counting Apollo itself and the two that SideStore itself used).

This means I don't have any App IDs left to install anything else (I'd hoped to get an improved YouTube thing). Bummer.

Is there any way to remove these? I realize I have to just wait for the AppIDs to expire, but I don't want them to refresh, how can I get rid of them from inside the Apollo app so they won't refresh?

Also, is there a description of these extensions anywhere? For the record, the ones it put on are:

  • Apollo ApolloIntentions
  • Apollo Apollofari
  • Apollo AthenaWidget
  • Apollo NotificationContentExtension
  • Apollo NotificationServiceExtension
  • Apollo Open in Apollo (pretty sure I don't use this one, I don't use Safari)

Do I need to uninstall Apollo and then reinstall it, being picky about the extensions next time? Or?

Any advice appreciated.

ETA: When fussing with looking at my installed apps, I (again possibly stupidly) clicked "Refresh All." The two apps I had were of course SideStore itself, and Apollo. It had to refresh itself, so the SideStore aborted, reinstalled (I saw the little pie wipe animation). Apollo still works fine, but now... I can't open SideStore at all, it just crashes immediately when trying to launch. Have I screwed stuff up? Is there any way to fix without uninstalling/resinstalling SideStore? It was rather a pain in the ass to install, so hoping to not need that. But wondering if my Apollo won't refresh in a week, now, unless I deal with the SideStore crashing problem.

Again, any advice appreciated (I posted over in the SideStore sub too, about the last bit).

sideloadly no longer working (iOS 18.1 / OSX 15.1.1)

After updating both iOS and OSX, I get an error trying to load Apollo_1.15.11_ApolloPatcher_0.0.9.ipa. Sideloadly recommends reinstalling sideloadly:

https://postimg.cc/jWbRsM84

Since my last install, I have moved away from Chrome to Firefox. Upon redownloading the sideloadly dmg, Firefox warns me it contains a virus.

Anyone run into this?

So, I have been using apollo for a long time, it was working on my 14, running iOS 17. But, since updating my device to iOS18, as soon as I enable dev options and install apollo via sideloadly, my device begins to heat up like anything and battery drain is also high. Anyone with similar issue?

This is happening for both Apollo tweak by Blackburn and X by BandarHL.

I only side load these two.

Previously, I thought this was an issue with my device or software. But, I just removed these two apps and turned off the dev options under privacy, and my device is running fine with no unusual battery drain.

How to download gifs and videos?

Back in the day the download button worked. Then a Reddit downloader Siri shortcut worked until it stopped and then there was a cobalt download shortcut which has stopped working.

Is there a current shortcut to be able to download media or share to other apps?

Currently I have to copy the url, open safari, cobalt tools website, paste url, open download folder and search for it.

Is there an easier way?

Thanks

Sideloadly needs my PC to be connected to wi-fi constantly... anything that doesn't?

Sideloadly keeps failing on my phone because I forget to connect my PC to wi-fi every few days, so is there a way I can keep it installed without wi-fi?

Nice Apollo Alternative

We all miss Apollo But if you don’t want to use the Reddit app, then check out Acorn (check their subreddit for installation (iOS only)). This is an advice, not an ad.

The project is in beta, but the developer is very active, adding features every week

Another reason to dislike the stock Reddit app: you can’t select text. Apollo never had this issue.

The only reason I was using the Reddit app and not Apollo is because you can’t combine text and images on Apollo since that was a feature added later on Reddit.

But going back to that app always reminds me of why I hate the stock app and why I love using Apollo.

Can you sideload Apollo without installing a Mobile Device Management (MDM) profile?

The method I used to sideload Apollo was via appdb.to but the problem was that I had to install their MDM profile to do so and I just started a new job that requires their own Mobile Device Management profile if I want to use my phone for anything work related.

My understanding is that any device can only have one MDM profile installed at a time, so I basically have to choose between my favorite iOS of all time or being able to do things like manage my email, schedule and chat from my phone, which is an awful choice to have to make.

Is there a way to sideload Apollo without installing a mobile device management profile so I can have my cake and eat it too?

On MacOS and iOS 18.1, can anyone get jitterbugpair to exec?

Fuck I miss Apollo…

In light of all the politics posts and the inability to filter them out, it’s really making it apparent how bad reddit is. This might be my push to try sideloading….

Keep your politics to yourself America FFS!

I miss Apollo

Reddit’s app is a confusing mess of ads and navigation that leaves me in the wrong sub or post.

Reddit should pay the developer to bring it back and make it inline with their business requirements without any API fees. Just make it require a premium subscription or something.

Issues with new iPad Mini (a17) and 18.1

I updated my iPad this afternoon to 18.1 and now side loaded Apollo doesn’t work. I’ve tried to update it, delete it, etc etc and nothing seems to work. Put in my Reddit api key but when I try to log in the button doesn’t work. Works fine on my m1 air on beta 18.1 so just seeing if anyone else has the same issue or other things for me to try. I’m using sideloadley and 1.15.11

Thanks

Is There Any IOS App That Is Similar To The Relay App?

I have been searching the app store for something that I can use on my IPad Pro 12.9. But I can't find anything that is similar to Apollo or Relay at all. What App is everyone else using for their IPhone and IPad? I really miss The Apollo App. Now I'm only using The Official Reddit App for my IPad Pro 12.9.
