Pet Food Donations?

I have a freezer full of dog food that my dog decides he hates and I forgot to turn off the autoship. Does anyone recommend a place I could contact and see if they take donations locally? Thanks in advance!

Apex utility petition had started

This came across my feed and wanted to bring it here. Curious if others are still having issues. I'm not sure if this will have any legs or what's the ongoing issue people seem to be having.

Senate Bill 382 also strips away local zoning authority

🚨⚠️Bad Bill Alert! ⚠️🚨

Senate Bill 382 has been getting a lot of press lately as a post election partisan power grab. But did you know that tucked in this bill is ALSO a provision that seemingly strips away local zoning authority?

The NCGA is shifting a bunch of powers from the Governor and Attorney General (offices Democrats just won) to themselves and the State Auditors Office (controlled by Republicans). It's clearly unconstitutional, and that fight is on going. But that part of the bill is not what I'm here to talk about. Instead, more in my lane, I want to draw attention to the zoning law changes that seems to have far reaching ramifications. My read is it prevents common sense zoning measures every municipality undertakes (such as not allowing tobacco or vap shops near schools). It's complicated, but let me explain.

First, the straight forward part. Tucked in at the end of the bill is a zoning provision which does two things:

  1. It prevents towns from "down zoning" a property without the owners consent. Generally speaking, a down zoning is when a property right of some type is removed

  2. It expands the definition of down zoning

Now, I actually don't have much of a problem with #1 - at least under the old definition of down zoning. Apex, and most towns, I think generally don't initiate rezonings on our own for anything other than our own property.

This, on it's own, would likely outlaw any further "neighborhood overlay districts" commonly used by NIMBYs to restrict housing. I can live with that.

The problem is with the second part. This expansion of what it means to be a down zoning, COMBINED with the prevention of towns from being able to do it without permission, potentially means that most common sense zoning and development rules can no longer be done! The simple reason is, because the definition is so broad (it talks about "creating non-conformity" or "reducing uses") even simple things like deciding to prevent tobacco stores from opening next to a school are no longer allowed.

The issue is, MOST ordinances in some way shape or form prevent or restrict the uses of stuff. That's why they are laws. They are restrictive. That's just what laws do. This says we can't do (most) laws anymore.

So, in some sense, it does really seem like S382 prevents towns from further restricting the commercial use of land, ever again. Whatever the land use rights are today, whatever uses are allowed, whatever provisions of signs or literally any other development rule is in place, are now the absolute bottom baseline and can never be further restricted, only expanded.

If that sounds good to you, and maybe it does, please again keep in mind the tobacco shop example. MOST land use ordinances municipalities make are in the ballpark of regulating where questionable uses go and can't go.

It seems like we can't do that anymore.

Thanks for the support with our free teen mental health support (partnered with NCDHHS!!)

I just wanted to pop back in and say thank you for all the love on my last post about Somethings. It’s honestly amazing to see how much this community cares about teen mental health—especially with everything folks are going through after Hurricane Helene.

I got a ton of DMs with questions (y’all are awesome), so I thought I’d share a quick FAQ in case anyone else is wondering the same things:

  1. What’s a peer specialist, exactly? Think of them as a relatable older sibling who really gets it. They’re young adults trained to support teens with empathy and guidance—no judgment, just someone who listens and cares.
  2. Wait, this is free? How?? Yep, totally free! We’re partnered with the state and NCDHHS to make this happen. It’s all about making sure every teen has access to help when they need it most.

If this sounds like something that could help your teen (or someone you know), shoot me a DM or check out our website to sign up.

And for anyone who’s been through tough times, what other mental health resources or tips have you found helpful? I’d love to hear about them and keep the conversation going.

Thanks again for being such an incredible community 💙

Curious if Apex qualifies for the "Save Up To $9,000 with Duke Energy PowerPair Rebate" of has similar plan

I understand while some residents and many commercial areas are served by Duke Energy, most residents in Apex are instead provided electric service by the town. Does the town has similar rebate for residents that want to install household battery system?

Free mental health support for all teens in NC after Hurricane Helene <3 (sponsored by NCDHHS!)

I’m a student ambassador for Somethings - a state-endorsed, free mental health service for teens exclusively in North Carolina. We connect teens with trained young adult peer specialists who can provide guidance, empathy, and support during tough times.

I'm trying to as many parents and teens who might benefit from additional support as possible especially those navigating challenges like anxiety, depression, etc. Here's where we're mentioned on the NCDHHS site (check the second slide of the carousel), and additionally here's our website outlining our partnerships with the state: www.somethings.com/northcarolina

Please feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

Hunting + Fishing

What’s up, y’all! My name’s Trey, 37/M, and I’m new to the area (Holly Springs). I’m looking to meet some fellow outdoor enthusiasts—hunting, fishing, camping, and all that good stuff.

If you know of any must-visit spots around here or have a group that gets together for outdoor activities, I’d love to connect. I’ve heard Jordan Lake is nice (though pretty popular), and I know there’s some public game land near Harris too- that said, I haven’t come across any hunting clubs or lodges around here that seem worth a damn.

Any advice, recommendations, tips, or just general message board bs is appreciated.

Looking forward to meeting y'all and maybe teaming up for a hunt, fishing trip, or a weekend in the woods. ✌️

Does anybody have footage of the 2019 apex middle school 8th grade graduation?

Reason I ask this, well honestly I just want to go down memory lane and see how my years have gone by, just curious because I found a recording of my elementary graduation and high school but I can’t find any of my middle school graduation at all unfortunately so if anybody has anything I would appreciate it, thanks.

Best/Worst Apartments?

Looking for an apartment since my bf will soon be working in downtown Raleigh. Mainly searching for a 2 bed / 2 bath under $1600.

What apartments have you had experiences—good and/or bad—with? Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated! 🙂

Peakway Closure/Construction

Yes, the Peakway is finally closed at Salem, and active construction work is actually happening.

How long?

According to the contract, Wooten has 3 years to complete and deliver the Peakway bridge. But this is the padded construction time with contingencies added: they (might) start paying penalties at this point. A better middle of the road optimistic estimate might be 2.5 years, or less. But, by contract, it's 3 years.

What about White Hall Manor?

During the first few days of the closure, I saw many drivers (and I went out there to observe myself) drive to the closure point, look confused, and take a right hand turn and start navigating their way twisting through White Hall Manor.

Please don't do that.

The official detour route, which is much faster, goes around to 55. If you're heading to New Hill, consider going over to Kelly Road. At this point we've implemented multiple mitigations to soften the impact on this community, including speed bumps, increased police patrols, signage, etc. We'll continue to monitor the situation and respond as needed.

I expect the situation will improve as drivers adjust to the closure.

Remind me who is paying for this?

This was funded approximately 50% by grants and 50% by the Town of Apex (most notably the recent bond). The actual cost to tax payers net grants is probably around $15m, which is much, much less than some estimates I saw when we bid it.

What about a light at Peakway & Tingen?

It's coming, and my understanding is it should be operational roughly when this project completes if not sooner (but to be clear: it is a separate project)

What about Tingen and S. Salem?

That light will be removed and the Tingen crossing closed when this project is completed, at the requirement of CSX.

Apex Market hides prices on snacks

The Apex Market convenience store/gas station by Publix and Culvers does not show prices on many snack items inside the store. Above each item there is a bar code but no price. This feels shady and anti-consumer. Is there anything illegal about this? Can the town government talk to the owner?

Police report for curiosity sake

There were just 15 police cars on my street and the street next to me. I’m pretty sure who they were there for as the entire neighborhood has had issues with them in the past, but nothing has happened like this before.

For curiosity and safety reasons I’d like to know why they were responding.

Like I said this just happened so I doubt I’ll be able to find anything out just yet but I’m curious what my options are.

It's been a difficult week for many!

It's been a pretty tough week for many post election (to put it mildly). I run a small Buddhist Sangha and I don't know how I would be dealing with what is going on right now if I didn't have my practice to fall back on. We have had a lot of people reaching out over the past week looking for support or looking to learn about Buddhism for the first time - so I wanted to make sure to get the word out about our meetings in case anyone here is interested. We started out as an online Sangha but we now have in-person meetings in Apex. Our next meeting is this coming Monday (11/18) @ 7PM. Please feel free to come out whether it is your first time learning about Buddhism or whether you are a long time practitioner looking for a group to meet with. Our group is very casual, purposefully non-sectarian and welcomes newcomers. More info can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1047849323204893/ Feel free to comment or message me with any questions.

School board meeting

It was so refreshing to hear wonderful speakers at the school board meeting against the reassignment being done for our and other communities. I hope school board takes the advice and reconsider the reassignment for our community. Interesting thing I learnt is our representative is unscathed by any reassignment even though their community is closer to new school. Wonder when will representatives raise voices for the people they represent. Kudos to the lady who addressed reddit comments 👏

Missing TV channels?

Anyone else having trouble getting channels 11 & 17 - ABC & NBC? Started about a month back but now it’s not showing up anymore for some reason. We’ve run the channels but the TV can’t find them anywhere - curious to see if it’s an us problem or if others are running into this! TIA!!

Parking Issues

For a non-private residency/neighborhood, I have two questions.

  1. Can HOAs in Apex (for non-private neighborhoods) enforce parking restrictions for unmarked roads? Does this mean they can tow it? Can this mean they are allowed to fine you for it?
  2. Does Apex as a town itself on public roads allow street parking outside of prohibited zones ?

I'm having trouble with a specific HOA and want to know if they can violate the law via contract also... if you sign a contract saying that you agree to it... does that really mean thats possible if they technically don't have the ability to govern over something?

**ATTN *All Families Impacted by Any WCPSS Reassignment*

The FINAL school board meeting regarding the ‘25-’26 reassignment is coming up quickly - Tuesday, November 12th at 5pm. We need EVERYONE to come out to show the board we are not supportive of this reassignment proposal, nor of the way that they have handled these proposals in the past.

Whether you have kids who attend school now, next year, or anytime in the future, this affects YOU. Even if you don't have kids, removing your neighborhood from the closest/local school will have a negative impact on your home's value. Studies have proven that fact. We need you too!

We have been tirelessly working for months now, trying to get the board to listen to our concerns, present them with the facts, and they've done all but ignore everything we've given them.

WE NEED YOUR HELP. We need as many people as possible. Gather your friends and neighbors - we need you!

Please, please, please - get involved! Demand your voice be heard. Speak at the meeting or just stand in solidarity with our communities to demand change. This is our final effort to get the board to listen to us. Nothing else has worked.

This fight is not going to stop this year, as they have said they have plans for making more changes in the future. We need to show them that *enough is enough*.

Please sign up for Nov. 12 protest 5:00pm at 5625 Dillard Drive in Cary. The more people the better! If you sign up, show up! This matters for the kids, the community and the stability for thousands of families.

Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Thanks and we hope to see you there
