Is there any use for old Android tablets running Android 4 or 5?

I have a Kindle Fire HDX and an Verizon LG G-Pad 7ā€ that run (Amazon skinned) Android 4 and Android 5 respectively.

Both tablets have been out of circulation for over a decade and run unsupported OS versions that havenā€™t seen active development in the same time. I can still install and run some apps, but they are slow af due to the legacy hardware, and many of my mobile games are unsupported now.

The tablets are in good condition and I would hate to discard them, so I was wondering if thereā€™s anything I can do with them project wise thatā€™s supported in 2024/2025. If not, Iā€™m happy to recycle the tablets.

Newby trying to find an easy project

Hey everyone,

I have three old Android phones lying around (Motorola e5 play, Redmi 5+ and a vivo y30) and I'm looking for some fun and relatively easy project ideas. I've never really tinkered with old phones before, so I'm open to suggestions for beginners.

Ideally, I'd like to do something useful with them instead of just throwing them away.

My objective is to learn progressively so you can suggest something progressively harder for each and I'll research on how to do it.

Any ideas or resources for someone starting out with this kind of thing would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Odin not reading SM-G781B in download mode when trying to flash to A11 downgrade. Please help!

I am trying to downgrade my Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G (SM-781B) to A11 for better SOT.

Odin recognizes my phone when unlocked, but don't recognize when I boot in download mode.
I have tried using different cables and ports, but nothing seems to be working.

I am using Odin 3.14.4 and have installed Samsung USB driver.

Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Are there any YouTube clients still compatible with Jellybean?

Friend has an old Tab 3 Lite he wants to repurpose, however the variant he has (T110) only has modified stock roms, while people have attempted to get Cyanogen 11 and 12 working, almost nothing works in Cyanogen 11 and Cyanogen 12 doesn't boot, so for now it's stuck with TouchWiz 4.2.2. Are there any YouTube clients still compatible with it?

Tablet is rooted via KernelSU, and Xposed is installed.

OG iPad needs a battery, what can i do?

I got a 1st gen iPad from my auntie to see if i "can do something", battery was bloated and dead after 4 years in a closet.

Tried a couple of methods to "revive" it, after safely releasing all gas out in my yard, i attempted to follow a tutorial to charge battery again by connecting 5V to exposed pins but it didn't work.

Of course, people's favorite solution is "buy a new battery" but unfortunately in my country there's no batteries for OG ipad anymore. Buying from Aliexpress or any other source is as expensive as buying another ipad because of shipping costs (plus, local customs are kinda troublesome about batteries).

So, i was wondering if could be possible to do some battery mod like removing screwed battery and replacing it with lithium cells (i can get plenty of them, even use phone batteries), ipad is wide enough to fit many cells to match the required power.

Any guidance will be appreciated, even if it's not a good idea please let me know. Thank you

Best way to repurpose old Android & Windows tablets as Google Photos photo frames?

I have a couple of old Android tablets and a Windows 10 tablet I would like to repurpose as photo frames that displays images from Google Photos.

  1. I created some new albums in Google Photos, one for each photo frame.
  2. For the Android tablets, I simply installed Google Photos and set the Android screensaver to Google Photos with a 15 second timeout period and chose the corresponding album.

2A) This seems to work, but on my first test I noticed that the devices screen had turned black / off after some period of time even though they were charging/docked and the expected behavior should be for the screensaver to keep running. Testing again, but if the issue is reproduced is there a recommended solution? One tablet is Android 9 and one is Android 11.
3) For the Windows 10 tablet, I haven't found a solution yet. I see there used to be a Google Photos Screensaver app bundled with Picasa but considering the deprecated status of those applications does this still work and have the function to stream the photos from a Google Photos album? If not what is the simplest method to have a Windows 10 tablet automatically slideshow a Google Photos album after boot?

I want yt on my little star, is that too much world?!! )-:

i have an old gt-s5282 with android 4.4 custom rom (cm 11),when i tried installing skytube it works well but when i try to open any video it says (failed to query underlying media codecs),but actually before upgrading it ran stock android 4.1 which is supported by skytube legacy and it worked so could it be the rom, is there a way to fix that, would reinstalling the rom do anything, also bravenewpipe says ui error but videos work well with an external media player(downloaded ones on the phone like mp4).(please don't suggest using browser cause that'd too slow unless you have a good recommendation + provide apk except for firefox 68.11)

EDIT (HOW TO WATCH YOUTUBE ON SAMSUNG GALAXY STAR GT-S5282 IN 2025 FAST AND EASY lol) :i found it, i installed BNPL (BraveNewpipeLegacy) (here: GitHub - bravenewpipe/NewPipe: A libre lightweight streaming front-end for Android.),and VLC Media Player(also here: VLC for Android 3.1.2 (arm-v7a) (nodpi) (Android 4.2+) APK Download by Videolabs - APKMirror).

so basically, in BNPL's settings go to video and audio then enable use external video player and open videos with VLC.

Could I repurpose a Galaxy Note 10 as a Raspberry Pi-like device?

Hello everyone,

I have a Galaxy Note 10 with a defective screen. Nothing special about itā€”I treated this phone like garbage, and it worked fine for 5 years until it developed a flickering green screen and faulty touch. Iā€™ve already bought another phone, but to me, it feels like a waste not to give a new purpose to what is still really good hardware.

The problem itself seems to be water damage; all the water damage indicators on this phone show moisture marks. I havenā€™t fully torn down the phone yet, but Iā€™ve already removed the back cover and cleaned the connectors with isopropyl alcohol. After that, the phone turned on without the green tint, but the touch screen didnā€™t workā€”only the S Pen did. A few minutes later, the green tint returned along with the erratic touch screen, causing bugs.

Iā€™ll give it another try by tearing down the phone completely and cleaning each part, hoping to solve the screen issue, but it seems unlikely. It would be amazing if the screen connectors on the logic board were standard connectors, allowing me to buy an HDMI adapter or install a different screen and build a new 3D-printed case to turn the hardware into a retro console.

Another option Iā€™ve considered is buying a cheap TFT screen without a touch sensor from AliExpress, which costs about $30. Iā€™ve never seen one of these in person, but everyone Iā€™ve asked says the screen is total garbage.

Besides these alternatives, I was thinking that if I could remove all unnecessary components (like the SIM tray, cameras, screen, speakers, etc.), keeping only the logic board and battery, and adapt output ports like HDMI and USB, I could repurpose it as a Raspberry Pi-like device. All the essential hardware, including the battery, could fit into a very small box, like a Tic Tac case.

Have any of you tried something like this?

Old Android Tablet unable to connect to Google

I currently have a Lenovo Tab 2 A7-30HC running on Android 5.0.1, software version A7-30HC_20150630. I am able to sign in through chrome BUT i am unable to sign in to google play store where it gives me this error "Unable to reach google servers". My wifi is working fine.

Is there a workaround all this to download apps on my tablet without google services? Or a workaround on google services itself?

How to Experiment with Android 4.0 OS?

I have some old Android devices ranging from Android 4.0.4 to Android 8.0.0. The one I mostly want to experiment with is a Mele A100 TV box with useful hardware I/O and seems to be rooted. I read that as of Sept 2024 the oldest version of Android supported by Google Play services is Android 6.0 so I can't connect or download apps for the oldest ones. I'm familiar with Linux commands and I've connected with adb to some of them and "looked around" but don't know yet what I can change. I'd like to make and install simple apps. Will the current version Android Studio let me program apps for as old as Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0) or should I download an earlier version?

Edit: I only intend to make simple apps for myself to make the device(s) work.

Samsung cell unlocked

Hello I am an Apple iPhone user but my husband is not into Apple or anything new, even his PC is rigging windows 8. I want to get him to use a smart phone. He has old Nokia. Iā€™m told Android cell phone is easier to learn. Can you tell me please if I bought him an unlocked phone in the US would it work in the UK where we live? (Iā€™m visiting elderly Dad in Florida for Thanksgiving.) Husband has a physical sim. What else should I know about what kind of phone is good entry level that I can figure out and get him started into the smart phone era! Your help very much appreciated.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 stock firmware reflash failure

When I first got my Ace 2, I neglected to take a backup and just went straight into re-partitioning and re-flashing, now that I'm trying to re-flash the stock firmware, I realised how I shot myself in the foot by not taking a backup.

I've attempted to flash android 4.1.2 jelly bean repeatedly with no luck. I do belive this is to do with the repartitioning I've performed (specifically using these zips on XDAForums) but any attempts to flash a PIT result in an "custom pit binary" error.

A few pages in to the thread mentioned above, is a ZIP that will supposedly re-flash the stock partition layout, but I also cannot get that to work as, after flashing, the phone will boot to recovery after being unable to mount `/system` and `/cache`

I've tried everything I can think of at this point, so my only real option is to turn to reddit, any help would be appreciated.

What can I do with a VZW Ellipsis 8 in 2024?

I have a Verizon Ellipsis 8 (had it since 2016, stopped using it in 2019) Just gonna say it: It's ridiculously slow. Everything on this is painful, the lock screen lags so badly and it overheats on the home screen. It also can't be upgraded past Android 5.1.1. (Yes I've checked for custom roms, there are none) It can't open the play store without it crashing immediately.

What can I do with it? I don't want to just let it rot but it feels like ewaste. I tried using it as an art tablet but even drawing is very slow.
